This original dialogue takes place on a Bangkok street. A female visitor asks a male local how to walk to a fictional city museum. The route unfolds one landmark at a time, so later turns omit the traveler, route, and destination whenever they remain obvious.
The connected exchange shows more than a list of direction words. ไป, ผ่าน, ข้าม, เข้า follow the imagined path; จนถึง, พอ...แล้ว, ถ้า...แสดงว่า connect stages; and measures and ordinal phrases identify exactly how far and which turn. Final particles and confirmation questions let the visitor check the route without sounding demanding.

Natural full translation
Visitor: Excuse me. Can I walk to the city museum from here?
Local: Yes. Go straight for about two hundred meters, as far as the first traffic light.
Visitor: I turn left when I reach the light, right?
Local: Right. After you turn, pass one bus stop.
Visitor: Where should I cross the road?
Local: Use the pedestrian crossing, then take the second alley on your right.
Visitor: Is the museum far down the alley?
Local: No. It’s on the right, opposite the blue school.
Visitor: If I see the corner café, that means I’m on the right track, correct?
Local: Exactly. The café is right next to the museum.
Visitor: Thanks so much. I was worried I’d pass it.
Local: No problem. Take care crossing the road.
English repeatedly supplies I, you, and it. Thai names the destination where ambiguity could arise, then omits it again once อยู่ฝั่งขวา and เดินเลยไป clearly concern the museum.

The final table row intentionally glosses the function of ระวัง as “take care”; the RTGS remains rawang. As elsewhere, the Thai dots mark analytic chunks only, not normal written word spacing.
Grammar across the route
The deictic center launches ไป
The exchange begins จากตรงนี้...ไปพิพิธภัณฑ์, so the current street location is the departure point and the museum lies away from it. The local then keeps ไป in เดินตรงไป. Inside the alley, เข้าไป adds an inward path plus onward direction. Later มาถูกทาง reviews the visitor’s imagined progress up to the landmark: มา looks back along the path toward the attained reference point rather than reversing the instructions.
This contextual viewpoint is why English go and come cannot be substituted mechanically. The full contrast is explained under motion with ไป and มา.
Serial order draws the path
เดินตรงไป, เดินผ่าน, ข้าม...แล้วเข้า, and เดินเลยไป put actions in their conceptual or chronological order. Thai does not add “to” before each second verb. The listener can mentally animate the route: walk straight → reach light → turn → pass stop → cross → enter alley.
Linkers locate one instruction relative to another
จนถึงไฟแดงแรก sets the endpoint for walking straight. พอถึงไฟแดงแล้ว treats arrival as the trigger for turning. เลี้ยวแล้วเดินผ่าน... uses แล้ว to advance to the next action. Finally ถ้าเห็น...แสดงว่า... makes a visible landmark evidence for an inference. These linkers prevent a list of imperatives from becoming ambiguous.
Measures, counts, and ordinals identify different things
ประมาณสองร้อยเมตร measures distance. ป้ายรถเมล์หนึ่งป้าย counts one bus-stop landmark using repeated classifier ป้าย. ซอยที่สอง selects the second alley in a sequence with ordinal ที่สอง. It is different from ซอย 2, which ordinarily names “Soi 2.” English “second” and “two” distinguish these too, but Thai makes the contrast through ที่ and context rather than numeral inflection.
Questions preserve local word order
ตรงไหน stays where the missing crossing location belongs: ต้องข้ามถนนตรงไหน. ได้ไหม asks whether walking is feasible, while ใช่ไหม checks a proposition the visitor has reconstructed. The visitor does not invert a subject and auxiliary as English does.
How grammar creates cooperation
The visitor opens with ขอโทษนะคะ, not a bare demand. She repeats an instruction in turn 3, asks about the one unresolved decision in turn 5, and confirms the final landmark in turn 9. The local answers ได้ครับ, ใช่ครับ, then breaks the path into manageable pieces. Repeated particles maintain respectful stranger talk, while นะครับ softens the closing safety advice.
A road sign would package the same route differently: short noun phrases, arrows, or formal imperatives such as โปรดใช้ทางม้าลาย “Please use the pedestrian crossing.” That written public register should not be read as casual conversation, and this spoken dialogue should not be copied word for word onto formal signage.
Common Mistakes
1. Moving a question word to the front
❌ ที่ไหนพิพิธภัณฑ์เมืองอยู่ครับ
Incorrect English-driven question order—ตรงไหน or ที่ไหน stays in the location slot.
✅ พิพิธภัณฑ์ชุมชนอยู่ตรงไหนครับ
phiphitthaphan chumchon yu trong nai khrap
Where is the community museum? (ordinary polite question, male visitor)
2. Inserting ที่ before a bare direction
❌ ถึงสี่แยกแล้วเลี้ยวที่ขวาค่ะ
Incorrect neutral path expression—เลี้ยว combines directly with ขวา or ซ้าย.
✅ ถึงวงเวียนแล้วเลี้ยวขวาค่ะ
thueng wongwian laeo liao khwa kha
When you reach the roundabout, turn right. (ordinary polite direction, female speaker)
3. Reversing the route’s deictic direction
❌ จากจุดนี้เดินมาตามถนนจนถึงตลาดครับ
Wrong for instructions sending the listener away from the speaker's current point; มา points toward the active center.
✅ จากศาลานี้เดินไปตามถนนจนถึงตลาดครับ
chak sala ni doen pai tam thanon chon thueng talat khrap
From this pavilion, walk along the road until the market. (male speaker; route proceeds away from here)
4. Confusing the second alley with named Soi 2
❌ เข้าซอย 2 ทางซ้ายมือค่ะ
This normally identifies an alley named Soi 2, not the second alley encountered on the left.
✅ ผ่านร้านหนังสือแล้วเข้าซอยที่สองทางซ้ายมือค่ะ
phan ran nangsue laeo khao soi thi song thang sai mue kha
After the bookshop, enter the second alley on the left. (female speaker; ordinal route instruction)
Key Takeaways
- Anchor ไป/มา to the active viewpoint, then order path verbs as the traveler experiences them.
- Use จนถึง, พอ...แล้ว, and ถ้า...แสดงว่า to connect route stages.
- Distinguish distance measures, counted landmarks, and ordinal turns.
- Omit repeated participants and destinations only while the route keeps them recoverable.
