Real Serbian sentences rarely isolate one case at a time. A person may be nominative as the subject, accusative as the object, dative as the recipient, and instrumental after са—sometimes within two adjacent clauses. The same referent changes form because each mention has a new grammatical role.
The practical skill is therefore not “remember which ending belongs to this word,” but “recalculate the whole phrase from its current governor and meaning.” Cases package roles and relations; they do not permanently belong to a person, place, or object.
One Referent Through the Seven Cases
The table tracks one masculine singular person and one feminine plural group. It also displays major syncretisms: masculine G = A, feminine plural N = A = V, and plural D = I = L.
| Case | Masculine singular | Feminine plural | Typical clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| nominative | млади професор Марко | нове колегинице | subject or naming |
| genitive | младог професора Марка | нових колегиница | без, од, из; possession/quantity |
| dative | младом професору Марку | новим колегиницама | recipient; verbs such as помоћи |
| accusative | младог професора Марка | нове колегинице | direct object; destination with у/на |
| vocative | млади професоре Марко | нове колегинице | direct address, outside the clause roles |
| instrumental | младим професором Марком | новим колегиницама | са; means or role |
| locative | младом професору Марку | новим колегиницама | о, при; static у/на |
Syncretic cells do not make the case unknowable. Без младог професора Марка is genitive because of без; видим младог професора Марка is accusative because видети takes a direct object. Similarly, новим колегиницама receives its case from the local construction.
Recalculate at Every New Governor
Consider a short sequence about Jelena. Each mention has the same real-world reference but a different syntactic job.
Јелена је стигла раније, па сам Јелени одмах предао кључеве.
Jelena arrived early, so I handed the keys to Jelena right away.
The first Јелена is nominative subject. The second Јелени is the dative recipient of предати некоме нешто “hand something to someone.” Serbian does not keep the citation form merely because the listener already knows who Jelena is.
Касније сам видео Јелену и разговарао с Јеленом о распореду.
Later I saw Jelena and spoke with Jelena about the schedule.
Видети assigns accusative Јелену; са assigns instrumental Јеленом. The conjunction и joins two predicates, but each predicate builds its own case frame.
Natural discourse normally avoids needless repetition by using pronouns and clitics:
Јелена је стигла раније, па сам јој предао кључеве и касније разговарао с њом.
Jelena arrived early, so I handed her the keys and later spoke with her.
The short pronoun јој is dative; the full form њом is instrumental after с. The referent stays constant while the case signals each local relation.
Follow an Object Through Space
Place expressions make case switching especially visible. У and на select accusative for a destination and locative for a static setting; из and са select genitive for movement away. English often keeps “in/on” or switches prepositions without changing the noun, but Serbian packages direction and location through both preposition and case.
Улазим у банку, чекам у банци десет минута, а онда излазим из банке.
I go into the bank, wait in the bank for ten minutes, and then come out of the bank.
The same place appears as accusative у банку (destination), locative у банци (location), and genitive из банке (source). The forms follow the successive stages of the event.
Ставио сам фасциклу на горњу полицу, али је сада не видим на горњој полици.
I put the folder onto the top shelf, but now I don't see it on the top shelf.
На горњу полицу is an accusative endpoint; на горњој полици is a locative position. Every modifier switches with the noun. More two-case prepositions are treated on Two-Case Prepositions.
One Sentence Can Contain Several Independent Case Frames
Longer sentences become manageable when divided into local units. Find each predicate, identify its complements, and only then assemble the sentence.
После састанка са новим клијентом послала сам клијенту понуду коју је тражио.
After the meeting with the new client, I sent the client the proposal he had requested.
This sentence contains:
- genitive састанка after после;
- instrumental са новим клијентом after са;
- dative клијенту as recipient of послати;
- accusative понуду as the thing sent;
- accusative relative pronoun коју as the object of тражио.
The English preposition “to” is absent before the Serbian recipient because dative is licensed directly by послати. Conversely, Serbian после requires genitive where English simply uses “after.” Word-for-word preposition matching would miss both structures.
