Polite Requests
In Croatian, the present tense verbs želim or hoću (I want) can sound too direct in formal settings. To sound polite, use the conditional mood to say "I would like".
Using htjeti (To want)
Soften requests using the conditional form of the verb htjeti. The l-participle matches the speaker's gender:
- Male speaker: htio bih (I would like)
- Female speaker: htjela bih (I would like)
- Group: htjeli bismo (We would like)
Follow these phrases with a noun or an infinitive verb.
| I would like to pay the bill, please. | Htio bih platiti račun, molim. |
| I would like a pleasant suite in the hotel. | Htjela bih ugodan apartman u hotelu. |
| We would like to see the menu. | Htjeli bismo vidjeti jelovnik. |
For third-person requests, use the helper bi and match the participle to the subject's gender.
| The gentleman would like the price list, please. | Gospodin bi htio cjenik, molim. |
Using voljeti (To like / to love)
You can also express polite desires using the conditional of voljeti, matching the participle to the subject: volio bih (male), voljela bih (female), or voljeli bismo (plural).
| I would like to reserve a table in the restaurant. | Volio bih rezervirati stol u restoranu. |
| We would like to try the champagne. | Voljeli bismo probati šampanjac. |
The participle changes to the neuter form voljelo for neuter nouns like osoblje (staff).
| The staff would like to recommend an excellent wine. | Osoblje bi voljelo preporučiti izvrsno vino. |
Offering and Asking Politely
When offering something or asking a polite question, use the conditional question format: the helper verb, the question particle li, and the participle (e.g., Biste li...).
| Would you like the price list or the menu? | Biste li htjeli cjenik ili jelovnik? |
| Would you like to reserve a suite? | Biste li htjeli rezervirati apartman? |
