English puts the experiencer in subject position: I like the apartment, I need a ticket, my back hurts. Three very common Serbian constructions distribute those roles differently. With свиђати се, what is liked is the nominative subject and the experiencer is dative; with lexical требати, what is needed is the subject and the person is dative; with болети, the painful body part is the subject and the experiencer is accusative.
Calling all three patterns “inversion” is a useful warning, but not a complete rule. They use different cases and требати also has a separate impersonal modal construction. The safest diagnostic is to identify the stimulus or needed thing, then check which case the experiencer receives.
| Meaning | Serbian frame | Agreement controller |
|---|---|---|
| like | нешто се свиђа некоме | liked thing |
| need a thing/person | нешто/неко треба некоме | needed thing/person |
| hurt | нешто боли некога | painful body part |
| should / need to act | треба да + present | impersonal треба |
Свиђати се: the appealing thing is the subject
In свиђа ми се стан, стан is nominative and controls singular agreement. The dative clitic ми means “to me,” while се is a required part of the verb. With a plural stimulus, the verb becomes plural: свиђају ми се прозори.
Свиђа ми се овај тихи крај, али ми се не свиђају високе кирије.
I like this quiet neighborhood, but I don't like the high rents.
Ани су се највише свиделе фотографије са путовања.
Ana liked the travel photos most.
English encourages learners to make “I” the nominative subject, make the liked thing accusative, and omit се. That produces a broken hybrid.
❌ Ја свиђам овај кафић јер има башту.
Incorrect — this copies English “I like”: the café must be the subject, the experiencer dative, and се is required.
✅ Свиђа ми се овај кафић јер има башту.
I like this café because it has a garden.
❌ Њој се свиђа нове завесе у дневној соби.
Incorrect — the plural stimulus нове завесе requires plural свиђају.
✅ Њој се свиђају нове завесе у дневној соби.
She likes the new curtains in the living room.
The long dative forms add contrast: мени, теби, њему, њој. They do not turn the experiencer into a subject.
Мени се предлог допада, али се Јовану уопште не свиђа.
I like the proposal, but Jovan doesn't like it at all.
Lexical требати: the needed thing is the subject
When требати means “be needed,” it is a full lexical verb with personal agreement. The needed item is nominative, while the person who needs it is dative.
Треба ми још једна столица, а гостима требају два додатна ћебета.
I need one more chair, and the guests need two extra blankets.
Требала нам је мирнија просторија за разговор.
We needed a quieter room for the conversation.
A needed person can also be the subject. Требаш ми is entirely standard in the lexical sense “I need you / you are needed by me.” It is not the modal “you should.”
Остани још мало — требаш ми да завршимо извештај.
Stay a little longer—I need you so we can finish the report.
(informal; regionally widespread) Personal требам is heard in this meaning, but it is not the neutral careful pattern taught here:
Ја требам нову пропусницу за зграду.
I need a new building pass. (Informal and regionally widespread personal construction.)
✅ Треба ми нова пропусница за зграду.
I need a new building pass.
Notice that plural agreement is meaningful, not optional: требају ми документи, not impersonal треба ми документи, in careful standard usage when concrete things are needed.
❌ За пријаву ми треба две оверене копије пасоша.
Incorrect in careful standard Serbian — plural needed things control plural требају.
✅ За пријаву ми требају две оверене копије пасоша.
I need two certified copies of my passport for the application.
The numeral phrase is plural here, so lexical требати agrees with it. Neutral impersonal треба belongs to the separate modal construction with another verb.
Modal требати: an impersonal predicate
With another verb, neutral careful Serbian normally uses impersonal треба / требало је / требало би plus да + present. The person is expressed by the verb inside the да-clause.
Треба да позовем мајстора пре подне.
I need to call the repair technician before noon.
Требало је да им јавимо да каснимо.
We should have told them we were running late.
(informal; regionally widespread) The personal modal is common in conversation:
Ми требамо да обновимо уговор до петка.
We need to renew the contract by Friday. (Informal and regionally widespread personal modal.)
✅ Треба да обновимо уговор до петка.
We need to renew the contract by Friday.
