Serbian often offers a domestic word, an established internationalism, and a newer borrowing for roughly the same area of meaning. The choice is rarely a contest between a “pure” word and a “corrupt” one: рачунар, компјутер, применити, имплементирати, повратна информација, and фидбек belong to different collocations, audiences, and genres. An advanced writer learns the distinctions instead of replacing every internationalism mechanically.
Three relationships that look like synonymy
First identify what kind of pair you are dealing with.
| Relationship | Example | Learner decision |
|---|---|---|
| Broad doublet | рачунар / компјутер | Both are established; choose by house style, collocation, and audience. |
| Register contrast | одштампати / принтати | The first is neutral; the second is informal or workplace-technical. |
| Meaning has specialized | обавештење / нотификација | Нотификација commonly means a device or app alert, not every notice. |
| False equivalence | дневни ред / агенда | Дневни ред is the items for a meeting; агенда can also suggest a program or underlying program of aims. |
На рачунару ми стално искаче обавештење да ажурирам програм.
A notification telling me to update the program keeps popping up on my computer. (neutral)
Искључи нотификације за ту апликацију док траје састанак.
Turn off notifications for that app while the meeting is in progress. (neutral technical usage)
Here нотификација is not ornamental English influence: it names a familiar interface element. In a municipal letter, however, обавештење is normally the unmarked word.
Обавештење о измени радног времена објављено је на улазу.
The notice about the change in opening hours was posted at the entrance. (neutral/formal)
Domestic words are not automatically plain, and loans are not automatically precise
English-speaking learners often assume that an international-looking form is safest. That works for some technical terms, but it also produces false friends and needless abstraction. Имплементирати is established in technical and project-management prose when the object is a system, specification, or solution. Применити is usually better for applying a rule, method, or measure; спровести suits a procedure, reform, or survey; увести suits a new practice.
Развојни тим је имплементирао двофакторску аутентификацију.
The development team implemented two-factor authentication. (technical/professional)
Од понедељка примењујемо ново правило за повраћај робе.
Starting Monday, we are applying a new rule for merchandise returns. (neutral professional)
Општина ће спровести анкету о јавном превозу.
The municipality will conduct a survey about public transport. (formal public communication)
Conversely, a domestic-looking paraphrase can be longer or less exact than a recognized term. In an academic article, методологија, хипотеза, and корпус are ordinary technical vocabulary (academic). Replacing them with improvised descriptions does not make the prose clearer.
Institutional recommendations matter when a ministry, university, standards body, publisher, or terminology commission has fixed a term for one domain. They are domain decisions, not universal prohibitions. Check the glossary that governs the document, then use the chosen term consistently. A software company may require кориснички интерфејс; another may use корисничко окружење for a different concept. Consistency cannot repair a wrong definition.
Doublets can divide the semantic territory
Borrowing often creates specialization rather than permanent duplication. Пријава can be an application, registration, report, or login depending on context; апликација normally means a software application, though аплицирати also occurs in business and grant jargon. For a job or scholarship, пријавити се is the safest neutral construction.
Пријавила сам се на конкурс и послала сву документацију.
I responded to the call for applications and sent all the required documents. (female speaker; neutral)
Апликација чува пријаву само ако корисник потврди адресу.
The application saves the registration only if the user confirms the address. (technical)
Likewise, фидбек is common in informal professional exchange, while повратна информација fits public, academic, and carefully edited prose. Neither covers every use of English feedback: acoustic feedback is микрофонија, and customer comments may simply be коментари корисника.
Пошаљи ми фидбек до ручка, па ћу средити презентацију.
Send me your feedback by lunchtime, and I’ll fix up the presentation. (informal workplace speech)
Упитник прикупља повратне информације учесника након обуке.
The questionnaire collects participant feedback after the training. (formal/professional)
Style is a bundle, not a synonym switch
Suppose a service will be unavailable from 10 p.m. to midnight. The facts stay constant, but the whole register bundle changes.
Public service notice
Поштовани корисници, услуга ће вечерас од 22 до 24 часа бити привремено недоступна због редовног одржавања система. Хвала на разумевању.
Dear users, the service will be temporarily unavailable tonight from 10 p.m. to midnight because of scheduled system maintenance. Thank you for your understanding. (formal public notice)
Internal team message
Здраво свима, вечерас од десет до поноћи гасимо услугу због редовног одржавања. Ако вам то ремети тестирање, јавите ми до пет.
