Factual comparisons (kao što)

Factual Comparisons with Kao što

When you want to say "as" or "like" to refer to an established fact, a prior statement, or an external source, Croatian uses the conjunction kao što. It literally translates to "like what" but functions perfectly as "as" in English comparisons.

as / like
kao što

Referring to Shared Knowledge

Kao što is incredibly common in introductory clauses that refer back to something both speakers already know or have just discussed. You will frequently hear it in set phrases like kao što vidite (as you see) or kao što sam rekao (as I said).

As you see, the horoscope is not always exact.
Kao što vidite, horoskop nije uvijek točan.
As I said, astrology does not help with anything in this prediction.
Kao što sam rekao, astrologija ni u čemu ne pomaže u ovom predviđanju.

Notice that a comma separates the kao što clause from the main clause when it begins the sentence.

Flexible Positioning

Just like in English, the kao što clause does not have to start the sentence. It can smoothly follow the main clause to tack on a reference to shared knowledge.

Astrology interprets the stars, as you already know.
Astrologija tumači zvijezde, kao što već znate.

Citing External Sources and Plans

This conjunction is also perfect for citing written information, evidence, or rules. When navigating astrology (astrologija) and horoscopes (horoskop), kao što allows you to draw direct comparisons to what the charts indicate or what the aspects demand.

As it says in the natal chart, your ascendant is a Scorpio.
Kao što piše u natalnoj karti, tvoj podznak je škorpion.
Like the horoscope says, you have strong intuition.
Kao što horoskop kaže, ti imaš jaku intuiciju.

Whether you are relying on intuition (intuicija) or strictly following a layout, kao što helps you anchor your next action to an agreed-upon fact or plan.

As we planned, we will continue to interpret the aspects for the Scorpio.
Kao što smo planirali, nastavit ćemo tumačiti aspekte za škorpiona.
