Questions & Answers about المطعم مغلق، فسوف نأكل جبنا وخبزا.
Why is the word for "and" (و) attached directly to the word for bread (خبزا)?
In Arabic, the basic conjunction و (wa), meaning "and", is a single letter that is always attached to the beginning of the word that follows it. It never stands alone with spaces around it like the English word "and" does. So, وخبزا is written as one block meaning "and bread".
What is the ف attached to the front of فسوف?
The letter ف (fa) is another very common conjunction. It means "so", "then", or "consequently". Just like و, it attaches directly to the following word. Here, it connects the two halves of the sentence: the restaurant is closed, so (ف) we will eat cheese and bread.
Why do the words for cheese (جبنا) and bread (خبزا) have an extra alif and two little lines at the end?
The two diagonal lines are a pronunciation mark called tanween fatha, which adds an "-an" sound to the end of the word (jubnan, khubzan). In Arabic, we add this ending (usually along with a helper alif) to indefinite nouns when they are the object of a verb—the thing receiving the action. Since "cheese" is what is being eaten, it gets this ending. Importantly, the و ("and") makes the word "bread" copy the grammatical ending of "cheese"!
How is the future tense "will eat" formed in this sentence?
