Editing and Normalizing Serbian Prose

Editorial normalization makes a text internally coherent for a defined audience and publication. It does not mean replacing every regional form with an Ekavian form, every active sentence with an impersonal one, or every conversational rhythm with bureaucratic prose. A good editor repairs accidental inconsistency while preserving intentional voice.

In Serbian, normalization is a bundle of decisions: standard and regional baseline, script, terminology, clitic placement, punctuation, address forms, information density, and discourse organization. Before changing a sentence, establish the communicative setting and house style. The same wording cannot serve equally well as a chat message, public notice, legal record, and literary monologue.

Start with an editorial brief

Ask six questions before line-editing:

Normalize toward an explicit brief, not toward an imagined single “most correct” Serbian. Consistency without a purpose can erase meaningful regional, institutional, or personal choices.

Reflexes and standards: consistency without ranking

This guide uses contemporary Ekavian Serbian as its productive baseline. An Ekavian document should not drift accidentally between обавештење/обавјештење, следећи/сљедећи, and седница/сједница.

❌ Обавјештавамо вас да ће следећа сједница бити одржана у понедељак.

Editorially inconsistent for an Ekavian Serbian brief — Ijekavian обавјештавамо and сједница are mixed with Ekavian следећа.

✅ Обавештавамо вас да ће следећа седница бити одржана у понедељак.

We inform you that the next session will be held on Monday. (consistent Ekavian Serbian, formal)

If the brief specifies Ijekavian Serbian, the coherent revision is Обавјештавамо вас да ће сљедећа сједница... (regional: Ijekavian Serbian). That is not a lower or more informal level. Likewise, forms characteristic of Bosnian, Croatian, or Montenegrin standards are not “Serbian slang” to be normalized silently. Preserve quotations, respect the declared standard, and query genuine ambiguity.

Script: normalize running text, preserve real exceptions

Ordinary Serbian running text should use one script. Brands, URLs, email addresses, source-code strings, and exact quotations may legitimately remain in their issued form.

❌ Корисници треба да pošalju захтев преко портала.

Editorially inconsistent — the ordinary verb is switched to Latin inside a Cyrillic sentence.

✅ Корисници треба да пошаљу захтев преко портала.

Users should submit the request through the portal.

For technical assistance, write to support@example.rs. (a Latin-script email identifier correctly remains unchanged)

Do not convert Cyrillic mechanically from approximate ASCII Latin. s, c, z, dj do not uniquely recover с/ш, ц/ч/ћ, з/ж, ђ. Exact proofreading across scripts is covered in Proofreading Both Scripts.

Clitics and punctuation

Editing often exposes clitics stranded after an English-style introductory comma. A detached parenthetical does not provide a host for је, се, сам, га, ми. Either integrate the opening phrase without a comma or begin the clause with a stressed constituent.

❌ Према нашем мишљењу, је предлог довољно јасан.

Incorrect clitic placement — unstressed је cannot open the clause after a detached phrase.

✅ Према нашем мишљењу, предлог је довољно јасан.

In our opinion, the proposal is sufficiently clear.

❌ У прилогу, се налазе два обрасца која треба да попуните.

Incorrect — the comma needlessly separates the integrated opening phrase and strands се.

✅ У прилогу се налазе два обрасца која треба да попуните.

The attachment contains two forms that you need to complete.

Punctuation also includes Serbian quotation marks „…“, vocative commas, and clause boundaries. Correcting punctuation should clarify syntax, not merely insert a comma wherever an English source pauses.

Calques, passives, and bureaucratic weight

An English-shaped expression may be understandable yet stylistically unmotivated. Prefer an established Serbian collocation: донети одлуку, not направити одлуку; одржати састанак, not држати састанак in the meaning “hold an event.” The light-verb guide gives fuller patterns.

❌ Комисија је направила одлуку да држи састанак у петак.

Non-idiomatic calques — Serbian normally доноси одлуку and одржава састанак.

✅ Комисија је донела одлуку да састанак одржи у петак.

The commission decided to hold the meeting on Friday.

English agentive passives often become a natural Serbian active clause when the agent matters. But Serbian passive is not forbidden: retain it when the result or affected entity is the topic and the agent is irrelevant.

❌ Рок је био продужен од стране комисије након седнице.

Needlessly heavy in neutral prose — the named agent is clearer as the subject.

✅ Комисија је после седнице продужила рок.

The commission extended the deadline after the session.

Рок је продужен до петка, а сви кандидати су већ обавештени.

The deadline has been extended until Friday, and all candidates have already been informed. (appropriate result-focused passive)

Likewise, извршити достављање документације is possible bureaucratic nominalization but normally weaker than доставити документацију. In a regulation, the noun may be a defined legal event; in a public instruction, the verb usually helps the reader act.

Terminology: consistency before purism

Choose one term for one concept unless a contrast is intended. A product may define налог “account,” корисничко име “username,” and отпремити датотеку “upload a file.” Alternating налог, рачун, профил merely for variety can create three supposed objects.

Terminologically unstable — three nouns appear to name the same account without an explained distinction.

Open your account, then change your personal information in the account settings.

