Technology and the Internet | Serbian Grammar

Digital Serbian combines international vocabulary with fully Serbian grammar. You may open фајл or датотеку, but both become accusative objects; you are на интернету, на сајту, and у апликацији; and once a file is known, you say пошаљи ми га, with the dative clitic before the accusative one. Learning the frame around a word is more useful than memorizing an isolated translation.

This page gives neutral current usage and labels widespread informal alternatives. Interfaces vary: one service may use пријавите се, another улогујте се. That variation does not change the underlying cases, aspect, or clitic placement.

Core devices and digital nouns

Loanwords still decline. Фајл has accusative фајл and instrumental фајлом; апликација has accusative апликацију and locative апликацији. Writing the word in Latin script does not remove it from Serbian syntax.

Digital places use на and у conventionally

Serbian usually says на интернету, на мрежи, на сајту, на платформи, but у апликацији, у програму, у документу, у поруци. These are conventional viewpoints, not a direct map of English on/in.

Образац је на сајту, а упутство се налази у мобилној апликацији.

The form is on the website, and the instructions are in the mobile app.

На интернету сам нашао стару верзију програма, али је нисам инсталирао.

I found an old version of the program online, but I didn't install it. (male speaker)

When the phrase expresses entry or a newly established digital relation, accusative appears: поставити фотографију на сајт, унети податке у образац, пријавити се на налог. Static location uses locative: фотографија је на сајту, подаци су у обрасцу.

Унесите адресу у поље, а затим поставите документ на платформу.

Enter the address in the field, and then upload the document to the platform. (formal or plural instruction)

Do not choose accusative merely because an action is dynamic. Choose it when the action creates a destination relation: ставити у фасциклу. Editing something already у документу still uses locative for the setting.

Actions come in aspectual networks

Digital instructions often contrast a process or repeated action with a completed result.

Преузети is the neutral interface verb for “download.” Скинути is very widespread (informal) with the same digital meaning, but also has several physical senses. Отпремити is a standard technical verb for “upload”; ordinary users also say поставити or послати, depending on destination. No single English–Serbian pair covers every interface.

The English verb save also divides: digital сачувати документ, but спасти/спасити човека means rescue a person. The similarity of the English word is not a Serbian semantic connection.

Користити and the thing used

The most direct frame is користити + accusative: користити апликацију, рачунар, претраживач. The reflexive alternative користити се + instrumental is also standard: користити се апликацијом. Do not mix the two frames.

За видео-позиве користимо програм који ради и на телефону.

For video calls, we use a program that also works on a phone.

У библиотеци се можете бесплатно користити јавним рачунарима.

At the library, you can use the public computers free of charge. (formal or plural addressee)

The first object is accusative; the second is instrumental without са. See користити (се) for the full contrast.

Accounts, signing in, and reflexive се

Neutral interface language uses пријавити се “sign/log in” and одјавити се “sign/log out.” Улоговати се/излоговати се are widespread (informal/technical) loan formations. The reflexive clitic is compulsory in these senses.

Не могу да се пријавим на налог јер сам заборавила лозинку.

I can't sign in to the account because I forgot my password. (female speaker)

Одјавите се са заједничког рачунара када завршите.

Sign out of the shared computer when you're finished. (formal or plural instruction)

Notice the source-like са + genitive in одјавити се са налога/са рачунара. Interface language is not always spatial in a literal sense, but it extends productive Serbian preposition patterns.

Sending, receiving, and clitics

Послати некоме нешто has a dative recipient and an accusative item. When both are pronouns, the neutral order is dative before accusative: ми га, ти је, нам их.

Пошаљи ми их у поруци, јер не могу да отворим прилог у мејлу.

Send them to me in a message because I can't open the email attachment. (informal singular)

Стигао ми је код за потврду, али га је систем већ поништио.

I received a verification code, but the system has already invalidated it.

Имејл and мејл are both current; електронска пошта is explicit and more formal. In an actual address, preserve its Latin characters, digits, and symbols. That practical exception does not turn ordinary Serbian prose into transliteration.

Online tone and messaging

Short messages often omit material recoverable from context, but clitics still obey Serbian placement. Шаљем ти касније is natural when “it” is obvious; Послаћу касније focuses on completion. In professional messaging, a greeting and a complete request prevent a terse imperative from sounding hostile.

Здраво, можеш ли да ми пошаљеш записник кад будеш имао времена?

Hi, could you send me the minutes when you have time? (informal singular, male addressee)

Emoji, Latin script, and omitted diacritics occur in casual digital writing, but forms such as c, s, dj are not correct Serbian Latin substitutes for č/ć, š, đ in careful writing. This guide retains standard Cyrillic and full orthography.

Situational dialogue

— Не могу да отворим документ који си послала. — Покушај да преузмеш нову верзију са платформе. — Да ли морам поново да се пријавим? — Да. Ако си заборавио лозинку, пошаљи захтев за нову.

— I can't open the document you sent. — Try downloading the new version from the platform. — Do I have to sign in again? — Yes. If you've forgotten your password, send a request for a new one. (male then female speakers)

The opening uses modal не могу да отворим + accusative for technical inability. This is clearer than не отвара ми се, which can also mean “I do not feel like opening it.” The dialogue then contrasts completed преузмеш/пошаљи with a state expressed by си заборавио.

Practice

Task 1: Choose the digital place

Describe a form on a website, information inside the form, and a document uploaded to a platform. Decide between на + locative, у + locative, and destination accusative.

Task 2: Replace nouns with clitics

Start with Пошаљи Ани фотографије. Replace Ани and фотографије with clitics, then put the sentence in the perfect with a masculine speaker.

Common Mistakes

Mixing the two користити frames

❌ Користим са новом апликацијом за превод.

Incorrect—transitive користити takes accusative without са; reflexive користити се takes bare instrumental.

✅ Користим нову апликацију за превод.

I use a new translation app.

❌ Не могу да пријавим на свој налог.

Incorrect for ‘sign in’—the verb is reflexive пријавити се.

✅ Не могу да се пријавим на свој налог.

I can't sign in to my account.

Using “rescue” for digital “save”

❌ Спаси документ пре затварања програма.

Incorrect lexical choice—спасти/спасити means rescue; a digital file is сачувати.

✅ Сачувај документ пре затварања програма.

Save the document before closing the program. (informal singular)

Reversing recipient and object clitics

❌ Пошаљи га ми преко апликације.

Incorrect neutral cluster order—the dative recipient ми comes before accusative га.

✅ Пошаљи ми га преко апликације.
