Mistake: Wrong Case After Verbs

English usually lets a verb take a direct object and then supplies a preposition only when one is needed: help someone, believe someone, be afraid of something. Serbian instead stores a government frame with the verb itself. That frame may require the dative, genitive, or instrumental even where English suggests a direct object or a prepositional phrase.

This is therefore not an error that endings alone can solve. You need to learn помоћи некоме, сећати се нечега, and бавити се нечим as complete lexical units. The broader system is introduced on the verb-government overview; here the goal is to diagnose and repair the most persistent case errors.

First diagnostic: ask what the verb licenses

A Serbian verb does not choose its complement case by translating the English preposition. Start from the Serbian infinitive, then retrieve its frame:

FrameHigh-frequency verbsQuestion
dativeпомоћи, веровати, сметати, противити секоме? чему?
genitiveсећати се, бојати се, стидети се, чувати секога? чега?
instrumentalбавити се, управљати, располагати, поносити секиме? чиме?

The question is a check, not a rule that predicts the frame. Nothing about the meaning of remember logically forces the genitive. Government is partly arbitrary, so the honest solution is to record the case with every new verb.

💡
Write vocabulary as a frame: веровати + dat., сећати се + gen., управљати + instr.. An isolated infinitive hides the information most likely to cause an error.

Pattern 1: English direct object → Serbian dative

English has no case ending in help my neighbor or believe your colleague. Learners therefore copy the direct-object pattern and use the accusative. With these Serbian verbs, that is ungrammatical in the intended meaning.

❌ Комшија је помогао стару госпођу да унесе кесе.

Incorrect — помоћи requires a dative recipient, not the accusative copied from English “help someone.”

✅ Комшија је помогао старој госпођи да унесе кесе.

The neighbor helped the elderly lady carry in her bags.

❌ Не верујем тог човека кад обећава брзу зараду.

Incorrect — веровати takes the dative; the English direct object has triggered an accusative form.

✅ Не верујем том човеку кад обећава брзу зараду.

I don't believe that man when he promises quick profits.

The same dative frame appears with сметати “bother,” прићи “approach,” противити се “oppose,” and надати се “hope for.” English object to a proposal may tempt you to preserve to as a Serbian preposition, but Serbian marks the target directly with the dative.

❌ Већина станара се противи на новом правилу.

Incorrect — противити се governs a bare dative; на is an English-driven addition.

✅ Већина станара се противи новом правилу.

Most residents oppose the new rule.

Do not overgeneralize. Слушати некога and чекати некога take the accusative even though English says listen to someone and wait for someone. The Serbian verb, not the English preposition, decides.

Pattern 2: English of/about → Serbian bare genitive

Several reflexive verbs govern a genitive complement without a preposition. English speakers commonly add о because English says think about or remember about, or use an accusative because remember is transitive.

❌ Још се сећам наш први стан и старог балкона.

Incorrect — сећати се governs the genitive; наш први стан is accusative here.

✅ Још се сећам нашег првог стана и старог балкона.

I still remember our first apartment and its old balcony.

❌ Наш млађи пас се плаши од грмљавине и скрива се испод стола.

Nonstandard in careful Serbian for this meaning — the English “afraid of” has been translated as од; плашити се normally takes a bare genitive.

✅ Наш млађи пас се плаши грмљавине и скрива се испод стола.

Our younger dog is afraid of thunder and hides under the table.

The genitive is not simply “the fear case.” Compare плашити некога “frighten someone,” which is transitive and takes the accusative. Removing се changes the verb’s participant structure.

Та бука плаши бебу, али се њена сестра не плаши грмљавине.

That noise frightens the baby, but her sister isn't afraid of thunder.

Likewise, памтити нешто takes the accusative, whereas сећати се нечега takes the genitive. Both can translate remember, but they are different lexical frames, not freely interchangeable endings.

Pattern 3: English with/of → Serbian bare instrumental

The instrumental can encode the entity controlled, used, or treated as a field of activity. With бавити се, управљати, руководити, располагати, and поносити се, ordinary standard Serbian uses a bare instrumental. English prepositions often lure learners into adding са.

❌ Моја сестра се већ годинама бави са заштитом птица.

