Questions & Answers about Bit ću najbolji stručnjak.

Why is it bit ću instead of biti ću?

When a verb's infinitive ends in -ti and comes immediately before the future tense helper verb (ću, ćeš, etc.), the final -i is dropped in writing and speaking. So biti (to be) becomes bit.

How is the word najbolji (the best) formed?

It comes from the irregular adjective dobar (good). Its comparative form (better) is bolji. To make the superlative (the best) of any Croatian adjective, you simply add the prefix naj- to the comparative form, giving us najbolji.

Why don't we use budem for 'I will be' in this sentence?

For a simple, standalone future statement like 'I will be', you use the standard future tense bit ću. The form budem is used to express the future mainly in dependent clauses, such as after dok (until) or ako (if), which you are learning in this lesson.

What gender is stručnjak, and how would I say 'the best female expert'?

Stručnjak is a masculine noun, which is why the adjective najbolji is in its masculine form. To talk about a female expert, you would use the feminine noun stručnjakinja and change the adjective to match: najbolja stručnjakinja.
