Questions & Answers about Danas više nema struje.
Why is the word for electricity struje instead of struja?
Because it follows nema (there is no). The word nema requires the noun that comes after it to be in the genitive case. The dictionary form is the feminine noun struja, and to make it genitive, the -a ending changes to -e, resulting in struje.
How does više mean "anymore" in this sentence?
The word više literally means "more". However, when you pair it with a negative word like nema, the phrase više nema (literally: "more there is no") translates naturally to "no more" or "not anymore".
If we were talking about multiple missing things, would nema change its form?
No. When expressing "there is no" or "there are no", nema acts as a fixed, impersonal word. It never changes form, regardless of whether the missing thing is singular or plural. Only the noun changes into the genitive case.
Could the word order be different, like Danas nema više struje?
Yes! Croatian word order is quite flexible. Danas nema više struje is perfectly fine and means exactly the same thing. Putting više right before the negative verb is just a very common pattern native speakers use for emphasis.
