Idioms with megy, jön, tart, and kerül: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Hungarian motion-verb expressions divide semantic territory that English often covers with break, come up, find out, take, and cost. Tönkremegy describes broad failure, but a device may simply elromlik and food megromlik. Szóba jön admits an option, whereas szóba kerül introduces a topic. Rájön, megtud, észrevesz, and kitalál encode different routes to knowledge. This page chooses among the alternatives; review the forms and usage pages for their full frames.

Tönkremegy, elromlik, megromlik, or tönkretesz?

Use tönkremegy when something becomes unusable, collapses financially, or is broadly ruined. Elromlik is the everyday unmarked verb for a device or mechanism developing a fault. Meghibásodik is a more technical (formal) alternative. Megromlik is usual for food spoiling and can describe the quality of a relationship deteriorating. Tönkretesz valamit is transitive: a cause ruins an object.

Elromlott a kapucsengő, de a zár még működik.

The doorbell has broken, but the lock still works.

A beázás miatt tönkrement az egész elektromos rendszer.

The entire electrical system was ruined because of the leak.

The first describes one faulty component and leaves repairability open. The second presents extensive loss of function. Context can make both verbs possible, but they frame the scale differently.

A tej megromlott, mert egész éjjel a pulton maradt.

The milk spoiled because it was left on the counter all night.

A hirtelen áramszünet tönkretette a félbehagyott fájlt.

The sudden power cut corrupted the unfinished file.

The milk undergoes spoilage. The power cut acts on a definite object, hence definite tönkretette. English went bad must not automatically produce a form of megy.

💡
Choose by affected domain and transitivity: device fault elromlik, food spoilage megromlik, broad ruin tönkremegy, and a cause ruining an object tönkretesz valamit.

Szóba jön, szóba kerül, or felmerül?

Szóba jön means that something qualifies as an option. Szóba kerül means that it is mentioned or becomes the topic. Felmerül means that a question, concern, name, or possibility arises, without necessarily identifying who introduced it.

A kisebb tárgyaló is szóba jöhet, ha húsznál kevesebben leszünk.

The smaller meeting room could also be an option if there are fewer than twenty of us.

A megbeszélésen szóba került a bérleti szerződés meghosszabbítása.

The extension of the lease came up at the meeting.

Felmerült egy adatvédelmi probléma, amelyet még a bevezetés előtt meg kell oldanunk.

A data-protection issue arose that we need to solve before the launch.

The meeting topic may or may not become an eligible choice. The newly arisen problem is neither a candidate nor necessarily something already discussed. Under negation, nem jön szóba is often a strong rejection, while nem került szóba simply reports that a topic was not mentioned.

A külföldi költözés most nem jön szóba.

Moving abroad is not an option at the moment.

A külföldi költözés tegnap nem került szóba.

Moving abroad did not come up yesterday.

These sentences differ in decision status, not tense alone.

Rájön, megtud, észrevesz, or kitalál?

Use rájön valamire when someone reaches a realization through thought, evidence, or delayed recognition. Use megtud valamit when someone receives or obtains new information. Use észrevesz valamit for perceptual noticing. Use kitalál valamit for guessing, devising, or solving by thinking something up.

A szerkesztő rájött, miért csúsznak el a képek nyomtatáskor.

The editor realized why the images shift during printing.

Reggel tudtam meg, hogy elmarad a délutáni előadás.

I found out this morning that the afternoon lecture was canceled.

Észrevetted, hogy megváltozott a menetrend?

Did you notice that the timetable had changed?

Végül kitaláltuk, hogyan lehet kevesebb lépésből megoldani a feladatot.

Eventually we figured out how to solve the task in fewer steps.

Kitalál overlaps with English figure out when a solution is actively devised. Rájön foregrounds the moment of realizing an existing fact or connection. Megtud points toward a source of information, and észrevesz toward attention or perception.

Tart, telik, or időbe kerül?

Valami valameddig/valamennyi ideig tart makes the event the grammatical subject and describes its duration or endpoint. Telik makes time itself pass. Valaminek az elvégzése időbe telik or időbe kerül frames duration as the time required to complete something.

A felvételi beszélgetés körülbelül negyven percig tart.

The admissions interview lasts about forty minutes.

Már két óra telt el, de még mindig nem kaptunk választ.

Two hours have already passed, but we still haven't received an answer.

A régi iratok digitalizálása több hónapba telik.

Digitizing the old documents takes several months.

In the first, the interview lasts. In the second, two hours pass. In the third, a task requires time, expressed with illative hónapba. English take can cover the first and third but does not reveal their Hungarian argument structure.

The question matches the structure: Meddig tart az interjú?; Mennyi idő telt el?; Mennyi időbe telik a digitalizálás?

Kerül or fizet?

