Proportional Comparatives
To say "the [more]..., the [better]...", Croatian uses the correlative words što and to.
The formula is što + [comparative], to + [comparative]. Notice how the comparative word generally sits right next to its corresponding što or to.
| The moister the soil, the faster the plant grows. | Što je tlo vlažnije, to biljka brže raste. |
| The drier the soil, the smaller the yield. | Što je tlo suše, to je urod manji. |
| The better the seed, the bigger the plant. | Što je sjeme bolje, to je biljka veća. |
To say "the more" of a specific thing, use više (more). The noun being measured takes the genitive case (kiše):
| The more rain there is, the more abundant the yield is. | Što ima više kiše, to je urod obilniji. |
This pattern works exactly the same way with adverbs:
| The earlier we sow, the faster the vegetables grow. | Što ranije sijemo, to povrće brže raste. |
| The more abundant the harvest, the happier the farmers are. | Što je žetva obilnija, to su poljoprivrednici sretniji. |
