To say that someone or something has "too much" of a certain quality, attach the prefix pre- directly to the adjective (for example, divlji becomes predivlji).
To complete the thought and express what this excess makes impossible (e.g., "too wild to sleep inside"), use the conjunction da bi followed by the verb in its l-participle form.
| The wolf is too wild to sleep in the house, he must stay in the cage. | Vuk je predivlji da bi spavao u kući, mora ostati u kavezu. |
Notice how the adjective predivlji and the l-participle spavao both take masculine forms to agree with vuk (wolf). Both the adjective and the l-participle must always agree in gender and number with the subject they refer to.
| The bird is too neglected to leave the cage. | Ptica je prezapuštena da bi napustila kavez. |
Here, both the adjective (prezapuštena) and the l-participle (napustila) take feminine endings to agree with ptica (bird).
When Someone Else Performs the Action
Often, the person or thing with the excessive quality isn't the one doing the action—for example, an animal being too aggressive for an adopter to tame.
The structure remains exactly the same (pre- + adjective + da bi). However, while the adjective still describes the first subject, the l-participle must now agree with the new subject performing the action.
| The animal is too aggressive for the adopter to tame her. | Životinja je preagresivna da bi ju udomitelj pripitomio. |
| Some dogs are too helpless for someone to adopt them. | Neki psi su prenemoćni da bi ih netko udomio. |
In both examples, the adjectives (preagresivna, prenemoćni) describe the animals, but the l-participles (pripitomio, udomio) take their form from the people acting upon them (udomitelj, netko).
