### The Formal Vocative (يا أيها / يا أيتها)

When addressing someone directly in Arabic, you use the vocative particle يا (O). However, there is a strict rule: if the noun you are addressing starts with the definite article (الـ), you cannot attach يا directly to it.

Instead, you must insert a formal intermediary between the particle and the noun:
- Use يا أيُّها for masculine nouns or mixed-gender groups.
- Use يا أيَّتُها for feminine nouns.

This structure is highly formal and is commonly used in speeches, announcements, and professional correspondence.

### Welcoming and Addressing Crowds

Because this vocative structure is so elevated, you will often hear it at official gatherings, such as an inauguration (افتتاح), a tribute (تكريم), or a closing ceremony (ختام). 

Notice how the noun following يا أيها or يا أيتها must always carry the definite article (الـ), even though we translate it simply as "O attendees" or "O ladies."

### Adding Adjectives in Formal Address

If you want to add an adjective to describe the group you are addressing (like "distinguished" or "noble"), standard adjective rules apply. The adjective must match the noun in gender, number, and definiteness. 

Since the addressed noun in this structure always has the definite article (الـ), any adjective describing it must also take the definite article.
