Workplace Serbian depends on more than specialized vocabulary. A colleague is у канцеларији but goes у канцеларију; people раде на пројекту, разговарају о року, and ask Можете ли да ми пошаљете документ? The cases, aspect, clitics, and degree of directness inside these phrases are reusable well beyond the office.
This page covers current neutral professional usage. Actual offices differ in culture: colleagues may move quickly to informal ти, while clients and senior contacts may remain ви. Follow the relationship rather than assuming that every workplace is either uniformly formal or uniformly casual.
Where work happens: learn three-part place sets
Office locations use conventional destination–location–source patterns. The most useful sets are:
| Destination | Location | Source |
|---|---|---|
| у канцеларију | у канцеларији | из канцеларије |
| на посао | на послу | с посла |
| на састанак | на састанку | са састанка |
| у салу за састанке | у сали за састанке | из сале за састанке |
Милица је у канцеларији, али за десет минута иде на састанак код директора.
Milica is in the office, but in ten minutes she's going to a meeting with the director.
Враћам се са састанка у пола три, па можемо тада да прегледамо уговор.
I'll be back from the meeting at half past two, so we can review the contract then.
Accusative after у/на establishes a destination; locative describes an existing setting. Source normally reverses у with из, and на with са. The choice of у or на itself is conventional, so store the complete set. The fuller system appears in location and direction with у/на.
Projects, topics, and responsibilities
Work nouns select different prepositions. Радити на + locative names a project or task in progress; разговарати о + locative names a topic; бити задужен/задужена за + accusative assigns responsibility.
Радимо на новој верзији сајта, а Јелена је задужена за проверу садржаја.
We're working on the new version of the website, and Jelena is responsible for checking the content.
На сутрашњем састанку разговараћемо о буџету и роковима за испоруку.
At tomorrow's meeting we'll discuss the budget and delivery deadlines.
The English noun work tempts learners to overuse рад or радити. Serbian usually доноси одлуку, поставља питање, води састанак, пише извештај, and прави план. These are collocations, not meanings predictable from one universal verb.
Пре него што донесемо коначну одлуку, треба да проверимо све понуде.
Before we make a final decision, we need to check all the offers.
Scheduling and deadlines
Office time phrases distinguish the event time, the scheduling target, and the deadline. Састанак је у среду says when it takes place; заказали смо га за среду presents Wednesday as the scheduled slot; до среде sets an inclusive practical deadline determined by context.
Померили смо презентацију за четвртак јер клијент у среду није слободан.
We moved the presentation to Thursday because the client isn't available on Wednesday.
Можете ли да завршите извештај до петка у подне?
Could you finish the report by noon on Friday? (polite or plural addressee)
Common verbs package different outcomes: заказати “schedule,” померити “reschedule/move,” одложити “postpone,” and отказати “cancel.” Do not use променити as a catch-all when the direction of the change matters.
Aspect also makes the deadline meaningful. Imperfective писати/проверавати/слати presents ongoing or repeated work; perfective написати/проверити/послати presents the deliverable as completed.
Још проверавам табеле, али ћу вам коначну верзију послати до краја дана.
I'm still checking the tables, but I'll send you the final version by the end of the day.
Requests that sound professional
A bare imperative can be efficient among close colleagues, but it may sound abrupt when the request is substantial or the relationship is formal. Можеш ли/Можете ли да..., Молим те/вас да..., and conditional Да ли бисте могли да... create increasingly careful requests.
| Form | Typical setting |
|---|---|
| Пошаљи ми табелу. | direct, informal, routine |
| Можеш ли да ми пошаљеш табелу? | informal, cooperative |
| Можете ли да ми пошаљете табелу? | neutral polite or plural |
| Да ли бисте могли да ми пошаљете табелу? | careful/formal request |
Да ли бисте могли да нам пошаљете потписан примерак уговора?
Could you send us a signed copy of the contract? (formal)
Пошаљи ми га кад га директор потпише, не мораш раније.
Send it to me when the director signs it; you don't need to do it earlier. (informal singular)
In пошаљи ми га, dative ми precedes accusative га in the clitic cluster. Serbian normally avoids repeating the noun once both speakers know the document, but the pronouns cannot be placed by English word order.
