The Serbian genitive connects a noun phrase to an origin, whole, possessor, reference point, or governing word. English often uses of or from, but those translations are only clues: quantity expressions, particular verbs, and many prepositions also require the genitive. This page is a recognition map; the linked chapters give the full paradigms and the less frequent extensions.
The useful question is therefore not “Which English preposition do I replace?” but “What relationship does this Serbian phrase package?” A phrase such as из старе куће presents the house as an origin, while кров старе куће presents it as the whole to which the roof belongs. Both use the genitive, with no single English word shared by both translations.
The forms you need to recognize
These representative phrases show the main singular and plural patterns. They are a map, not a substitute for the full genitive paradigms. Genitive plural noun formation is particularly varied, so learn frequent nouns with their plural form.
| Type | Singular | Plural | What to notice |
|---|---|---|---|
| masculine | новог града | нових градова | adjective -ог; noun often -а in the singular |
| feminine in -а | нове књиге | нових књига | singular -е; plural noun pattern must be learned |
| feminine in a consonant | дуге ноћи | дугих ноћи | the noun forms can look identical |
| neuter | новог места | нових места | masculine/neuter modifiers coincide |
Every agreeing word changes, not just the noun. In без нашег новог пасоша, both нашег and новог are genitive masculine singular. The ending on one word may be ambiguous, but the whole phrase, its governor, and its meaning identify the case.
Не могу да нађем кључ од новог стана.
I can't find the key to the new apartment.
Вратили смо се без наших зимских јакни.
We came back without our winter jackets.
Possession and belonging
One noun can follow another in the genitive to identify an owner, author, part, or institutional relationship. Serbian has no apostrophe-s. Word order matters: the head noun comes first, and the dependent genitive follows it. Possessive adjectives are often preferred with people, especially a single familiar possessor, but the genitive remains normal for expanded phrases and many names or institutions. See possession with the genitive for that choice.
Телефон моје старије сестре остао је у колима.
My older sister's phone was left in the car.
На крају улице отворена је нова пекара.
A new bakery has opened at the end of the street.
The first genitive marks a possessor; the second marks a part–whole relation. Translating both with English of would hide their different meanings. Serbian groups them together because each dependent noun narrows the reference of the head noun.
Source, separation, absence, and position
Several common prepositions select the genitive. The central spatial group treats the noun as a source or boundary: из “out of/from inside,” од “from/away from,” and са “from/off.” Other high-frequency genitive prepositions include без “without,” код “at/near someone’s place,” поред “beside,” испред “in front of,” иза “behind,” пре “before,” and после “after.” Learn the preposition together with its case.
После посла свраћам код Милене на кафу.
After work, I'm stopping by Milena's for coffee.
Аутобус полази испред главног улаза у седам.
The bus leaves from in front of the main entrance at seven.
Case creates a contrast that English may express only through the preposition:
Сишли смо са старог моста пре гужве.
We came down from the old bridge before the crowds.
Сачекали смо пријатеље на старом мосту.
We waited for our friends on the old bridge.
In the first sentence са selects the genitive and marks a source. In the second, на plus the locative marks a stationary location. The similar English word on does not determine the Serbian case.
Quantity, measure, and the partitive meaning
After cardinal numbers five and above, many quantity words, and nouns of measure, the counted noun is genitive plural. A mass noun after an amount is normally genitive singular. This is why пет карата “five tickets” and шоља чаја “a cup of tea” share the genitive even though English structures them differently. The complete system, including two through four and compound numerals, belongs on the quantity page.
За пут нам требају две флаше воде и пет сендвича.
For the trip, we need two bottles of water and five sandwiches.
Остало је још мало домаћег хлеба.
There is still a little homemade bread left.
The genitive presents the noun as the substance or set from which an amount is taken. That same logic appears in partitive objects, where only an unspecified amount is intended, although everyday Serbian often uses the accusative instead. Do not force a genitive merely because an English sentence contains some.
Time and lexical government
The genitive also locates an event relative to a time span: током “during” governs it, and bare temporal genitives such as сваког јутра “every morning” are common too. Serbian also has the repeated-time accusative свако јутро with the same basic translation, so do not force every such phrase into one case; genitive time and dates treats their distribution in context. Some reflexive verbs and adjectives simply require a genitive complement. There is no universal English cue; government must be learned with the word. Frequent verbs include сећати се “remember” and плашити се “be afraid of.”
Током следеће недеље радићу од куће.
During the following week, I'll work from home.
Често се сећамо нашег првог путовања.
We often remember our first trip.
Дете се у почетку плашило великог пса.
At first, the child was afraid of the big dog.
Negation is not a blanket genitive trigger in contemporary Serbian. A normal definite direct object generally remains accusative under negation. Genitive under negation survives in restricted, partitive, fixed, or stylistically marked uses; the dedicated genitive of negation page separates those patterns.
Syncretism: when the form looks like another case
For ordinary masculine consonant-stem animate nouns, genitive and accusative singular are identical: новог студента can represent either case. Other declension classes have different patterns, so the ending must be interpreted within the noun's paradigm. Feminine consonant-stem nouns such as ноћ can have the same visible noun form in several cases, and genitive plural can resemble nominative singular.
Do not decide from the noun alone. In без дуге ноћи, без requires genitive, while in о дугој ноћи, о requires locative. Modifier endings make the contrast visible even though ноћи itself does not change.
Без мирне ноћи тешко ћу издржати сутрашњи дан.
Without a peaceful night, I'll have trouble getting through tomorrow.
Разговарали смо о мирној ноћи поред језера.
We talked about the peaceful night by the lake.
Common Mistakes
1. Translating English from with one Serbian preposition in every context.
❌ Враћам се од канцеларије у шест.
Incorrect — for movement out of an office, Serbian uses из plus the genitive, not од.
✅ Враћам се из канцеларије око шест.
I'm coming back from the office around six.
2. Declining the noun but leaving its modifiers unchanged.
❌ Не знам адресу нови ресторан.
Incorrect — both modifiers and the noun must form a genitive phrase.
✅ Не знам адресу новог ресторана у центру.
I don't know the address of the new restaurant downtown.
3. Using genitive for every direct object in a negative sentence.
❌ Нисам прочитао тог извештаја.
Incorrect in the intended neutral meaning — a definite direct object normally stays accusative under negation.
✅ Нисам прочитао тај извештај до краја.
I didn't read that report to the end.
Practice Tasks
Task 1: Identify the trigger
In the next sentence, find the two genitive phrases and name what licenses each one.
После дугог састанка попили смо по шољу јаке кафе.
After the long meeting, we each drank a cup of strong coffee.
Answer: после дугог састанка is governed by the preposition после; јаке кафе is the content of the measure phrase шоља.
Task 2: Choose source or location
Decide which form expresses movement away from the square rather than a position there.
Такси је кренуо са празног трга чим је киша почела.
The taxi left the empty square as soon as it started raining.
Answer: са празног трга is genitive because са presents the square as the source. A stationary location would use на празном тргу, with the locative.
Key Takeaways
The genitive is unified less by one English translation than by a family of relationships: belonging, source, separation, quantity, temporal reference, and lexical government. Look for the governor, decline the entire phrase, and use context to resolve identical-looking forms. Once that map is clear, move to the dedicated pages for plural formation, preposition choice, quantities, and stylistically marked uses.
