Questions & Answers about Došli smo na aerodrom na vrijeme.
Why do we use došli here instead of a word like išli?
Došli is the past tense form of doći, a perfective verb meaning 'to arrive' or 'to come'. Since this sentence is about the completed action of reaching a destination, we use došli. If we used išli (went or were going), it would focus on the process of the journey itself rather than the successful arrival.
Why does the sentence use na aerodrom instead of u aerodrom?
For certain public spaces and transit hubs like airports, train stations, and open squares, Croatian traditionally uses the preposition na instead of u. Because we are expressing motion towards a destination, aerodrom is in the accusative case. Since it is an inanimate masculine noun, its accusative form looks exactly like its dictionary form.
How exactly does na vrijeme mean 'on time'?
Na vrijeme is a fixed phrase in Croatian. It uses the preposition na plus the accusative form of the noun vrijeme (which can mean 'time' or 'weather') to express that an action happened right on schedule, very similar to how we say 'on time' in English.
Why does smo come right after došli?