Professional email: openings, attachments, and closings
Neutral business email is concise. An opening may be Поштована госпођо Петровић, / Поштовани господине Јовановићу, (formal), with the title or name in vocative. Поштовани, addresses an organization or unknown team. Among established colleagues, Здраво, Ана, is ordinary (informal) professional usage.
Useful body phrases reveal productive cases:
| Phrase | Grammar inside it |
|---|---|
| У прилогу вам шаљем... | у + locative; dative recipient |
| Хвала вам на одговору. | dative person; на + locative reason |
| Молим вас за потврду пријема. | accusative вас; за + accusative request |
| Стојим вам на располагању. | dative person; на + locative |
Поштована госпођо Илић, у прилогу Вам шаљем исправљену понуду. Молим Вас да потврдите пријем.
Dear Ms Ilić, attached please find the corrected offer. Please confirm receipt. (formal written correspondence)
Capital Вам/Вас is an optional courtesy convention when writing to one respected person. Lowercase is grammatically correct; to several recipients, use lowercase plural вам/вас. Срдачан поздрав is a neutral professional closing, while С поштовањем is more formal. Literal English Најбоље is not a normal email closing meaning Best.
Reporting problems without assigning blame
Professional Serbian often uses an impersonal or result-focused sentence when the cause is unknown or less important than the remedy: дошло је до грешке, фајл се не отвара, рок није испоштован. This can be tactful, but it should not hide responsibility when clarity requires an agent.
Изгледа да се приложена датотека не отвара; можете ли да пошаљете нову копију?
It seems the attached file won't open; could you send a new copy?
Нисмо испоштовали договорени рок и послаћемо исправљен извештај сутра до десет.
We missed the agreed deadline, and we'll send the corrected report by ten tomorrow.
Situational dialogue
— Имаш ли минут? Клијент тражи нову процену трошкова до сутра. — Имам, али још чекам податке из продаје. — Послаћу ти их чим стигну. Можеш ли онда да ажурираш табелу? — Могу, па ћу ти послати нацрт до краја дана.
— Do you have a minute? The client wants a new cost estimate by tomorrow. — I do, but I'm still waiting for the sales data. — I'll send you the data as soon as they arrive. Can you update the table then? — Yes, and I'll send you a draft by the end of the day. (informal colleagues)
The exchange uses informal singular forms because the colleagues have an established ти relationship. Dative ти marks the recipient, из + genitive identifies the organizational source, and perfective послати/ажурирати frame promised results.
Practice
Task 1: Move through the office
Describe going from the office to a meeting and returning from the meeting to the office. Use the destination, location, and source forms from the table.
Task 2: Rewrite a direct request
Turn Пошаљи ми уговор данас into an informal cooperative request, a neutral ви request, and a careful formal request. Keep ми before the accusative object pronoun if you replace уговор with га.
Common Mistakes
Confusing location and destination
❌ Цео тим је данас у састанак.
Incorrect—the team is at an existing setting, so на takes locative састанку.
✅ Цео тим је данас на састанку са клијентом.
The whole team is in a meeting with the client today.
Copying English work on with the wrong case
❌ Радимо на нови пројекат за банку.
Incorrect—радити на governs the locative for a project: новом пројекту.
✅ Радимо на новом пројекту за банку.
We're working on a new project for a bank.
Misordering two pronoun clitics
❌ Пошаљите га ми после састанка.
Incorrect neutral clitic order—the dative clitic ми precedes accusative га in the early cluster.
✅ Пошаљите ми га после састанка.
Send it to me after the meeting. (formal or plural addressee)
Translating an English email closing literally
❌ Најбоље, Марко
Unnatural as a literal business-email rendering of English ‘Best.’
✅ Срдачан поздрав, Марко
Kind regards, Marko.
Using a bare command with an unfamiliar client
✅ Потпиши ово и врати ми данас, молим те.
Sign this and return it to me today, please. (direct but natural between close colleagues)
✅ Молим Вас да потписан документ вратите до краја дана.
Please return the signed document by the end of the day. (formal written request)
Key Takeaways
- Store workplace destinations, locations, and sources as sets: на састанак — на састанку — са састанка.
- Use на + locative for work on a project, о + locative for a discussion topic, and за + accusative for responsibility.
- Perfective verbs naturally present promised completed deliverables.
- Adjust requests through ти/ви, question forms, the conditional, and молим, not by translating please mechanically.
- Professional email phrases contain normal productive case and clitic patterns; they are not unanalyzable formulas.
