Translationese and Natural Serbian Style

Translationese is target-language prose whose vocabulary may be Serbian but whose information packaging still follows English. Typical symptoms include long noun stacks, repeated agentive passives, unnecessary subject pronouns, rigid subject–verb–object order, literal light verbs, and false friends such as евентуално for English eventually.

Natural translation does not mean making every sentence colloquial or replacing every international term. It means rebuilding relations in Serbian: deciding who should be the grammatical subject, which action deserves a verb, where clitics belong, what can remain implicit, and which register the reader expects.

Diagnose structure before changing words

A literal sentence can be grammatical and still sound translated. Read the paragraph at three levels:

  1. Proposition: what facts, conditions, and commitments must remain?
  2. Information structure: what is already known, what is new, and what deserves final focus?
  3. Genre: does the target need legal traceability, academic caution, public clarity, or conversational ease?

Word-by-word substitution answers none of these. A strong translation may split one English sentence into two, turn a noun into a verb, make an English passive active, or omit an explicit pronoun that Serbian recovers from the verb.

Unpack English noun stacks

English can place several nouns before a head: customer data protection policy update. Serbian must spell out the relations with adjectives, genitives, prepositions, relative clauses, or—often most clearly—verbs.

❌ Измена политике заштите података корисника ступа на снагу у понедељак, када почиње примена захтева безбедности налога.

Translation-heavy literal draft — the stacked genitives make ownership and scope difficult to parse, although the sentence is grammatical.

✅ У понедељак ступа на снагу измењена политика заштите корисничких података. Тада почињемо да примењујемо и нове захтеве за безбедност налога.

The revised customer-data protection policy takes effect on Monday. We will then begin applying the new account-security requirements.

The revision does not merely shorten the phrase. It separates two events, uses измењена to identify the policy, and gives примењивати a human/institutional subject.

Nominalization is useful in legal and academic registers when a process must be named and classified. The problem is not every noun in -ње; it is a chain whose relations the reader must reconstruct.

Спровођење поступка процене утицаја прописано је законом.

Conducting an impact-assessment procedure is prescribed by law. (appropriate formal nominalization)

💡
Do not mechanically “de-nominalize.” Ask whether the target genre needs a named procedure or a reader who knows who must do what next.

Rebuild passives according to topic and agency

English uses the passive freely to maintain subject continuity. Serbian has a periphrastic passive, a се passive/impersonal, and active clauses. Choose according to discourse, not source syntax.

❌ Захтев је прегледан од стране нашег тима и одговор ће бити послат од стране координатора.

Translation-heavy — repeated од стране passives hide two relevant agents.

✅ Наш тим је прегледао захтев, а координатор ће вам послати одговор.

Our team reviewed the request, and the coordinator will send you a reply.

When the agent is unknown or irrelevant, passive remains natural:

Пријаве се примају до петка, а резултати ће бити објављени почетком јуна.

Applications are accepted until Friday, and the results will be published in early June. (neutral public information)

Се presents a general process; the participial passive foregrounds a future result. Neither needs an invented agent.

An English inanimate subject may also require restructuring. Serbian can say Извештај показује да..., but not every document needs to “perform” a human action.

Анализа показује да су трошкови порасли, док се у извештају предлаже постепено смањење расхода.

The analysis shows that costs have increased, while the report proposes a gradual reduction in expenditure.

Here lexical convention licenses анализа показује; impersonal у извештају се предлаже avoids personifying the report twice.

Omit pronouns unless they do discourse work

Serbian verb forms normally identify the subject. An explicit ја, ти, он, она, ми, ви, они marks contrast, correction, topic shift, or emphasis—not simple grammatical completeness.

❌ Ја мислим да ми морамо да променимо наш план пре него што ми пошаљемо понуду.

Translation-heavy without contrast — repeated explicit ми and possessive наш overload recoverable subjects.

✅ Мислим да морамо да променимо план пре него што пошаљемо понуду.

I think we need to change the plan before sending the offer.

Keep the pronoun when contrast is intended:

Ја ћу разговарати с клијентом, а ти провери коначне износе.

I'll speak to the client, and you check the final amounts. (contrastive subjects)

English possessives also disappear when ownership is obvious or expressed reflexively. Serbian свој tracks the clause subject; mechanically repeating његов/њен can change the referent.

Free word order is structured, not random

Rigid English order can hide Serbian topic and focus and can disrupt second-position clitics. Neutral Serbian often starts with a time, setting, or established topic and places important new material later.

❌ Ја сам послала њему уговор јуче.

Grammatical only with heavy contrasts; unnatural as a neutral rendering of ‘I sent him the contract yesterday.’

✅ Јуче сам му послала уговор.

I sent him the contract yesterday. (female speaker; neutral order)

Once the contract is pronominal:

✅ Јуче сам му га послала.

I sent it to him yesterday. (female speaker)

The cluster сам му га follows the first unit јуче and keeps auxiliary–dative–accusative order. A translator cannot preserve English constituent order and then place Serbian clitics independently.

На крају састанка представили смо решење које је тим развијао шест месеци.

At the end of the meeting, we presented the solution that the team had been developing for six months.

The time frame comes first, the action next, and the newly identified solution receives expansion at the end. For systematic alternatives, see Basic SVO and Word-Order Freedom.

False friends and lexical calques

Naturalness sometimes depends on one lexical decision, but the solution is not blanket avoidance of internationalisms.

