Мењати / променити is the central aspect pair for altering something or for something becoming different. Мењати presents the process, repetition, or an unbounded habit; променити presents one difference as achieved. English change hides another essential choice: Serbian uses a direct object when an agent changes something, but often adds се when the subject itself undergoes the change.
Principal Forms
| Form | мењати (imperfective) | променити (perfective) |
|---|---|---|
| l-participle (m./f./n. sg.; m./f./n. pl.)
| Future I, 1st singular |
The alternation is real and must be spelled exactly: мењам has њ, present променим does not, and passive промењен has it again. The l-participle is променио, not променуо. Промењивати is a secondary imperfective used especially for repeated or systematic alterations, but everyday learners can cover the core contrast with мењати / променити.
Changing Something: Accusative Object
With an external agent, the changed item is a direct accusative object. Imperfective мењати keeps the alteration open or repeated.
We’re changing the schedule right now because two colleagues won’t be there on Friday.
He changes the password for his work account every month.
Perfective променити says that a new state or version is obtained.
We changed the meeting date from Tuesday to Thursday.
Change the address on the application before you submit the form.
The са + genitive / на + accusative frame explicitly names the old and new values. When context supplies them, the bare accusative object is enough:
Perfective present is not an ongoing present. It is natural in a future, conditional, or subordinate environment.
If you change your phone number, let me know that same day.
Undergoing Change:
When no external changer is profiled, се builds an intransitive change-of-state frame. Compare ветар је променио правац “the wind changed its direction” with правац ветра се променио “the wind direction changed.”
The weather changes quickly in the mountains, even in the middle of summer.
Her attitude changed after the conversation with the doctor.
This се is not a literal “self.” It marks the subject as the undergoer while leaving the cause unexpressed. If the cause becomes the subject, remove се and use an accusative object.
The new evidence changed her attitude toward the proposal.
The two constructions therefore describe the same causal situation from different information structures. See reflexive and se-verbs for the broader family.
Result, Duration, and Reversal
Perfective променити guarantees that some relevant difference was achieved, not that the new state lasted forever. A later reversal does not cancel the earlier completed change.
She changed her mind in the morning, but by evening she had changed it again and returned to the original plan.
Imperfective can combine with duration when the focus is the work of altering rather than the finished result.
They spent two hours changing the settings, and the system still wasn’t working properly.
There is no contradiction: мењали су does not entail a satisfactory result. For more on why prefixation does not simply mean “past,” see aspect pairs are not synonyms.
Exchange, Replacement, and Other English “Change” Verbs
Serbian often chooses a more specific verb than English:
| Serbian frame | Core meaning |
|---|---|
| заменити старо новим | replace one item with another |
| пресести | change trains, buses, or other transport by transferring |
Where can I exchange euros for dinars without a large commission?
We replaced the worn-out faucet with a new one, but we didn’t touch the pipes.
I got soaked on the way, so I need to change clothes before the meeting. (female speaker)
Променити мишљење and предомислити се both express changing one’s mind. The first foregrounds the resulting opinion; the second packages reconsideration as one lexical event.
Passive and Clitic Behavior
The result passive uses промењен with agreement. It is useful when the new state matters more than the agent.
The password has been changed, but the other security settings were left untouched.
Accusative clitics stand in the ordinary second-position cluster: With reflexive се, affirmative third-singular је drops.
The plan changed as soon as we learned that the road was closed.
Micro-dialogue
‘Why are you changing the booking?’ — ‘They changed the departure time, so I’ll take a later flight.’ — ‘Will you change the hotel too?’ — ‘No, the accommodation is staying the same.’
The dialogue moves from an alteration in progress to an achieved external change, then uses perfective променити хотел for a possible change of selected accommodation.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Who changes what?
Write one pair from the same situation: first make a person the agent with променити + accusative, then make the affected item the subject with променити се. Keep the perfective boundary in both.
Task 2: Choose the precise English “change” verb
Translate changing a password, changing wet clothes, changing buses, and replacing an old battery with a new one. Use four appropriate Serbian constructions rather than repeating променити.
Common Mistakes
Incorrect for an action in progress — perfective променим does not express an ongoing present.
I’m changing next week’s schedule now.
Incorrect — је drops beside се in the affirmative third-person singular perfect.
The arrangement changed after lunch.
Incorrect — the l-participle is променио, not променуо.
The director changed the rules without notice.
Incorrect spelling — the passive participle is промењена with њ.
The final version was changed this morning after the last check.
