Negative existence (nema)

Negative Existence (nema)

To say that something is missing, unavailable, or doesn't exist, use the word nema (there is no / there isn't).

Whenever you use nema to state that something is absent, the missing item must be in the genitive case.

For masculine nouns (which typically end in a consonant), form the genitive by adding -a. For example, internet becomes interneta, and signal becomes signala.

There is no internet here.
Ovdje nema interneta.
The cellphone is new, but there is no signal.
Mobitel je nov, ali nema signala.

Feminine Nouns

For feminine nouns, which usually end in -a, change the ending to -e in the genitive case. For example, struja (electricity) becomes struje.

There is no electricity in the restaurant.
U restoranu nema struje.

Neuter Nouns

Neuter nouns generally end in -o (like gorivo, fuel) or -e (like grijanje, heating). Change the final vowel to -a in the genitive case.

  • gorivo becomes goriva
  • grijanje becomes grijanja
Why is there no heating in the office?
Zašto u uredu nema grijanja?
There is no fuel in the car.
U automobilu nema goriva.

Saying "No More" (više)

To express that a resource has run out, combine nema with the adverb više (anymore). You will often see this grouped as nema više or više nema. The noun that follows remains in the genitive case.

There is no more oil for the salad.
Nema više ulja za salatu.
There is no more hope.
Nema više nade.