Valami valamibe kerül describes an item's price or an undertaking's cost. Valaki valamennyit fizet valamiért describes the payer's action. The amount is illative with kerül but accusative with fizet; the purchased item takes -ért with fizet.

A javítás huszonötezer forintba került.

The repair cost twenty-five thousand forints.

Huszonötezer forintot fizettem a javításért.

I paid twenty-five thousand forints for the repair.

The same transaction is viewed from opposite participants. Do not combine the frames as huszonötezer forintot került or forintba fizettem.

For nonfinancial resources, kerül highlights cost or sacrifice: sok energiába került. Neutral igényel “require” is often clearer in formal planning when no negative evaluation of cost is intended.

Az ellenőrzés sok figyelmet igényel, de nem kerül külön pénzbe.

The inspection requires a great deal of attention but does not cost extra money.

💡
Use the grammatical subject to choose perspective. If the item has a price, use valamibe kerül. If a person pays, use valamennyit fizet valamiért.

Sor kerül or sorra kerül?

Sor kerül valamire is an agent-backgrounding formal expression meaning that an event occurs in an agenda or sequence. Valaki/valami sorra kerül means that a person or item gets its turn.

A módosító javaslatokról szóló vitára délután kerül sor.

The debate on the amendments will take place in the afternoon. (formal)

Még három ügyfél várakozik előttem, utána én kerülök sorra.

Three customers are still waiting ahead of me; then it will be my turn.

The case spelling encodes the structure: separate sor plus a later -ra/-re event, but joined sorra when “onto the turn/order” belongs directly with kerül. In ordinary conversation, a direct verb may avoid the institutional tone:

Délután vitatjuk meg a módosító javaslatokat.

We'll discuss the amendments this afternoon.

Focus and prefix separation

Neutral rájöttem a hibára and tönkrement a motor present the expression as one unit. Negation and preverbal focus split them: nem jöttem rá, nem ment tönkre, A HIBÁRA jöttem rá. In natural orthography, stress is not written with capitals, so context can make focus explicit:

A hibára jöttem rá, nem a végleges megoldásra.

It was the error that I identified, not the final solution.

Nem ment tönkre a rendszer; egy rossz beállítás okozta a leállást.

The system did not break down; an incorrect setting caused the outage.

Szóba jön remains two words, but order still alternates: ez is szóba jön versus ez nem jön szóba. Spelling and syntax must both be learned.

Decision tree

  1. Did a device develop a fault? Elromlik. Did food spoil? Megromlik. Was something broadly ruined? Tönkremegy. Did a cause ruin an object? Tönkretesz.
  2. Is something an eligible option? Szóba jön. Was it mentioned? Szóba kerül. Did a problem or idea arise? Felmerül.
  3. Did the person reach a realization? Rájön. Receive information? Megtud. Perceive a change? Észrevesz. Devise or guess a solution? Kitalál.
  4. Does an event last? Tart. Does time pass? Telik. Does completing a task require time? Időbe telik/kerül.
  5. Does an item have a price? Valamibe kerül. Does a payer hand over an amount? Fizet valamiért.
  6. Does a scheduled event take place? Sor kerül valamire. Does a participant get a turn? Sorra kerül.

Diagnostic exercise

Choose the best expression.

  1. Yogurt left in the sun: tönkremegy / megromlik.
  2. A proposal is eligible for consideration: szóba jön / szóba kerül.
  3. You hear the result from a colleague: rájössz / megtudod.
  4. The meeting has a ninety-minute duration: tart / telik el.
  5. A speaker's turn arrives: sor kerül rá / sorra kerül.

Answers: (1) megromlik, the ordinary food-spoilage verb. (2) szóba jön, because it enters the option set. (3) megtudod, because another person supplies the information. (4) tart, with the meeting as subject. (5) sorra kerül, because a participant gets a turn.

Common Mistakes

❌ A sajt rosszul ment a meleg autóban.

Incorrect word-for-word transfer of English ‘went bad’: Hungarian uses megromlott for food spoilage.

✅ A sajt megromlott a meleg autóban.

The cheese spoiled in the hot car.

❌ A költségcsökkentés szóba jött a tegnapi ülésen.

Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘was mentioned’: szóba jön presents an option, not merely a topic.

✅ A költségcsökkentés szóba került a tegnapi ülésen.

Cost reduction came up at yesterday's meeting.

❌ Rájöttem a hírt a kollégámtól.

Incorrect verb and case frame: information received from a source is megtud valamit valakitől.

✅ Megtudtam a hírt a kollégámtól.

I learned the news from my colleague.

❌ Az új monitor százhúszezer forintot kerül.

Incorrect cost case: the amount with kerül takes -ba/-be.

✅ Az új monitor százhúszezer forintba kerül.

The new monitor costs one hundred and twenty thousand forints.
