Serbian смејати се means laugh as an activity, state, or repeated response. Perfective насмејати се packages one bounded reaction: laugh, have a laugh, or smile in response. Both retain lexical се. When a target is expressed, смејати се commonly governs the dative: смејати се некоме/нечему “laugh at someone/something.”
Principal forms
The present is смејем, not смејам. The third-person plural смеју and imperative смеј се should be learned with the infinitive. Standard Ijekavian Serbian has смијати се / насмијати се and смијао/смијала се; this page uses Ekavian consistently.
Деца се смеју у суседној соби и покушавају да не пробуде бебу.
The children are laughing in the next room and trying not to wake the baby.
Насмејао сам се кад сам видео шта је пас донео са терасе.
I laughed when I saw what the dog had brought from the terrace. (male speaker)
Open activity versus one response
Use смејати се when laughter is unfolding, lasts for a while, recurs, or serves as background. Use насмејати се when one stimulus produces a bounded response.
Публика се смејала током целе представе, чак и на местима која нису била смешна.
The audience laughed throughout the whole performance, even at parts that weren't funny.
Чим је чуо последњу реченицу, кратко се насмејао и спустио телефон.
As soon as he heard the final sentence, he gave a short laugh and put down the phone.
Насмејати се does not always imply loud laughter. Depending on context it may be translated “smile,” especially for a brief visible reaction.
Кад је препознала стари рукопис, насмејала се и нежно прешла прстом преко корица.
When she recognized the old manuscript, she smiled and gently ran her finger over the cover.
For an unambiguous smile, Serbian also has осмехнути се (one smile) and осмехивати се (ongoing/repeated smiling). The choice depends on whether laughter or merely a smile is intended.
Laughing at a target: bare dative
The person, remark, mistake, or joke targeted by the laughter commonly appears in dative.
Немојте се смејати новом колеги кад погреши неку реч.
Don't laugh at the new colleague when he gets a word wrong. (plural or polite)
Смејали смо се његовој причи јер је савршено имитирао нашег тренера.
We laughed at his story because he imitated our coach perfectly.
The dative does not automatically mean ridicule; context decides. Смејати се некоме often suggests laughing at the person and can sound unkind. To present shared laughter, use смејати се са + instrumental.
Не смејем се теби; смејем се с тобом јер ми је иста ствар смешна.
I'm not laughing at you; I'm laughing with you because I find the same thing funny.
This contrast is structural: dative теби marks the target, while с тобом marks company.
The dative-government guide places смејати се beside other verbs whose English translations conceal dative.
Dative clitics and се
Weak dative pronouns precede се: смејем му се, смејала јој се, смејемо им се. They do not replace lexical се.
Нисам разумела зашто ми се сви смеју док ми другарица није показала мрљу на кошуљи.
I didn't understand why everyone was laughing at me until my friend showed me the stain on my shirt. (female speaker)
Дечак му се насмејао, али није рекао ништа.
The boy smiled/laughed at him but said nothing.
The second example is context-dependent: насмејати се некоме may be a friendly smile or a brief laugh at that person. Add context when the social meaning matters.
The crucial perfect-tense pattern: no је beside се
Affirmative third-person singular perfect omits auxiliary је next to се:
| Person | Correct perfect |
|---|---|
| ја | смејао сам се / смејала сам се |
| она | она се смејала |
| ми | смејали смо се / смејале смо се |
| они/оне | они су се смејали / оне су се смејале |
Ана се насмејала кад је прочитала последњу поруку.
Ana laughed/smiled when she read the final message.
Not Ана се је насмејала. Negative није remains: Ана се није насмејала. This deletion is a clitic-cluster rule, not a special tense of смејати се.
Reflexive versus transitive насмејати
Without се, transitive насмејати некога means make someone laugh. The causer is the subject and the person affected is accusative.
Његова озбиљна имитација нас је насмејала више од саме шале.
His deadpan imitation made us laugh more than the joke itself.
Compare Ми смо се насмејали “we laughed” with Шала нас је насмејала “the joke made us laugh.” In the transitive sentence, је remains because there is no reflexive се; нас је is accusative clitic plus auxiliary.
Negation and commands
Negation precedes the finite verb: не смејем се, није се смејао. Imperfective imperative controls the activity; perfective насмеј се invites one visible response.
Не смеј се док пијеш воду — загрцнућеш се.
Don't laugh while you're drinking water—you'll choke. (informal)
Насмеј се за фотографију, па ћемо снимити још једну.
Smile for the photograph, and then we'll take one more. (informal)
The second is an everyday use in which English chooses smile. Imperfective смеј се would sound like an instruction to keep laughing.
Idiom and intensity
Смејати се од срца means laugh heartily or sincerely. Умирати од смеха is the common exaggeration “die laughing” and is (informal).
После толико напетих дана, коначно смо се смејали од срца.
After so many tense days, we finally laughed wholeheartedly.
Послала ми је снимак и написала: „Умирем од смеха!“
She sent me the clip and wrote, ‘I'm dying laughing!’ (informal)
Micro-dialogue
„Зашто се сви смеју?“ — „Петар је испричао шта му се јутрос догодило у лифту.“ — „Да ли се смеју њему?“ — „Не, смеју се с њим; и он се највише смеје.“
‘Why is everyone laughing?’ — ‘Petar told them what happened to him in the lift this morning.’ — ‘Are they laughing at him?’ — ‘No, they're laughing with him; he's laughing the most.’
The dialogue makes the dative target versus са + instrumental companionship contrast explicit.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: At or with?
Translate They laughed at him and They laughed with him. Use a dative clitic in the first and са + instrumental in the second, preserving lexical се both times.
Task 2: Activity, reaction, or cause?
Describe laughter continuing through a film, one brief laugh at the ending, and a scene that made you laugh. Use смејати се, насмејати се, and transitive насмејати некога.
