Serbian читати / прочитати is a model aspect pair for “read.” Imperfective читати opens the reading activity or presents it as a habit; perfective прочитати presents a text as read through to a relevant endpoint. English read hides this distinction in both spelling and translation, so learn the two Serbian verbs together.
Usable knowledge also includes the present forms, the case of the text, the dative recipient in “read something to someone,” and the position of object clitics. The wider logic of the contrast is developed on the imperfective meaning and perfective meaning pages.
Activity, habit, or completed reading
Use читати when the sentence looks inside the activity, gives its duration, or presents reading as a routine.
Сада читам интервју који си ми послала.
I am reading the interview you sent me now. (addressing a woman)
Пред спавање обично читамо по двадесетак минута.
Before bed we usually read for about twenty minutes.
Neither sentence asserts that a whole text has been finished. Perfective прочитати adds that boundary.
Прочитала сам цео уговор и означила две нејасне тачке.
I read the entire contract and marked two unclear points. (female speaker)
Кад прочиташ поруку, јави ми шта мислиш.
When you have read the message, let me know what you think.
In the second example, прочиташ is morphologically present but refers to a future completed reading after кад. Perfective does not mean “past”; it presents a boundary.
Complete present paradigms
Both verbs have a transparent -ам present. The prefix про- remains throughout the perfective paradigm.
| Person | читати (imperfective) | прочитати (perfective) |
|---|---|---|
| ја | читам | прочитам |
| ти | читаш | прочиташ |
| он / она / оно | чита | прочита |
| ми | читамо | прочитамо |
| ви | читате | прочитате |
| они / оне / она | читају | прочитају |
Шта читате ових дана?
What are you reading these days? (plural/polite)
Ако прочитамо упутство пре монтаже, избећи ћемо непотребне грешке.
If we read the instructions before assembly, we will avoid unnecessary mistakes.
The perfective present прочитамо is licensed by future-oriented ако. For an event happening at the moment of speaking, use читамо.
Ordinary Serbian spelling does not mark pitch accent or vowel length. The practical principal forms are читати — читам — читају and прочитати — прочитам — прочитају.
Past, future, and imperative forms
| Form | читати | прочитати |
|---|---|---|
| l-participle, m. / f. / n. singular | читао / читала / читало | прочитао / прочитала / прочитало |
| l-participle, m. / f. / n. plural | читали / читале / читала | прочитали / прочитале / прочитала |
| Future I, 1st singular | читаћу | прочитаћу |
| imperative, 2nd sg. / 1st pl. / 2nd pl. | читај / читајмо / читајте | прочитај / прочитајмо / прочитајте |
The imperfective imperative invites an activity or establishes a routine; the perfective imperative requests one complete reading.
Читај наглас да бисмо чули како звучи последњи пасус.
Read aloud so that we can hear how the final paragraph sounds.
Прочитај услове пре него што прихватиш понуду.
Read the terms through before you accept the offer.
The distinction is not about politeness. Читајте and прочитајте are both plural or polite; aspect determines whether the request profiles activity or completion.
Government: what, to whom, and about what
The text read is normally a direct object in the accusative: читати књигу, прочитати извештај, читати вести. With masculine animate nouns, the same accusative marks the person whose work or public statements are being read.
На путу до посла читам вести на телефону.
On the way to work I read the news on my phone.
To say “read something to someone,” put the listener in the dative and the text in the accusative.
Деда унуци свако вече чита по једну причу.
Grandpa reads his granddaughter one story every evening.
The frame is читати некоме нешто: dative унуци, accusative причу. English uses to optionally; Serbian marks the recipient with case.
For a topic, use о + locative.
Читала сам о новој изложби, али још нисам видела фотографије.
I read about the new exhibition, but I have not seen the photographs yet. (female speaker)
Useful manner phrases include наглас “aloud,” у себи “silently/to oneself,” and пажљиво “carefully.” A language commonly appears after на + locative: читати на српском.
Object clitics keep second-position order
An accusative clitic replaces the text; a dative clitic replaces the recipient. In a cluster, dative precedes accusative.
Извештај је кратак; прочитао сам га у аутобусу.
The report is short; I read it on the bus. (male speaker)
Бакина писма су избледела, али нам их мајка понекад чита.
Grandma’s letters have faded, but our mother sometimes reads them to us.
In нам их чита, dative нам precedes accusative их. The clitics are not placed after the object as English pronouns are; they occupy the Serbian early-clause cluster.
Читати се is not the dictionary form for “read.” In Овај роман се лако чита, се creates a middle construction meaning “This novel is easy to read.” Do not add it to ordinary transitive uses.
The marked secondary imperfective прочитавати
Plain читати is the normal verb for current or habitual reading. Прочитавати is an attested secondary imperfective that retains the “read through” meaning, but it needs a supportive distributive or institutional context and is not the everyday replacement for читати.
На курсу студенти прочитавају по једну драму недељно и воде дневник читања.
In the course, the students read one play through each week and keep a reading journal. (academic)
The phrase по једну драму недељно supplies repeated complete texts. For casual reading without such counted endpoints, use читати. See secondary imperfectives for the broader pattern.
Micro-dialogue
— Јеси ли прочитао мој имејл? — Почео сам, али га још читам; одговорићу ти вечерас.
— Have you read my email? — I started, but I am still reading it; I will reply this evening. (male respondent)
The question asks whether the endpoint has been reached. The reply rejects completion and switches naturally to imperfective читам.
Common Mistakes
Using perfective for an activity in progress
❌ Сада прочитам роман и не чујем телефон.
Incorrect for an activity in progress — perfective ‘прочитам’ presents completion, not ongoing reading now.
✅ Сада читам роман и не чујем телефон.
I am reading a novel now and cannot hear the phone.
Using imperfective when a finished text is essential
❌ Читао сам цео извештај за пола сата и одмах га послао директорки.
Incorrect for the intended completion claim — ‘за пола сата’ and the later sending require the report to have been read through.
✅ Прочитао сам цео извештај за пола сата и одмах га послао директорки.
I read the entire report in half an hour and immediately sent it to the director. (male speaker)
Giving о an accusative complement
❌ Читамо о нову изложбу у градском музеју.
Incorrect case — ‘о’ takes the locative in this topic phrase.
✅ Читамо о новој изложби у градском музеју.
We are reading about the new exhibition at the city museum.
Adding lexical се to the ordinary verb
❌ Свако јутро се читам новине уз кафу.
Incorrect — ordinary ‘читати’ is transitive and does not take lexical ‘се’.
✅ Свако јутро читам новине уз кафу.
Every morning I read the newspaper over coffee.
Practice
Task 1: Choose the viewpoint
Write one sentence with читати for reading in progress, one for a habit, and one with прочитати for a completed text. Add a future-oriented кад clause with прочитати.
Task 2: Build the constructional frame
Use читати некоме нешто with a dative recipient and accusative text, then replace both objects with clitics in the order dative + accusative. Add a separate sentence with о + locative.
Key Takeaways
- Читати presents reading as an activity or habit; прочитати presents a text as read through.
- Memorize читам / читају, читао, and читај, together with the corresponding prefixed forms.
- The text is accusative, a recipient is dative, and a topic follows о + locative.
- Plain читати is the normal everyday imperfective; прочитавати is context-sensitive and distributive.
