The Prefixes "Do-" and "Od-"
In Croatian, the verbal prefixes do- and od- are a natural pairing. The prefix do- generally indicates reaching a spatial, temporal, or figurative limit. The prefix od- indicates separation, departure, or moving away from a starting point.
Arriving and Departing
When added to verbs of travel, do- expresses arriving at a destination, while od- expresses departing. Note that when od- attaches to a verb starting with a voiceless consonant like p, it undergoes a sound change and becomes ot- (as in otputovati).
The prefix od- can also apply to abstract departures, such as odustati (to give up, or separate oneself from a plan or task).
Moving Up To and Away From
For physical motion like swimming or running, do- signifies moving up to a specific boundary. These verbs are frequently paired with the preposition do (up to / until). Conversely, od- and ot- describe moving away from a point.
Physical Separation and Removal
The prefix od- is highly productive for actions involving physical separation or removal. You will see it in verbs for cutting a piece off (odrezati), taking something away (odnijeti), pushing someone or something away (odgurnuti), or dragging something off (odvući).
Reaching the Limit of Patience
The idea of reaching a boundary with do- is not just physical. The verb dosaditi (to become boring) uses do- to express that a situation or activity has reached the limit of your tolerance or interest.