Директор је показао новинарима фотографије са отварања нове библиотеке.
The director showed the journalists photographs from the opening of the new library.
Here nominative директор performs the action, dative plural новинарима receives the information, accusative plural фотографије is the direct object, and both отварања and нове библиотеке are genitive. The chain works because each phrase answers a different structural question.
Information Structure Can Move Phrases, Not Change Their Case
Serbian can front an object or recipient for contrast. Moving it does not change which verb governs it.
Ову понуду сам послао клијенту, а ону сам задржао за архиву.
I sent this proposal to the client, but I kept that one for the archive.
Fronted ову понуду remains accusative; dative клијенту remains the recipient. The clitic auxiliary сам occupies its normal second-position slot after the fronted phrase.
Новим колегама ћемо помоћи данас, а са старим колегама разговараћемо сутра.
We'll help the new colleagues today, and we'll speak with the old colleagues tomorrow.
The two plural phrases end alike: новим колегама is dative after помоћи, while са старим колегама is instrumental after са. Position and ending alone do not identify the case; the governor does.
Vocative as a Brief Step Outside the Clause
Direct address can interrupt a sentence without becoming its subject or object. The surrounding clause continues to assign its own cases.
Марко, пошаљи Јелени уговор и разговарај с њом пре састанка.
Marko, send Jelena the contract and speak with her before the meeting.
Марко is vocative address, Јелени dative recipient, уговор accusative object, њом instrumental after с, and састанка genitive after пре. Commas separate the address from the clause. The dedicated Vocative Overview covers formation; the point here is how vocative fits among several case roles in one utterance.
Practice Task 1: Annotate the Case Path
Name the case of each form of станица and explain the switch.
Идем на станицу, чекам те на станици, а после полазимо са станице заједно.
I'm going to the station, I'll wait for you at the station, and afterward we'll leave the station together. Answer: accusative destination, locative position, genitive source.
Мапу станице показаћу туристима на станици.
I'll show the map of the station to the tourists at the station. Answer: станице is possessive genitive; туристима is dative recipient; на станици is locative.
Practice Task 2: Rebuild the Whole Phrase
Follow the clues and put онај љубазни лекар into the required cases.
Без оног љубазног лекара не бисмо завршили преглед на време.
Without that kind doctor, we wouldn't have completed the examination on time. Answer: genitive after без.
Захвалили смо оном љубазном лекару и кратко разговарали с оним љубазним лекаром.
We thanked that kind doctor and briefly spoke with that kind doctor. Answer: dative after захвалити се, then instrumental after с.
Common Mistakes
1. Keeping a name in nominative after its role changes.
❌ Видео сам Јелена и пришао Јелена после концерта.
Incorrect — видети requires accusative Јелену, while прићи requires dative Јелени.
✅ Видео сам Јелену и пришао Јелени после концерта.
I saw Jelena and approached her after the concert.
2. Changing the noun but not its modifiers.
❌ Разговарали смо са онај нови клијент о буџету.
Incorrect — са requires instrumental across the phrase: с оним новим клијентом.
✅ Разговарали смо с оним новим клијентом о буџету.
We spoke with that new client about the budget.
3. Using locative for a destination because English says “in.”
❌ После паузе враћамо се у великој сали.
Incorrect — the destination after у requires accusative: у велику салу.
✅ После паузе враћамо се у велику салу.
After the break we're going back into the large hall.
4. Assuming the shared plural ending identifies one case.
❌ Помажемо искусним волонтерима је инструментал јер се завршава на -има.
Incorrect — the verb помагати governs dative; the plural ending is syncretic.
✅ Помажемо искусним волонтерима да поделе храну.
We are helping the experienced volunteers distribute the food.
Key Takeaways
- Recalculate case whenever a new verb, preposition, or clause gives a referent a new role.
- The same place can be accusative as a destination, locative as a position, and genitive as a source.
- Long sentences contain several local government frames; bracket and solve them separately.
- Moving a phrase for topic or contrast does not change its case.
- Syncretic endings require evidence from the governor and meaning, not a guess based on shape.