English triggerMisleading Serbian formChoose by meaning
eventuallyевентуалнона крају, с временом; Serbian евентуално means “possibly/if necessary”
actualактуеланстваран, стварни; актуелан means “current/topical”
realizeреализоватисхватити/увидети a fact; реализовати/спровести a project
applyаплицирати everywhereпријавити се, применити, нанети, важити—according to frame
take placeузети местоодржати се for an event; догодити се for an occurrence
make a decisionнаправити одлукудонети одлуку

❌ Евентуално смо схватили да се састанак неће узети место у петак.

Incorrect calques — евентуално does not mean ‘eventually,’ and events do not узети место.

✅ На крају смо схватили да се састанак неће одржати у петак.

Eventually, we realized that the meeting would not take place on Friday.

❌ То није актуелни узрок квара, већ само једна могућност.

Wrong false friend for ‘actual’ — актуелни means current or topical, not real.

✅ То није стварни узрок квара, већ само једна могућност.

That is not the actual cause of the malfunction, but only one possibility.

Реализовати пројекат is established in professional Serbian; реализовао сам да грешим is the English calque. Precision beats automatic purism.

Articles, definiteness, and one

English articles often disappear because Serbian expresses discourse status through context, demonstratives, order, and adjective form. Do not insert један for every a/an. Use it when “one/certain” matters.

❌ Послали су нам један извештај који смо тражили јуче.

Awkward if the report is already uniquely identified — један wrongly suggests one unspecified report.

✅ Послали су нам извештај који смо јуче тражили.

They sent us the report we requested yesterday.

Један колега ми је препоручио овај речник, али се не сећам који.

A colleague recommended this dictionary to me, but I don't remember which one. (један appropriately means an unspecified member)

Parallel rewrites for two registers

Suppose the English source says: “We are currently in the process of implementing the new access policy. You will be contacted if your account is impacted. Please reach out to support for any questions.” A literal Serbian version would be heavy and passive. The target changes with setting.

Formal client notice

Поштовани корисници, уводимо нова правила приступа систему. Ако промена утиче на ваш налог, обавестићемо вас директно. За сва питања обратите се служби подршке.

Dear users, we are introducing new system-access rules. If the change affects your account, we will notify you directly. For any questions, contact support. (formal client notice)

Internal team message

Здраво свима, управо уводимо нова правила приступа. Проверите своје налоге, а ако нешто запне, јавите се тиму за подршку.

Hi everyone, we're introducing the new access rules now. Check your accounts, and if anything gets stuck, contact the support team. (informal internal message)

organizationgreeting → change → consequence → helpgreeting → immediate task → fallback

Neither version is a bag of synonyms. Vocabulary, syntax, address, density, and sequence shift together. The workflow on Editing and Normalizing Serbian Prose helps maintain those choices across a whole document.

Script and standard are part of the translation brief

Translate into the requested Serbian script rather than treating Latin as an informal draft of Cyrillic. Preserve љ/lj, њ/nj, џ/dž, ђ/đ, ћ/ć, ч/č, ж/ž, ш/š exactly. Keep product names, code, and URLs in their official form when identity matters.

Do not “domesticate” Ijekavian Serbian into Ekavian or replace Bosnian, Croatian, and Montenegrin forms merely to make quoted speakers sound casual. These are questions of variety, standard, quotation fidelity, and editorial policy—not a ladder from informal to formal Serbian.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Rebuild an agentive passive

Стручни тим ће проценити ризик, а директорка ће до петка одобрити коначни план.

The expert team will assess the risk, and the director will approve the final plan by Friday. Answer: two relevant English passive agents become coordinated Serbian subjects.

Task 2: Resolve a false friend

Ако на крају не добијемо дозволу, евентуално можемо да померимо догађај за јун.

If we ultimately do not receive the permit, we could possibly move the event to June. Answer: на крају translates ‘ultimately/eventually’; евентуално correctly means ‘possibly/as an option.’

Common Mistakes

Preserving every English noun as a Serbian noun

❌ Након извршења провере исправности документације уследиће вршење слања одговора.

Translation-heavy bureaucratic nominalization obscures the two actions.

✅ Када проверимо документацију, послаћемо одговор.

Once we check the documentation, we will send a reply.

Deleting every passive mechanically

❌ Неко је објавио резултате у понедељак.

Poor rewrite when the agent is unknown and irrelevant — неко invents an unhelpful participant.

✅ Резултати су објављени у понедељак.

The results were published on Monday.

Keeping explicit pronouns without contrast

❌ Ми ћемо вам се јавити када ми будемо имали више информација.

Translation-heavy — repeated ми has no contrastive function.

✅ Јавићемо вам се када будемо имали више информација.

We will contact you when we have more information.

Treating an internationalism as an automatic equivalent

❌ После разговора сам реализовала да је актуелни проблем много озбиљнији.

English-driven false friends — the speaker understood a real problem; she did not implement a current one.

✅ После разговора сам схватила да је стварни проблем много озбиљнији.

After the conversation, I realized that the actual problem was much more serious. (female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • Translate propositions and information structure, not just words and source order.
  • Unpack noun stacks with verbs, clauses, or explicit relations when readers need action and clarity.
  • Choose active, се passive, or participial passive according to agency and topic.
  • Omit subject pronouns unless they mark contrast, correction, or topic shift.
  • Rebuild word order around Serbian clitics and topic–focus structure.
  • Check false friends in context, while retaining established international and technical terms where they are precise.
  • Register, script, address, density, and organization must change as a coordinated bundle.