Do not replace every internationalism automatically. Сервер, интернет, софтвер and many professional terms are established; a forced domestic substitute may reduce precision. Editorial consistency is not lexical purism.

Address forms and voice

Choose ти for one familiar addressee and ви for several people or polite singular address. Optional courtesy capitalization Ви/Ваш can be used consistently in formal correspondence to one respected person; lowercase is grammatically correct and avoids ambiguity when addressing a group.

Dear Madam, please send us your case number. (formal singular courtesy capitalization)

Preserving voice means retaining deliberate spoken features in dialogue, a narrator's rhythm in literature, or a brand's established tone. Do not insert slang into an official notice, but do not turn Ћао, само да јавим... in a personal message into Овим путем Вас обавештавам... unless the setting itself has changed.

One message in three registers

The underlying facts are: maintenance begins Monday at 22:00, the system will be unavailable for about two hours, users should save changes, and support can answer questions.

Public service notice

Поштовани корисници, обавештавамо вас да ће надоградња система почети у понедељак у 22 часа. Систем неће бити доступан око два сата. Молимо вас да пре почетка радова сачувате све измене. За додатне информације обратите се служби подршке.

Dear users, please be advised that the system upgrade will begin on Monday at 10 p.m. The system will be unavailable for approximately two hours. Please save all changes before the work begins. For further information, contact support. (formal public notice)

Internal message to colleagues

Здраво свима, у понедељак у 22 часа почињемо надоградњу. Систем ће бити недоступан око два сата, па пре тога сачувајте све измене. Ако нешто није јасно, пишите тиму за подршку.

Hi everyone, we're starting the upgrade on Monday at 10 p.m. The system will be unavailable for about two hours, so save all changes beforehand. If anything is unclear, message the support team. (neutral internal message)

Одржавање система: понедељак, 22.00–24.00. Пре почетка сачувајте све измене.

System maintenance: Monday, 10 p.m.–midnight. Save all changes before it begins. (concise interface notice)

The vocabulary moves from обавештавамо/додатне информације to пишите and then compressed labels. The syntax moves from courteous full sentences to direct imperatives and a nominal heading. The script stays consistently Cyrillic; a real URL would remain unchanged. Address is explicit plural вас in the public notice, collegial свима internally, and impersonal/direct in the banner. Information density rises as space shrinks. Discourse organization changes from greeting → fact → action → contact, to a quick team update, to time → required action.

Record versus reader-facing explanation

An administrative record may foreground the procedural result:

Захтев је одбијен због непотпуне документације, у складу са чланом 12. Правилника.

The application was rejected because the documentation was incomplete, pursuant to Article 12 of the Regulations. (formal administrative record)

A reader-facing message should tell the person what happened and what to do next:

Нажалост, не можемо да одобримо ваш захтев јер недостаје потврда о уплати. Пошаљите потврду до петка и поново ћемо размотрити захтев.

Unfortunately, we cannot approve your application because proof of payment is missing. Send the proof by Friday and we will review the application again. (professional reader-facing message)

Neither register is universally better. The record maximizes traceability and legal reference; the message maximizes actionability and humane address.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Normalize without erasing variety

Екавски бриф: „Следеће обавештење биће објављено у среду.“ — Ијекавски бриф: „Сљедеће обавјештење биће објављено у сриједу.“

Ekavian brief: ‘The next notice will be published on Wednesday.’ — Ijekavian brief: the corresponding internally consistent Serbian Ijekavian version. Answer: normalize within the declared variety, not by ranking the varieties.

Task 2: Reduce weight while preserving legal content

Комисија ће проверити документацију и обавестити подносиоца захтева у року од осам дана.

The commission will check the documentation and notify the applicant within eight days. Answer: two coordinated active verbs replace unnecessary nominalizations while retaining the agent and deadline.

Common Mistakes

Treating Ijekavian Serbian as an informal style error

❌ Сваки ијекавски облик треба заменити екавским јер је екавски формалнији.

Incorrect factual premise — Ekavian and Ijekavian Serbian are both standard realizations; neither encodes greater formality.

✅ Рефлексе усклађујемо са декларисаном варијантом текста.

We align reflexes with the text's declared variety.

Converting legitimate identifiers with the running script

❌ Адресу support@example.rs треба пресловити у ћирилицу.

Incorrect — an email address is an exact identifier and must remain unchanged.

✅ Српски текст је ћирилички, а адреса support@example.rs остаје у изворном облику.

The Serbian text is in Cyrillic, while support@example.rs remains in its original form.

Replacing every active sentence with a passive

❌ Одговор ће бити послат од стране наше службе у року од два дана.

Needlessly heavy where the service is a relevant, concise agent.

✅ Наша служба ће послати одговор у року од два дана.

Our department will send a reply within two days.

Increasing formality until the voice disappears

❌ Драгом пријатељу пишем: „Овим путем Вас обавештавам да ћу приступити доласку у 19 часова.“

Comic register mismatch — bureaucratic wording and formal Вас erase the intended friendly voice.

✅ Драгом пријатељу пишем: „Стижем око седам, видимо се!“

I write to a close friend: ‘I'll arrive around seven—see you!’
