Требати has two constructional faces. Modal треба means that an action should or needs to happen and is safest for learners in the impersonal pattern треба да + present. Lexical требати means “be needed”: the needed item is the grammatical subject and agrees with the verb, while the person who needs it is dative.
The Two Frames at a Glance
| Meaning | Core frame | Where person/number appears |
|---|---|---|
| should, need to | треба да + present | on the verb after да |
| general necessity | треба + infinitive | no specific actor |
| a thing/person is needed | needed subject + требати + dative experiencer | треба/требају agrees with the needed subject |
Треба да завршимо проверу пре него што објавимо резултате.
We need to finish the review before we publish the results.
За ову проверу нам треба још један искусан уредник.
We need one more experienced editor for this review.
In the first sentence, first-person plural is marked by завршимо; impersonal треба does not agree. In the second, singular nominative уредник is the needed subject, while нам identifies the people who need him.
Modal треба: Careful Learner and Editorial Default
For a specific actor, careful contemporary Serbian readily uses invariant треба plus a finite да clause. The subordinate present carries person and number.
| Actor | Neutral careful-standard frame |
|---|---|
| I | треба да позовем |
| you | треба да позовеш |
| she | треба да позове |
| we | треба да позовемо |
| they | треба да позову |
Треба да позовеш амбуланту ако температура поново порасте.
You should call the clinic if the temperature rises again.
Сви запослени треба да промене лозинку до краја недеље.
All employees need to change their password by the end of the week.
An expressed subject may stand before invariant треба, as in сви запослени треба да.... The safest production rule is still to let the verb after да identify the actor.
Past, future, and conditional advice also have impersonal defaults:
| Meaning | Form |
|---|---|
| should have / was supposed to | требало је да... |
| will need to | требаће да... |
| should / ought to, softened advice | требало би да... |
Требало је да сачувам потврду, али сам је случајно обрисао.
I should have saved the confirmation, but I accidentally deleted it. (male speaker)
Следеће године требаће да обновимо дозволу за рад.
Next year we will need to renew the work permit.
Требало би да оставите више времена за преседање.
You should allow more time for the connection. (formal or plural)
Modal требати has no ordinary imperative. Serbian gives advice with треба / требало би да... or a direct imperative of the action verb; требај! is not a neutral modal command.
Legitimate Personal Modal Agreement
Personal modal forms—требам да, требају да, требали су да—are widespread across the BCMS area and occur in Serbian speech and writing. Editorial traditions differ. In a simple learner sentence, Serbian reference works commonly prefer треба да идем and требало је да идемо, and this guide follows that default.
That default is not an honest reason to erase every personal form. When a nominative subject or relative pronoun precedes the modal, personal agreement can make the syntactic relationship explicit and is accepted in structures such as relative clauses.
Стигли су сви преводиоци који су требали да учествују у јутарњој седници.
All the translators who were supposed to take part in the morning session arrived.
Here који is nominative plural and links naturally to су требали. An editor committed to an impersonal structure can recast the sentence—Требало је да сви преводиоци учествују...—but simply deleting agreement inside the original relative clause produces a less coherent analysis.
Personal modal требам да... is especially ordinary in Croatian and occurs in Bosnian, Montenegrin, and regional/informal Serbian usage. These are differences in standardization and usage, not rankings of one identity or standard over another.
Agentless треба + Infinitive
An infinitive presents a general recommendation without naming the actor. This is standard and common in instructions, public notices, recipes, and formal guidance.
Пре укључивања уређаја треба проверити да ли је кабл оштећен.
Before switching on the device, one should check whether the cable is damaged.
For a specific addressee, треба да провериш / проверите is clearer. Both the infinitive and да + present are standard; they differ in whether the actor is grammatically expressed.
Lexical требати: “Be Needed”
When an entity is needed, it controls agreement. The experiencer is dative: ми, ти, му, јој, нам, вам, им.
The lexical verb has the present stem треба-: требам, требаш, треба, требамо, требате, требају. Its complete l-participle is требао, требала, требало; требали, требале, требала (masculine, feminine, and neuter singular; then plural), and Future I is требаћу, требаћеш, требаће, требаћемо, требаћете, требаће. The neutral lexical frame has no useful imperative: Serbian does not normally command someone or something to “be needed.”