Incorrect — бавити се takes a bare instrumental; са incorrectly copies English “deal with.”

✅ Моја сестра се већ годинама бави заштитом птица.

My sister has worked in bird conservation for years.

❌ Ко сада управља ову малу галерију?

Incorrect — управљати governs the instrumental, not an English-style direct object.

✅ Ко сада управља овом малом галеријом?

Who runs this small gallery now?

Adding са is not always word salad; it can activate the ordinary accompaniment meaning of са + instrumental. That is why ради са младим лекарима means “works with young doctors,” while руководи младим лекарима means “manages the young doctors.” The first describes collaboration; the second assigns authority.

Ивана ради са новим тимом, а Марко руководи тимом до краја пројекта.

Ivana works with the new team, while Marko manages the team until the project ends.

Near-synonyms do not inherit one another’s case

Translation equivalents frequently package the same idea with different government. Сличан takes the dative, but личити на takes на + accusative. Поносити се takes the instrumental, while бити поносан на takes на + accusative.

❌ Њен рукопис је сличан на очев рукопис.

Incorrect blend — сличан requires the dative, while на belongs to личити на.

✅ Њен рукопис је сличан очевом рукопису.

Her handwriting is similar to her father's handwriting.

Њен рукопис личи на очев рукопис.

Her handwriting resembles her father's handwriting.

This kind of blend is especially revealing: every piece exists in Serbian, but pieces from two different frames have been combined. Editing means choosing one construction and completing it consistently.

Common Mistakes

Adding a preposition because English has one

❌ Присуствовали смо на отварању изложбе.

Incorrect in careful standard Serbian — English “be present at” has supplied на; присуствовати takes a bare dative.

✅ Присуствовали смо отварању изложбе.

We attended the exhibition opening.

Treating every person affected as an accusative object

❌ Тај мирис смета моју колегиницу.

Incorrect — сметати assigns the affected person the dative, not the accusative.

✅ Тај мирис смета мојој колегиници.

That smell bothers my colleague.

Keeping the case but losing required се

❌ Поносим успехом целе екипе.

Incorrect — the verb is поносити се; the reflexive particle is part of the lexical frame.

✅ Поносим се успехом целе екипе.

I'm proud of the whole team's success.

Assuming a grammatical alternative means the same thing

Разговарао сам с директорком о кашњењу.

I spoke with the director about the delay.

Разговарао сам о директорки због кашњења.

I spoke about the director because of the delay.

Both are grammatical, but с директорком identifies the conversation partner and о директорки its topic. A case change can change the participant role rather than merely produce “bad grammar.”

Practice

1. Repair the frame

Correct the governed complement. More than an ending may need to change.

  1. Не верујем ову рекламу.
  2. Она се бави са превођењем стручних текстова.
  3. Нисам се сетио на његов рођендан.
  4. Пришли смо до службеника и показали карту.

Suggested answers: Не верујем овој реклами.; Она се бави превођењем стручних текстова.; Нисам се сетио његовог рођендана.; Пришли смо службенику и показали карту.

2. Choose the intended frame

Translate, choosing between the constructions in parentheses.

  1. “This photograph resembles an old postcard.” (сличан / личити на)
  2. “The interns work with the editor, but she manages the project.” (радити са / управљати)
  3. “I remember that address, but I don't remember the building number.” (памтити / сећати се)

Possible answers: Ова фотографија личи на стару разгледницу.; Приправници раде са уредницом, али она управља пројектом.; Памтим ту адресу, али се не сећам броја зграде.

Self-editing checklist

  • Have I learned the Serbian verb together with its case and any required се?
  • Did an English direct object tempt me into the accusative?
  • Did an English preposition make me add на, о, од, or са where Serbian uses a bare case?
  • Am I blending two near-synonymous frames, such as сличан нечему and личити на нешто?
  • If my alternative is grammatical, does it assign a different role—companion, topic, target, or means?
💡
When a sentence feels “almost right,” underline the verb and its complement together. Government errors are easiest to see as a broken verb phrase, not as an isolated bad noun ending.

Key Takeaways

  • Learn every verb together with its governed case and any required се.
  • English direct objects and prepositions do not predict Serbian government.
  • A different case may create a different participant role rather than meaningless Serbian.
