Свиђати се — свидети се expresses favorable impression, appeal, or attraction. Its Serbian architecture is roughly “X is pleasing to me”: X is the nominative subject and controls agreement, while the experiencer is dative. Imperfective свиђати се presents an ongoing or repeated impression; perfective свидети се commonly evaluates one bounded encounter or the onset of a favorable reaction.
Principal forms
Imperatives are morphologically possible but pragmatically marked: a speaker cannot normally command a genuine feeling. They occur mainly in playful advice such as Свиди им се какав јеси or when someone is urged to make a favorable impression. For ordinary “like this,” Serbian does not use an imperative of this verb.
Свиђа ми се мирис свежег хлеба из ове пекаре.
I like the smell of fresh bread from this bakery.
Нова правила нам се нису свидела, али смо их прихватили.
We didn't like the new rules, but we accepted them.
Subject, experiencer, and се
The liked person or thing is the subject. The person doing the liking is dative. Required се is part of the verb’s construction.
| Role | Serbian form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| appealing stimulus | nominative subject | ова столица / ове столице |
| experiencer | dative | ми / мени |
| predicate | agrees with subject | свиђа се / свиђају се |
Ова столица ми се свиђа, али ми је превише ниска.
I like this chair, but it is too low for me.
Ове столице ми се свиђају, нарочито оне поред прозора.
I like these chairs, especially the ones by the window.
The dative ми remains singular in both examples; agreement follows столица/столице. This inversion from English is the central difficulty.
The dative experiencer map places this frame beside пријати, недостајати, and other non-agentive experiences.
Dative forms and focus
Neutral experiencers are clitics ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им. Full forms мени, теби, њему, њој, нама, вама, њима add contrast or answer коме?
Мени се допада наслов, а њој се више свиђа фотографија на корицама.
I like the title, while she prefers the photograph on the cover.
Full мени, њој contrasts the experiencers. Neutral word order places the clitic before се: Фотографија јој се свиђа.
When the stimulus is first or second person, the verb agrees accordingly:
Свиђаш ми се, али не желим да пожурујемо ствари.
I like you / I'm attracted to you, but I don't want us to rush things.
Here implicit ти is the second-person singular subject; ми is the first-person dative experiencer.
Impression and attraction versus established affection
Свиђати се foregrounds how a stimulus strikes someone. It is natural for a design, proposal, place, performance, or person who makes a favorable impression. With people it can imply attraction.
Николи се свиђа нова колегиница, али су до сада разговарали само о послу.
Nikola likes the new colleague, but so far they have talked only about work.
Transitive волети instead foregrounds an established preference or affection.
Свидела ми се њена прва књига, а други роман сада већ заиста волим.
I liked her first book, and by now I genuinely love the second novel.
The distinction is not a fixed intensity scale. Context matters, but the grammatical viewpoint remains different. See волети versus свиђати се for the paired decision guide.
Ongoing impression versus bounded encounter
Imperfective свиђати се describes a continuing state, a repeated response, or the inside of an experience. Perfective свидети се commonly evaluates one encounter as a whole or marks that something won someone over.
Док сам живела тамо, највише ми се свиђала близина реке.
While I lived there, what I liked most was the closeness to the river. (female speaker)
Хотел ми се свидео чим сам видела тихо унутрашње двориште.
I liked the hotel as soon as I saw its quiet inner courtyard. (female speaker)
Perfective present appears in future or modal environments:
Ако ти се свиди први стан, ипак погледај и остале пре одлуке.
If you like the first flat, still look at the others before deciding.
This is not a mechanical tense contrast. Both members can occur in past and future; they package the reaction differently.
Past agreement and the missing auxiliary је
The l-participle agrees with the liked subject, not with the experiencer:
| Subject | Perfective past |
|---|---|
| филм | филм ми се свидео |
| представа | представа ми се свидела |
| место | место ми се свидело |
| глумци | глумци су ми се свидели |
In third-person singular perfect, auxiliary је is omitted next to reflexive се: Представа ми се свидела, not представа ми се је свидела. In the plural, auxiliary су remains: Глумци су ми се свидели.
Идеја јој се свидела, али јој рок није одговарао.
She liked the idea, but the deadline didn't suit her.
The cluster јој се is dative experiencer plus reflexive particle; no auxiliary је appears.
Clauses and abstract stimuli
A fact can be the stimulus through што + finite clause. A noun such as идеја can take a following да-clause.
Свиђа ми се што увек објасниш зашто нешто мењаш.
I like that you always explain why you are changing something.
Свиђа нам се идеја да састанак одржимо напољу.
We like the idea of holding the meeting outside.
Do not force an accusative clause after the English model I like that.... The Serbian main predicate remains third-person singular свиђа ми се.
Negation, questions, and synonyms
Negation precedes the verb: не свиђа ми се, while clitics remain in their cluster. Questions can use да ли or interrogative коме.
Зашто вам се не свиђа предложени распоред?
Why don't you like the proposed schedule? (plural or polite)
Допадати се — допасти се is a neutral synonym with the same subject–dative architecture. It may sound slightly more evaluative in some contexts, but it is not a different case frame.
Предлог ми се допада, али желим да чујем и мишљење правне службе.
I like the proposal, but I want to hear the legal department's opinion too.
Reflexivity and lexical integrity
The particle се is obligatory and does not mean that the subject literally pleases itself. Removing it produces the wrong verb frame. Conversely, do not add an accusative object: the appealing entity is nominative.
Micro-dialogue
„Како ти се свидео нови стан?“ — „Распоред соба ми се допао, али ми се нису свидели прозори.“ — „Значи, још ћеш тражити?“ — „Да, док ми се не свиде и распоред и осветљење.“
‘How did you like the new flat?’ — ‘I liked the room layout, but I didn't like the windows.’ — ‘So you'll keep looking?’ — ‘Yes, until I like both the layout and the lighting.’
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Let the stimulus control agreement
Translate I like this lamp, I like these lamps, and They liked this lamp. Underline the nominative subject and choose свиђа/свиђају or the agreeing past form.
Task 2: First reaction or established love?
Describe a song that impressed you on first hearing with свидети се, then say that you now love it with волети. Replace yourself with dative ми in the first sentence and nominative ја in the second.
Common Mistakes
❌ Ја свиђам нови дизајн.
Incorrect English-based frame — the design must be the subject and the experiencer dative.
✅ Нови дизајн ми се свиђа.
I like the new design.
❌ Свиђа нам се ови прозори.
Incorrect agreement — plural ови прозори requires свиђају.
✅ Свиђају нам се ови прозори.
We like these windows.
❌ Мене се свидела представа.
Incorrect experiencer case — use dative мени/ми.
✅ Мени се свидела представа, а њему није.
I liked the play, but he didn't.
❌ Филм ми се је свидео после другог гледања.
Incorrect clitic cluster — third-person singular auxiliary је is omitted beside reflexive се.
✅ Филм ми се свидео после другог гледања.
I liked the film after watching it a second time.
❌ Свидела сам се нова песма.
Incorrect agreement and role assignment — песма is the feminine subject; the experiencer is dative.
✅ Свидела ми се нова песма.
I liked the new song.
