sećati se / setiti se (to remember)

Serbian divides English remember between imperfective сећати се and perfective сетити се. Сећати се describes a memory that is present, sustained, or repeatedly revisited; сетити се presents the retrieval boundary—the moment something comes to mind. Both verbs require lexical се and govern a noun complement in the genitive.

Principal forms

The imperfective has the present stem сећа-, while the perfective has сети-. Do not try to create сетам се or сећим се by blending the two paradigms.

Standard Ijekavian Serbian has сјећати се / сјетити се and сјетио/сјетила се. The examples below keep the Ekavian set consistent.

Сећам се мириса хлеба који је бака пекла недељом.

I remember the smell of the bread Grandma used to bake on Sundays.

Сетила сам се шифре тек кад сам већ позвала техничку подршку.

I remembered the password only after I had already called technical support. (female speaker)

A present memory versus successful retrieval

Use сећати се when the memory exists as a state or when someone revisits it over time. Use сетити се when the question is whether the memory was successfully retrieved at a relevant moment.

Добро се сећамо првог дана у новој школи.

We remember our first day at the new school well.

Нисам могао да се сетим њеног презимена док ми ниси показао фотографију.

I couldn't remember her surname until you showed me the photograph. (male speaker)

The perfective infinitive is natural after a modal because the desired result is one successful retrieval. Не могу да се сетим does not refer to future time; it means the retrieval boundary has not been reached.

The contrast can occur inside one situation:

Сећала сам се лица, али сам се имена сетила тек касније.

I remembered the face, but the name only came back to me later. (female speaker)

The face remained available in memory; the name crossed into awareness later. The aspect overview explains why both clauses can be past while presenting different viewpoints.

💡
Ask whether the memory is being held (сећати се) or recovered at a boundary (сетити се). English remember leaves that distinction implicit.

Both verbs govern genitive

With a noun phrase, every agreeing word takes genitive.

Base phraseMemory frame
наш први стансећати се нашег првог стана
стара адресасетити се старе адресе
ти разговорисећати се тих разговора
онсећати га се / сетити га се

Сећате ли се оног малог ресторана поред реке?

Do you remember that little restaurant by the river? (plural or polite)

Коначно сам се сетио тачног датума састанка.

I finally remembered the exact date of the meeting. (male speaker)

Do not add на or use an accusative direct object. Standard Serbian has сетити се пријатеља, not сетити се на пријатеља. The government remains the same across the aspect pair.

Pronouns: сећам га се, not сећам се га

Weak genitive pronouns precede се: сећам га се, сећам је се, сећам их се. Full forms carry contrast: Сећам се њега, али не и његовог брата.

Сећам га се са једне конференције, али никада нисмо разговарали.

I remember him from a conference, but we never spoke.

Дуго их се није сећала, а онда је пронашла старо писмо.

For a long time she didn't remember them, and then she found an old letter.

In the second example, plural genitive clitic их comes before се. Negated past није remains because negative auxiliary forms are not deleted.

Remembering facts, scenes, and obligations

A clause can supply the remembered content. No noun-case ending appears on the clause.

Сећам се да смо тог дана дуго чекали воз.

I remember that we waited a long time for the train that day.

Сетила се где је оставила резервни кључ.

She remembered where she had left the spare key.

Како, где, када, and шта introduce remembered scenes or information. Да + finite clause introduces a fact or proposition.

Perfective imperative сети се да... can remind someone of a future obligation, although everyday Serbian also frequently uses не заборави да....

Сети се да пошаљеш рачун пре краја радног дана.

Remember to send the invoice before the end of the workday.

The subject of пошаљеш is the same addressee, but Serbian still uses a finite да-clause rather than an English to-infinitive.

Imperatives have different viewpoints

Perfective сети се asks for one act of retrieval or functions as a reminder. Imperfective сећај се means keep remembering or preserve a memory and is more natural in reflective or commemorative language.

Кад будеш попуњавао образац, сети се броја старог уговора.

When you fill out the form, remember the old contract number.

Сећај се људи који су ти помогли кад је било најтеже.

Remember the people who helped you when things were hardest. (reflective)

The second is somewhat (elevated/reflective). In routine reminders, сети се or не заборави is more idiomatic.

Сећати се versus памтити

Памтити is transitive and takes accusative. It emphasizes retaining or having information stored; сећати се presents access to a memory and takes genitive.

Памтим њен број телефона, али се не сећам када ми га је дала.

I remember her phone number, but I don't remember when she gave it to me.

Perfective запамтити means commit to memory or retain successfully. Подсетити некога на нешто means remind someone of something and has a different participant frame.

Подсети ме на адресу кад будемо наручивали такси.

Remind me of the address when we order a taxi.

These are lexical relatives, not substitutes obtained by dropping се.

Perfect-tense auxiliary deletion

In affirmative third-person singular perfect, је is omitted beside се:

Милица се сетила обећања и одмах ме позвала.

Milica remembered the promise and called me immediately.

Not Милица се је сетила. Other persons retain the auxiliary: Сетио сам се, Сетили смо се, Они су се сетили. Negative није also remains: Милица се није сетила.

Micro-dialogue

„Сећаш ли се како се звао онај мајстор?“ — „Лица се сећам, али имена не могу да се сетим.“ — „Можда пише на старом рачуну.“ — „Тачно, сад сам се сетио где сам га оставио.“

‘Do you remember the name of that repairman?’ — ‘I remember the face, but I can't remember the name.’ — ‘Maybe it's written on the old receipt.’ — ‘Right, now I remember where I left it.’

The dialogue contrasts an accessible visual memory with two successful retrieval boundaries.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: State or retrieval?

Translate I remember that street well, I finally remembered the street name, and I can't remember the number. Use сећати се, сетити се, and perfective сетити се under не могу да.

Task 2: Build the pronoun cluster

Replace старог професора in Сећам се старог професора with an unstressed pronoun. Then make it emphatic and contrast him with another professor using full њега.

Common Mistakes

❌ Сећам се нашу стару кућу.

Incorrect — сећати се governs genitive, not accusative.

✅ Сећам се наше старе куће и дворишта иза ње.

I remember our old house and the yard behind it.

❌ Сетио сам се на његов рођендан.

Incorrect government — standard сетити се takes a bare genitive complement.

✅ Сетио сам се његовог рођендана на време.

I remembered his birthday in time. (male speaker)

❌ Сећам се га из основне школе.

Incorrect clitic order — the weak genitive pronoun precedes се.

✅ Сећам га се из основне школе.

I remember him from primary school.

❌ Она се је сетила где су карте.

Incorrect — affirmative third-person singular је is omitted beside се.

✅ Она се сетила где су карте.

She remembered where the tickets were.

❌ Не могу да се сећам шифре сада.

Wrong aspect for failed one-time retrieval — use сетити се after не могу да.

✅ Не могу сада да се сетим шифре.

I can't remember the password right now.

Key Takeaways

  • Сећати се presents an available or sustained memory; сетити се presents successful retrieval.
  • Both verbs require се and a genitive noun complement.
  • Genitive pronoun clitics precede се: сећам га се.
  • Clauses with да, како, где, or another interrogative can express remembered content.
  • Keep памтити + accusative, запамтити, and подсетити некога на нешто as distinct constructional frames.
