Thai คิด is an invariant verb with several established frames. It can present an active thinking process, introduce an opinion with ว่า, mean calculate in combinations such as คิดเลข, express intention in คิดจะ + event, or combine with ถึง to mean think of or miss someone. English uses think across some of this territory but not all of it, so learn the following element together with คิด.
The complement identifies the frame
| Frame | Core meaning | Natural substitution |
|---|---|---|
| คิด + เรื่อง/topic | think about, consider | คิดเรื่องย้ายบ้าน |
| คิดว่า + clause | think or hold the opinion that... | คิดว่าฝนจะตก |
| คิดเลข / คิดราคา | calculate numbers or a price | คิดเงินผิด |
| คิดจะ + event | intend or contemplate doing | คิดจะสมัครงาน |
| คิดถึง + person/place | think of or miss | คิดถึงครอบครัว |
| คิดไม่ออก | be unable to think of/retrieve | คิดชื่อไม่ออก |
ฉันกำลังคิดเรื่องเรียนต่อค่ะ
chan kamlang khit rueang rian to kha
I'm thinking about continuing my studies. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; active deliberation)
ผมคิดว่านั่งรถไฟสะดวกกว่าขับรถเองครับ
phom khit wa nang rotfai saduak kwa khap rot eng khrap
I think taking the train is more convenient than driving myself. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; opinion with ว่า)
อยู่ไกลบ้านนาน ๆ ก็คิดถึงครอบครัวค่ะ
yu klai ban nan nan ko khit thueng khropkhrua kha
When I'm away from home for a long time, I miss my family. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; conventional คิดถึง)
The complement is not optional theory. คิดว่า does not mean calculate; คิดเลข does not introduce an opinion; and คิดถึง is a conventional combination, not a freely compositional “think to.” The cognition overview contrasts คิด with รู้, รู้จัก, and เข้าใจ.
An invariant-form matrix
คิด keeps the same form with every subject. Active thinking is naturally compatible with progressive กำลัง, unlike stable knowledge predicates such as รู้.
| Environment | Thai pattern | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมคิดเรื่องงบประมาณ | เมื่อวาน locates the deliberation |
| ongoing process | ฉันกำลังคิดคำตอบ | กำลัง presents active mental work |
| completed calculation | เขาคิดราคาแล้ว | แล้ว presents the calculation as completed |
| later deliberation | พวกเราจะคิดแผนสำรองพรุ่งนี้ | จะ and พรุ่งนี้ locate a later process |
| negative intention | เขาไม่คิดจะเปลี่ยนงาน | ไม่ scopes over the intention frame |
เมื่อวานผมคิดเรื่องงบประมาณทั้งบ่ายครับ
muea wan phom khit rueang ngoppraman thang bai khrap
Yesterday I thought about the budget all afternoon. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; past from context)
ฉันกำลังคิดคำตอบให้ลูกค้าอยู่ค่ะ
chan kamlang khit kham top hai luk kha yu kha
I'm working out an answer for the customer. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; ongoing mental process)
เขาคิดราคาวัสดุทั้งหมดแล้วครับ
khao khit rakha watsadu thangmot laeo khrap
He has calculated the price of all the materials. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker; completed calculation)
พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะคิดแผนสำรองด้วยกันค่ะ
phrung ni phuak rao cha khit phaen samrong duai kan kha
Tomorrow we'll work out a backup plan together. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; later event)
No form of คิด means “thought” through inflection. เมื่อวาน provides past time, กำลัง...อยู่ frames an unfolding process, and แล้ว presents completion. These expressions are not one-marker–one-tense equivalents.
คิดว่า: an opinion or inference
คิดว่า + clause packages the following proposition as the thinker's view, estimate, or inference. The subject may disappear when the speaker is obvious: คิดว่าน่าจะทันค่ะ “I think we'll probably make it in time.” ว่า is not an English infinitive marker; it introduces propositional content.
ฉันคิดว่าห้องนี้เล็กเกินไปสำหรับสิบคนค่ะ
chan khit wa hong ni lek koen pai samrap sip khon kha
I think this room is too small for ten people. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker; evaluation)
จากสีท้องฟ้า ผมคิดว่าฝนน่าจะตกเร็ว ๆ นี้ครับ
chak si thongfa phom khit wa fon na cha tok reo reo ni khrap
Judging from the sky, I think it will probably rain soon. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; inference)
Because Thai has no obligatory English-style backshift, an earlier thinking event does not mechanically change the form inside the ว่า-clause. Time expressions and context locate both events.
Calculation and charging
In คิดเลข, คิด means calculate. คิดราคา calculates or sets a price; คิดเงิน may mean calculate the bill or charge money, depending on context; คิดค่า... means charge a specified fee.
| Collocation | Typical meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| คิดเลข | calculate / do arithmetic | neutral |
| คิดราคา | calculate or quote a price | neutral commercial |
| คิดเงิน | calculate the bill / charge | neutral commercial |
| คิดค่าบริการ | charge a service fee | neutral to formal commercial |
| คิดดอกเบี้ย | calculate/charge interest | financial |
พนักงานคิดเงินเกินมาหนึ่งรายการค่ะ
phanak ngan khit ngoen koen ma nueng raikan kha
The employee charged for one extra item. (ordinary polite service complaint, female speaker)
ร้านนี้ไม่คิดค่าจัดส่งในเขตเมืองครับ
ran ni mai khit kha chat song nai khet mueang khrap
This shop doesn't charge a delivery fee within the city. (ordinary polite service explanation, male speaker)
The object determines the conventional commercial reading. Do not assume that every English cost uses คิด; ของชิ้นนี้ราคาเท่าไร asks its price without a calculating agent.
