The Future Tense of "Biti" (To Be)
To describe future states, identities, or career goals, use the future tense of the verb biti (to be).
| Pronoun | Affirmative | Negative | Question |
|---|
| ja | bit ću | neću biti | hoću li biti |
| ti | bit ćeš | nećeš biti | hoćeš li biti |
| on / ona | bit će | neće biti | hoće li biti |
| mi | bit ćemo | nećemo biti | hoćemo li biti |
| vi | bit ćete | nećete biti | hoćete li biti |
| oni / one | bit će | neće biti | hoće li biti |
In affirmative statements, drop the final -i of the infinitive when it comes before the helping verb (bit ću, bit ćeš). If a subject pronoun comes first, keep the full infinitive (ja ću biti).
To make negative statements, use the negative future helping verbs (neću, nećeš, etc.) followed by the full infinitive biti. For questions, use hoću li, hoćeš li, etc., also followed by the full infinitive.
Temporal Clauses with "Dok ne" (Until)
To express that a situation will continue until a certain event occurs, Croatian uses the conjunction dok ne followed by the verb (typically in the present tense).
Important: The ne in this structure does not make the meaning negative. It is simply a required structural piece for expressing "until."
You can easily combine a negative future state with a dok ne clause to say you won't do or be something until a condition is met.