Hi everyone, tonight from ten to midnight we’re taking the service down for scheduled maintenance. If that disrupts your testing, let me know by five. (informal professional message)
| Dimension | Public notice | Internal message |
|---|---|---|
| Vocabulary | привремено недоступна | гасимо услугу |
| Syntax | agentless state; reason follows | active first-person plural; direct condition |
| Script | Cyrillic here; actual institution follows its policy | Cyrillic here; a team channel may specify Latin |
| Address | Поштовани корисници | Здраво свима, then second-person plural |
| Density | one compact service statement | action plus operational consequence |
| Organization | audience → interval → cause → courtesy | team → action → consequence → response deadline |
Changing одржавање to an English-looking noun would not itself modernize the first version. Changing Cyrillic to Latin would not make it conversational. Register emerges from the combination.
Here is a second contrast, this time between administrative and customer-facing prose.
Захтев се подноси електронским путем, а подносилац ће о исходу поступка бити обавештен у року од осам дана.
The request is submitted electronically, and the applicant will be notified of the outcome within eight days. (formal administrative)
Пошаљите захтев преко портала. Одговор ћемо вам послати у року од осам дана.
Send the request through the portal. We’ll send you a reply within eight days. (plain public-facing professional style)
The second version is not merely the first with simpler nouns. It names the channel, restores an agent, addresses the reader directly, and splits the information into two actions. The translation-style guide develops this structural editing further.
Serbian and neighboring standards are not register labels
Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, and Montenegrin share a large international vocabulary and many domestic formations, but they are distinct codified standards. A term associated with another standard is not simply “formal Serbian,” “colloquial Serbian,” or a synonym to scatter through a Serbian document. Quoted wording, a named institution, or a deliberately multilingual publication may require preserving it; otherwise follow the selected Serbian norm and the relevant house style.
This also prevents stereotypes. Serbian does not accept every internationalism while Croatian rejects all of them, and Bosnian or Montenegrin cannot be reduced to one preferred layer of vocabulary. Actual usage is domain-specific, variable, and historically layered.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Choose by domain
У подешавањима можете да искључите нотификације, али ће важна обавештења и даље стизати имејлом.
In the settings you can turn off notifications, but important notices will still arrive by email. Answer: нотификације names interface alerts; обавештења is broader.
Task 2: Rebuild the register bundle
Колеге, пошаљите ми коментаре до четвртка да бисмо у петак закључили извештај.
Colleagues, send me your comments by Thursday so that we can finalize the report on Friday. Answer: a direct internal request needs neither an English passive nor inflated nominalizations.
Common Mistakes
Treating the most international-looking word as the most formal
❌ Аплицирала сам за пасош у полицијској станици.
Poor neutral usage — аплицирати is business or grant jargon here, not the normal verb for submitting a passport application.
✅ Поднела сам захтев за пасош у полицијској станици.
I submitted an application for a passport at the police station. (female speaker; neutral)
Replacing an exact technical term just because it is international
❌ Програм за прегледање мрежних страна не подржава овај додатак.
Needlessly roundabout in ordinary technical prose where the established term прегледач is exact.
✅ Прегледач не подржава овај додатак.
The browser does not support this extension.
Copying an English bureaucratic passive
❌ Повратна информација ће бити пружена од стране тима након што евалуација буде извршена.
Translation-heavy — repeated passive and abstract nouns hide the relevant agent and action.
✅ Тим ће вам послати коментаре када заврши процену.
The team will send you comments when it completes the assessment.
Calling a neighboring standard a style of Serbian
❌ Хрватски је само српски с формалнијим домаћим речима.
Incorrect — Croatian is a distinct codified standard, not a Serbian register.
✅ Српски и хрватски су блиски и у великој мери међусобно разумљиви, али имају засебне норме.
Serbian and Croatian are closely related and largely mutually intelligible, but they have separate norms.
Key Takeaways
- Choose among domestic terms, internationalisms, and loans by meaning, collocation, domain, audience, and house style.
- Institutional terminology governs a defined domain; it is not a universal list of banned words.
- Doublets often specialize, so mechanical replacement can change meaning.
- Register is a coordinated bundle of vocabulary, syntax, script, address, density, and discourse organization.
- Neighboring standards are codified standards, not formal or informal layers of Serbian.