Intention with คิดจะ and scope
คิดจะ + event presents intention, contemplation, or a plan. It can sound more deliberate than simple prospective จะ + event. With negation, placement matters.
พี่สาวฉันคิดจะเปิดร้านขนมเล็ก ๆ ค่ะ
phi sao chan khit cha poet ran khanom lek lek kha
My older sister is thinking of opening a small dessert shop. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; contemplated plan)
ผมไม่คิดจะขายบ้านหลังนี้ครับ
phom mai khit cha khai ban lang ni khrap
I have no intention of selling this house. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; intention negated)
Compare ไม่คิดว่าจะขาย “do not think [someone] will sell,” where ไม่ negates the opinion, with คิดว่าจะไม่ขาย “think [someone] will not sell,” where the negative belongs inside the proposition. The negative-scope page develops such contrasts.
คิดถึง and result-sensitive combinations
With a person or home place, คิดถึง commonly expresses missing them. In other contexts it can mean think of or have something come to mind. คิดออก means succeed in thinking of an answer or idea; คิดไม่ออก presents failed retrieval.
พอเห็นรูปเก่า ฉันก็คิดถึงคุณยายค่ะ
pho hen rup kao chan ko khit thueng khun yai kha
When I see the old photo, I miss Grandmother. (ordinary polite family speech, female speaker)
ผมคิดชื่อหัวข้อไม่ออกครับ
phom khit chue hua kho mai ok khrap
I can't think of a title. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; failed retrieval)
Plain ไม่คิด means not think or not intend; คิดไม่ออก means mental effort fails to produce a result. Moving ไม่ changes scope.
Omission and ordinary-polite dialogue
The topic can disappear when it is active: ขอคิดก่อนค่ะ means “Let me think first.” In a pricing exchange, คิดแล้วครับ can mean “I've calculated it,” because both speakers know what amount is being calculated.
ค่าซ่อมทั้งหมดประมาณเท่าไรคะ
kha som thangmot praman thao rai kha
About how much will the entire repair cost? (ordinary polite service question, female speaker)
ขอคิดราคาก่อนนะครับ ต้องรวมค่าอะไหล่ด้วย
kho khit rakha kon na khrap tong ruam kha alai duai
Let me calculate the price first; I need to include the parts as well. (ordinary polite service reply, male speaker)
คิดเสร็จแล้วช่วยโทรบอกได้ไหมคะ
khit set laeo chuai tho bok dai mai kha
When you've finished calculating, could you call and tell me? (ordinary polite request, female speaker; price omitted recoverably)
ได้ครับ ผมคิดว่าน่าจะทราบราคาช่วงบ่าย
dai khrap phom khit wa na cha sap rakha chuang bai
Certainly. I think I should know the price this afternoon. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Adding เกี่ยวกับ before a ว่า-clause
❌ ฉันคิดเกี่ยวกับว่าห้องนี้เล็กไปค่ะ
Incorrect—an opinion proposition follows the established frame คิดว่า directly.
✅ ฉันคิดว่าห้องนี้เล็กไปค่ะ
chan khit wa hong ni lek pai kha
I think this room is too small. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
2. Translating “miss” without ถึง
❌ ผมคิดครอบครัวตอนอยู่ต่างจังหวัดครับ
Incorrect for ‘miss my family’; the conventional predicate is คิดถึง.
✅ ผมคิดถึงครอบครัวตอนอยู่ต่างจังหวัดครับ
phom khit thueng khropkhrua ton yu tang changwat khrap
I miss my family when I'm away in another province. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
3. Inserting an infinitive marker after คิดจะ
❌ เขาคิดจะที่จะสมัครงานใหม่ค่ะ
Incorrect—คิดจะ is followed directly by the intended event predicate.
✅ เขาคิดจะสมัครงานใหม่ค่ะ
khao khit cha samak ngan mai kha
She's thinking of applying for a new job. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
4. Placing negation between คิด and จะ
❌ ผมคิดไม่จะย้ายสำนักงานครับ
Incorrect for negated intention; ไม่ precedes the whole คิดจะ frame.
✅ ผมไม่คิดจะย้ายสำนักงานครับ
phom mai khit cha yai samnakngan khrap
I don't intend to move the office. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
5. Treating แล้ว as a past suffix inside the frame
❌ เมื่อวานพนักงานคิดแล้วราคาให้ฉันค่ะ
Incorrect—แล้ว does not split คิด from its calculation object.
✅ เมื่อวานพนักงานคิดราคาให้ฉันแล้วค่ะ
muea wan phanak ngan khit rakha hai chan laeo kha
Yesterday the employee calculated the price for me. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- คิดเรื่อง... presents deliberation, คิดว่า... an opinion, คิดเลข/ราคา calculation, คิดจะ... intention, and คิดถึง... thought or missing.
- คิด stays unchanged across person and time; surrounding expressions provide viewpoint.
- Active thinking naturally combines with กำลัง, unlike stable knowledge.
- ไม่คิด and คิดไม่ออก differ because negation scopes over different parts of the predicate chain.
- Topics and calculation objects may be omitted only when recoverable.
