postajati / postati (to become)

Serbian постајати / постати means “become”: a person or thing changes into a new state, role, or classification. Learn the two verbs together. Imperfective постајати presents a gradual, repeated, or ongoing change; perfective постати presents the boundary at which the new state comes into force.

Usable knowledge also includes the stem contrast постај- / постан-, the predicate case, agreement, and the fact that this verb is neither reflexive nor transitive. English become hides most of that information. The stem alternation belongs with the other patterns surveyed in irregular present forms.

The aspectual pair

Дани постају све краћи, а јутра све хладнија.

The days are becoming shorter and the mornings colder.

Imperfective постају presents gradual changes already under way.

После вишемесечне обуке Ана је постала вођа тима.

After several months of training, Ana became the team leader.

Perfective постала је presents the transition into a new role as attained. The resulting state may continue, but perfective aspect itself asserts the transition, not its permanent duration.

Сваким новим издањем програм је постајао поузданији.

With each new release, the program became more reliable.

The distributive phrase сваким новим издањем motivates imperfective постајао: the change unfolded in stages. A single decisive update could instead be described with постао је поузданији.

💡
Choose постајати when you can watch or repeat the development; choose постати when the sentence identifies entry into the new state.

Present forms: two different stems

The imperfective uses постај-. The perfective uses постан-, not a regularized form built directly from the infinitive.

Personпостајати (imperfective)постати (perfective)
јапостајемпостанем
типостајешпостанеш
он / она / онопостајепостане
мипостајемопостанемо
випостајетепостанете
они / оне / онапостајупостану

Овај разговор постаје непријатан, па предлажем кратку паузу.

This conversation is becoming unpleasant, so I suggest a short break.

Imperfective present describes a change occurring now. Perfective present normally appears in a future-oriented subordinate, modal, or habitual frame rather than as an event visibly unfolding now.

Кад постанеш пунолетан, моћи ћеш сам да потпишеш уговор.

When you become an adult, you will be able to sign the contract yourself.

Постанеш is morphologically present but prospective after кад. Aspect does not equal tense.

The pair has stem and accent behavior that cannot be predicted safely from the English translation. Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark pitch accent or vowel length, so the practical solution is to memorize the written principal forms постајати — постајем — постају and постати — постанем — постану.

L-participles, future, and imperatives

Formпостајатипостати
l-participle, m./f./n. singularпостајао / постајала / постајалопостао / постала / постало
l-participle, m./f./n. pluralпостајали / постајале / постајалапостали / постале / постала
Future I, 1st singularпостајаћупостаћу
imperative, 2nd sg. / 1st pl. / 2nd pl.постај / постајмо / постајтепостани / постанимо / постаните

The l-participle agrees with the subject:

Село је постајало све тише, а улице су постајале празне.

The village was becoming quieter and the streets were becoming empty.

Neuter село selects постајало; feminine plural улице selects постајале. Perfective постало / постале would present attained changes instead.

The perfective imperative is much more useful in ordinary advice because it calls for entry into a state:

Постани члан библиотеке и добићеш приступ дигиталној збирци.

Become a library member and you will get access to the digital collection.

Imperfective постај is grammatically possible when gradual or repeated becoming is deliberately framed, but it has fewer everyday uses. Do not treat the two imperatives as simple stylistic variants.

Predicate adjectives use agreement

An adjective after постајати / постати describes the new property and agrees with the subject in gender and number. It appears in the nominative predicate form.

После одмора Марко је постао стрпљивији, а Јелена много ведрија.

After the vacation Marko became more patient and Jelena much more cheerful.

Путеви постају клизави чим температура падне испод нуле.

The roads become slippery as soon as the temperature falls below zero.

Masculine Марко selects стрпљивији, feminine Јелена selects ведрија, and masculine plural путеви selects клизави. English adjectives do not show this agreement.

Predicate nouns: nominative and instrumental

With a noun naming the new identity, profession, or role, modern neutral Serbian very commonly uses the nominative.

Моја сестра је постала архитекта и сада ради у Новом Саду.

