The Two Faces of trebati

Serbian требати has two grammatical structures. Modal треба means “should/need to” and is normally impersonal in careful standard Serbian: треба да идем. Lexical требати means “be needed”: the needed thing is nominative and controls agreement, while the person who needs it is dative—треба ми карта, требају ми карте.

Before another action, standard Serbian normally keeps требати impersonal. The following finite verb identifies the actor.

MeaningStandard frame
I should goтреба да идем
you should goтреба да идеш
she should goтреба да иде
we should goтреба да идемо
they should goтреба да иду

Треба да провериш број рачуна пре уплате.

You should check the account number before making the payment.

Сви треба да понесу личну карту.

Everyone should bring identification.

The initial noun phrase can identify the actor, but треба itself still does not agree: они треба да дођу, not careful-standard они требају да дођу.

Past, future, and conditional advice are also impersonal:

FormExample
pastтребало је да дођем
futureтребаће да дођем
conditionalтребало би да дођем

Требало је да позовемо власника чим смо приметили квар.

We should have called the owner as soon as we noticed the fault.

Требало би да разговараш с њом пре него што одлучиш.

You should talk to her before you decide.

Personal modal forms such as требам да идем and требали смо да дођемо are widespread in colloquial and regional usage. In a simple neutral clause, careful contemporary Serbian generally prefers the impersonal forms above. This is a strong default, not an absolute ban: personal agreement is accepted where the syntax—especially inside a relative clause—would otherwise connect a nominative relative pronoun awkwardly to an impersonal predicate.

Стигли су сви који су требали да се пријаве.

Everyone who was supposed to register arrived. (personal agreement is appropriate inside this relative clause)

💡
With modal треба, look after да for the actor: треба да идем/идеш/иде. Changing the person changes the subordinate verb, not треба.

General advice with an infinitive

Треба + infinitive gives an agentless instruction or recommendation. It is standard and common in notices, recipes, and formal guidance.

Пре употребе треба добро протрести боцу.

The bottle should be shaken well before use.

When a specific actor matters, да + present is clearer: треба да протресеш. Both the infinitive and да + present are valid Serbian; they organize subject reference differently.

Lexical требати: a thing is needed

In the lexical construction, the needed item is the grammatical subject. The experiencer uses dative ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им.

Needed subjectVerbExperiencer
једна столицатребанам
две столицетребајунам
још временатребами
титребашми

Треба ми још мало времена да завршим понуду.

I need a little more time to finish the proposal.

Требају нам три волонтера за суботњу радионицу.

We need three volunteers for Saturday's workshop.

Требаш ми сутра ујутру; не могу сама да померим ормар.

I need you tomorrow morning; I can't move the wardrobe by myself. (female speaker)

The last sentence has genuine personal agreement: nominative ти is what/person is needed, so требаш is correct. This is fundamentally different from nonstandard modal ти требаш да идеш, where “you” is only the actor of going.

Past lexical требати agrees through the l-participle:

Та потврда ми је требала приликом пријаве.

I needed that certificate when applying.

Ти документи нам нису требали на граници.

We did not need those documents at the border.

Feminine потврда triggers требала; masculine plural документи triggers требали. The dative experiencer does not control agreement.

Negation can mean advice or absence of need

Modal не треба да... can mean “should not” and, depending on context, “need not.” If avoiding ambiguity matters, use не би требало да for advice against an action and не мораш да for absence of necessity.

Не би требало да возиш ако си уморан.

You shouldn't drive if you are tired. (addressing a man)

Не мораш да долазиш сутра; посао је завршен.

You don't need to come tomorrow; the work is finished.

Lexical negation says that an item is not needed:

Не треба ми рачун, хвала.

I don't need the receipt, thank you.

Questions and clitics

Modal questions keep impersonal треба:

Да ли треба да резервишемо сто унапред?

Should we reserve a table in advance?

Lexical questions ask whether something is needed:

Да ли ти треба пуњач или си понео свој?

Do you need a charger, or did you bring your own? (addressing a man)

Dative clitics follow the ordinary second-position rule: Мени треба... uses a full stressed pronoun for contrast; neutral Треба ми... lets the verb host ми. See Impersonal Sentences for the wider pattern.

Aspect and complement choice

Modal треба does not choose aspect. Треба да читаш recommends an activity or habit; треба да прочиташ requires reaching the endpoint.

Треба да читаш више ако желиш богатији речник.

You should read more if you want a richer vocabulary.

Треба да прочиташ уговор пре потписивања.

You need to read the contract through before signing.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Find the grammatical subject

Analyze Треба ми карта, Требају ми карте, and Треба да купим карте. Identify the nominative subject, dative experiencer, and actor in each construction.

Task 2: Move through time

Express “we should call,” “we should have called,” and “we ought to call.” Keep требати impersonal and show where first-person plural is marked.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ја требам да завршим извештај данас.

Avoid this personal modal form in a simple neutral careful-standard clause — use impersonal треба before another action.

✅ Треба да завршим извештај данас.

I should finish the report today.

❌ Ми смо требали да вас позовемо.

Avoid personal agreement here in neutral careful-standard phrasing — past modal obligation normally uses impersonal требало је.

✅ Требало је да вас позовемо.

We should have called you.

❌ Треба ми две карте за вечерашњу представу.

Incorrect — plural две карте controls plural требају.

✅ Требају ми две карте за вечерашњу представу.

I need two tickets for tonight's performance.

❌ Мене треба нови лаптоп.

Incorrect — the experiencer is dative мени, not accusative мене.

✅ Мени треба нови лаптоп, а њему нови телефон.

I need a new laptop, and he needs a new phone.

❌ Та документа ми је требала јуче.

Incorrect — plural neuter документа requires plural auxiliary су and participle требала.

✅ Та документа су ми требала јуче.

I needed those documents yesterday.

Key Takeaways

  • Modal треба is impersonal in careful Serbian; person appears in да + present.
  • Lexical требати agrees with the needed subject, while the experiencer is dative.
  • Требаш ми is standard “I need you”; modal требаш да... is colloquial/nonstandard in careful usage.
  • Both aspect and negation change meaning independently of the personal/impersonal split.