За пријаву ми треба оверена копија пасоша.
I need a certified copy of my passport for the application.
За радионицу нам требају маказе, лепак и дебљи папир.
We need scissors, glue, and thicker paper for the workshop.
Singular копија licenses треба; the coordinated plural list licenses требају. A person can also be the needed subject.
Да ли вам требам на састанку или могу да радим од куће?
Do you need me at the meeting, or can I work from home?
Here first-person требам is fully motivated: “I” am the person needed, while вам means “by you / to you.” This is not the disputed modal pattern ја требам да идем.
Past lexical forms agree through the l-participle.
Додатна дозвола нам је требала само за први део пројекта.
We needed the additional permit only for the first part of the project.
Ти алати нам више нису требали, па смо их вратили мајстору.
We no longer needed those tools, so we returned them to the tradesman.
The dative experiencer never controls this agreement: feminine дозвола gives требала, masculine plural алати gives требали.
Aspect and затребати
Both modal and lexical требати are imperfective/stative and lack a simple perfective partner meaning “finish needing.” Perfective затребати means “come to be needed” or “turn out to need,” so it adds an onset rather than merely completing the same state.
Ако ти затреба помоћ око селидбе, позови ме без устручавања.
If you end up needing help with the move, call me without hesitation.
The modal does not determine the aspect of its complement. Треба да читаш recommends an activity or habit; треба да прочиташ requires a bounded result. The dedicated aspect after modals page develops that contrast.
Negation and Potential Ambiguity
Не треба да... often means “should not,” but context can also allow “need not.” Use не би требало да... for clear advice against an action and не мораш да... for absence of necessity.
Не би требало да шаљеш број картице обичном електронском поштом.
You should not send your card number by ordinary email.
Не мораш да доносиш пешкир; добићеш га на рецепцији.
You don’t need to bring a towel; you’ll get one at reception.
Lexical negation simply denies need: Не треба ми кеса, хвала “I don’t need a bag, thank you.”
Clitics
Lexical dative clitics follow the early-placement rule: Треба ми..., while a full form moves for contrast: Мени треба..., њему не треба.... In a modal да clause, object clitics belong immediately after да.
Треба да му их пошаљете пре подне, док је још у канцеларији.
You should send them to him before noon, while he is still in the office. (formal or plural)
In да му их пошаљете, dative му precedes accusative их. Modal треба remains outside that subordinate cluster.
Micro-dialogue
„Шта ти треба за презентацију?“ — „Требају ми пројектор и два кабла.“ — „Да ли треба да их донесем до десет?“ — „Не мораш; требаће ми тек после ручка.“
‘What do you need for the presentation?’ — ‘I need a projector and two cables.’ — ‘Should I bring them by ten?’ — ‘You don’t have to; I won’t need them until after lunch.’
The dialogue moves between lexical need with dative ти/ми, impersonal modal треба да, and future lexical требаће ми.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Find the controller
Analyze “I need one battery,” “I need three batteries,” and “I should buy batteries.” Identify the nominative needed item, dative experiencer, or actor in the да clause, and choose треба/требају accordingly.
Task 2: Move modal advice through time
Express “we should call,” “we should have called,” “we will need to call,” and softened “we ought to call.” Keep the modal impersonal and mark first-person plural only in the complement.
Common Mistakes
❌ Требају да пошаљемо коначну верзију данас.
Incorrect for ‘we should send’ in the neutral careful-standard pattern — keep треба impersonal; first-person plural belongs on пошаљемо.
✅ Треба да пошаљемо коначну верзију данас.
We should send the final version today.
❌ Треба ми нове батерије за диктафон.
Incorrect lexical agreement — plural батерије requires требају.
✅ Требају ми нове батерије за диктафон.
I need new batteries for the voice recorder.
❌ Мене треба потврда о уплати.
Incorrect — the experiencer is dative мени, not accusative мене.
✅ Мени треба потврда о уплати, а њој само број рачуна.
I need proof of payment, while she only needs the account number.
❌ Требало смо да понесемо заштитне рукавице.
Incorrect hybrid — impersonal past is требало је, not требало смо.
✅ Требало је да понесемо заштитне рукавице.
We should have brought protective gloves.
