The verb preferir means "to prefer". Like sentir, it is an -ir verb with an e→ie stem change in the present and a second e→i change in the third-person preterite, the gerund, and parts of the subjunctive. This double-change pattern is characteristic of e→ie -ir verbs.

Preferir is most often followed directly by an infinitive or a noun: prefiero café ("I prefer coffee"), prefiero viajar en tren ("I prefer to travel by train").

Preferir + infinitive — to prefer to do: Prefiero caminar.
Preferir A a B — to prefer A over B: Prefiero el verano al invierno.

When comparing preferences, use preferir A a B: Prefiero el mar a la montaña = "I prefer the sea to the mountain". The second preposition is always a, never que or sobre.