Personal modal forms such as требам да, требамо да, and требали су да are widespread (informal; regional in distribution). They should not be confused with the fully standard lexical требају ми кључеви. There is also a genuine syntactic pressure toward personal agreement in relative clauses, where a rigid impersonal form would be badly attached.
Стигли су сви волонтери који су требали да помогну око селидбе.
All the volunteers who were supposed to help with the move arrived.
Here који су требали is accepted because the relative pronoun is the subject within the relative clause. The useful editing lesson is not “personal требати is always wrong,” but “distinguish lexical need, neutral impersonal modality, and contexts that license personal agreement.” See the full two faces of trebati.
Болети: body part as subject, experiencer in the accusative
Serbian structures pain as “the body part hurts someone.” The body part is nominative and controls agreement; the person is an accusative clitic or full accusative phrase.
После целог дана за рачунаром боли ме врат.
After a whole day at the computer, my neck hurts.
Од јутрос ме боле колена, па ћу прескочити тренинг.
My knees have been hurting since this morning, so I'll skip practice.
English possessives are often unnecessary because ме, те, га, је, нас, вас, их already identify whose pain is involved. A possessive can be added for contrast, but it is not the default frame.
❌ Моја леђа ме боли после дуге вожње.
Incorrect — plural леђа controls plural боле; English singular “back” has triggered singular agreement.
✅ После дуге вожње боле ме леђа.
My back hurts after the long drive.
❌ Ја болим у рамену кад подигнем руку.
Incorrect — English makes “I” the subject, but Serbian uses the body part as subject and the experiencer in the accusative.
✅ Боли ме раме кад подигнем руку.
My shoulder hurts when I raise my arm.
Common Mistakes
Using one “inverted” case for all three verbs
❌ Мени боли глава од јаког светла.
Incorrect — the experiencer with болети is accusative ме, not dative ми/мени.
✅ Мене боли глава од јаког светла.
My head hurts because of the bright light.
Long мене is contrastive; neutral speech normally uses Боли ме глава.
Making the English object accusative after свиђати се
❌ Марку се свиђају нову песму.
Incorrect — the liked item is the nominative subject, not an accusative object.
✅ Марку се свиђа нова песма.
Marko likes the new song.
Treating lexical требати as invariably impersonal
❌ Треба ми нове батерије за лампу.
Incorrect in careful standard Serbian — plural needed things require требају.
✅ Требају ми нове батерије за лампу.
I need new batteries for the flashlight.
Treating modal требати as an ordinary personal verb
(informal; regionally widespread):
Ја бих требао да проверим адресу.
I should check the address. (Common informal personal agreement.)
✅ Требало би да проверим адресу.
I should check the address.
Practice
1. Identify subject and experiencer
Rewrite each sentence in neutral standard Serbian and state what controls agreement.
- Ја свиђам те старе куће.
- Ми требамо две копије уговора.
- Мени боли зглобови после трчања.
- Њој се свиђа сви предлози.
Suggested answers: Свиђају ми се те старе куће (houses); Требају нам две копије уговора (copies); Боле ме зглобови после трчања (joints); Њој се свиђају сви предлози (proposals).
2. Choose lexical or modal требати
Complete with an appropriate form.
- _ ми поуздан сарадник за овај посао.
- _ да пошаљемо понуду до подне.
- Јуче су нам _ додатне столице.
- То су људи који су _ да воде радионицу.
Answers: Треба; Треба; требале; требали.
Self-editing checklist
- With свиђати се, is the liked thing nominative, is the experiencer dative, and is се present?
- With lexical требати, does the needed thing control agreement: треба ми карта / требају ми карте?
- With modal требати, would impersonal треба да / требало је да / требало би да be the neutral careful form?
- With болети, is the body part nominative and the experiencer accusative?
- Did English word order hide the real Serbian agreement controller?
Key Takeaways
- Свиђати се assigns dative to the experiencer; lexical требати does too, while болети assigns accusative.
- The stimulus, needed entity, or painful body part controls agreement.
- Neutral modal требати is impersonal, but personal lexical forms and some personal modal uses are real and must not be collapsed into one ban.