My sister became an architect and now works in Novi Sad.

После гласања Никола је постао председник удружења.

After the vote Nikola became president of the association.

The predicate noun identifies what the subject became. It is not a direct object; постати is intransitive.

An unpreposed instrumental predicate is historically established, but in contemporary Serbian it is chiefly (archaic/literary). Neutral usage strongly prefers the nominative.

После дуге службе постао је управником целог имања.

After long service he became manager of the entire estate. (archaic/literary)

The former semantic opposition between nominative identity and instrumental acquired capacity has largely been neutralized. Instrumental управником remains grammatical in marked texts, but for most learners it is primarily a recognition pattern rather than an active neutral choice.

💡
For active everyday Serbian, use nominative predicate nouns safely: постала је лекар, постао је председник. Recognize instrumental predicates such as постао је председником in archaic or literary texts.

Impersonal frames and dative clitics

Постајати / постати can introduce a new impersonal state. A dative clitic identifies the experiencer.

Одједном ми је постало јасно зашто су отказали путовање.

Suddenly it became clear to me why they canceled the trip.

The subjectless frame uses neuter постало and predicative adverb јасно. Dative ми precedes auxiliary је in the natural clitic cluster.

После трећег спрата постајало нам је све теже да носимо кутије.

After the third floor, it was becoming increasingly difficult for us to carry the boxes.

Imperfective постајало presents a gradual worsening; нам marks who experiences it. Do not add reflexive се.

Postati is not nastati

Постати normally attributes a new property or identity to an existing carrier. Настати means that a situation, entity, or state comes into existence.

После спајања две екипе настало је ново одељење, а Милица је постала његова руководитељка.

After the two teams merged, a new department came into existence, and Milica became its manager.

The department настало је; Milica постала је something. English become, arise, and come into being can blur this lexical division.

Micro-dialogue

— Да ли још желиш да постанеш ветеринарка? — Да, а пракса у прихватилишту ми постаје све занимљивија.

— Do you still want to become a veterinarian? — Yes, and the placement at the animal shelter is becoming more and more interesting to me.

Perfective постанеш names the desired future transition; imperfective постаје describes a development now in progress.

Common Mistakes

Regularizing the perfective present

❌ Кад постам спреман, јавићу ти се.

Incorrect — the perfective present uses the stem ‘постан-’: ‘постанем’.

✅ Кад постанем спреман, јавићу ти се.

When I become ready, I will get in touch with you.

Adding a reflexive particle

❌ Кад се постанем сигурнија у говору, водићу презентације.

Incorrect — ‘постати’ is not reflexive; remove ‘се’ from the subordinate clause.

✅ Кад постанем сигурнија у говору, водићу презентације.

When I become more confident in speaking, I will give presentations.

Using an accusative predicate noun

❌ Тамара је постала директорку школе.

Incorrect — the new role is a predicate noun, not a direct object; use nominative or, in marked styles, instrumental.

✅ Тамара је постала директорка школе.

Tamara became the principal of the school.

Using perfective present for an ongoing change

❌ Време сада постане све хладније.

Incorrect for a change unfolding now — use imperfective ‘постаје’.

✅ Време сада постаје све хладније.

The weather is now becoming colder and colder.

Practice

Task 1: Build the form set

Give the first-person singular, third-person plural, feminine l-participle, and second-person singular imperative of both постајати and постати. Then use the perfective present in a clause beginning with кад.

Task 2: Choose the predicate frame

Write three sentences: one with an agreeing adjective, one with a neutral nominative profession noun, and one (archaic/literary) sentence with an instrumental role noun. Add an impersonal sentence with dative ми or нам.

Key Takeaways

  • Постајати presents gradual or repeated becoming; постати presents entry into the new state.
  • Memorize both stem sets: постајем / постају and постанем / постану.
  • Adjective predicates agree in the nominative; noun predicates normally use nominative, while instrumental is chiefly archaic or literary in contemporary Serbian.
  • The verb is intransitive and non-reflexive; impersonal frames can contain a dative experiencer.
