Proverbs, Reduplication, and Formal Support Verbs: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian fixed expressions are structured, even when their meaning cannot be calculated word by word. A proverb may preserve a balanced clause pattern; reduplication may repeat a complete form or pair two related forms; formal prose may combine a semantically light verb with an event noun. The learner's task is to recognize what remains grammatically productive and what must be stored as a whole expression.

Three formal architectures

TypeCore patternExampleRegister
proverbbalanced complete clausesAddig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg.neutral; rhetorically marked
exact reduplicationX-Xnéha-néhaneutral, common in speech and prose
comparative echocomparative + -nál/-nél + comparativejobbnál jobbneutral, expressive
support-verb collocationevent noun + conventional verbdöntést hozformal/administrative
support-verb collocationevent noun + conventional verbintézkedést teszformal/administrative

The table is a map, not a license to substitute any similar word. Döntést hoz is conventional, while literal English-driven combinations such as döntést csinál are not. Likewise, duplicating an arbitrary adverb does not guarantee an established Hungarian expression.

The architecture of a proverb

Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg corresponds to “Strike while the iron is hot.” The Hungarian proverb contains a correlative pair: addig “until then/for as long as that” points forward to amíg “while/as long as.” The first clause is an instruction; the second gives the temporal limit.

Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg: hívd fel ma a támogatót!

Strike while the iron is hot: call the sponsor today!

Its structure can be segmented as follows:

  • addig: distal temporal correlate, “until then/as long as that”;
  • üsd: second-person singular definite imperative of üt “strike”;
  • a vasat: definite accusative object, “the iron”;
  • amíg: temporal subordinator, “while/as long as”;
  • meleg: present-tense adjective predicate, with zero copula.

The comma between the two clauses is required. Hungarian spelling writes a comma at this subordinate-clause boundary, even though English punctuation around “while” may vary. The parallel addig ... amíg ... frame and the initial stress of Hungarian words give the saying its memorable rhythm.

Addig dolgozzunk a javaslaton, amíg mindenki számára elfogadható nem lesz.

Let's keep working on the proposal until it becomes acceptable to everyone.

This second sentence uses the productive correlative grammar without quoting the proverb. The correlative conjunctions page explains that general structure. A proverb fixes one culturally recognized wording inside a broader grammatical pattern.

💡
Memorize a proverb with its punctuation and verb form. Here üsd is definite because its object is a vasat; replacing it with the indefinite imperative üss breaks the internal agreement.

Exact reduplication: néha-néha

In néha-néha, the full adverb néha “sometimes” is repeated and the two copies are joined by a hyphen. The result means “every now and then” or “occasionally,” often suggesting scattered occurrences.

Néha-néha még most is előveszem a régi fényképalbumot.

Every now and then, I still take out the old photo album.

A motor néha-néha furcsa hangot ad, ezért megnézetem.

The engine makes a strange noise now and then, so I'm having it checked.

This pattern is productive only within limits. Established forms include lassan-lassan “little by little,” egy-egy “one or two/an occasional,” and már-már “almost.” The semantic effect is not uniform: repetition may distribute occurrences, suggest gradual development, or intensify an approach to a boundary.

Lassan-lassan mindenki megtalálta a helyét az új csapatban.

Little by little, everyone found their place in the new team.

The hyphen signals one coordinated lexical unit. It is not the same as accidental repetition across a pause, as when a hesitant speaker repeats a word.

Comparative echo: jobbnál jobb

Jobbnál jobb literally has the shape “better than better,” but idiomatically means “one better than the next” or “excellent after excellent.” Its productive template is:

comparative adjective + -nál/-nél + the same comparative adjective

A pékségben jobbnál jobb kovászos kenyereket lehet kapni.

You can get one superb sourdough loaf after another at the bakery.

A pályázatra szebbnél szebb illusztrációk érkeztek.

One beautiful illustration after another was submitted to the competition.

Vowel harmony selects -nál after a back-vowel form and -nél after a front-vowel form: jobb-nál jobb, but szebb-nél szebb and érdekesebb-nél érdekesebb. The adjective must already be comparative: jó → jobb, szép → szebb, érdekes → érdekesebb. The whole phrase attributes a high degree across a plural or collective set.

A beszélgetés során érdekesebbnél érdekesebb kérdések merültek fel.

During the discussion, one fascinating question after another came up.

💡
The first comparative carries -nál/-nél; the second does not. Apply vowel harmony to the suffixed comparative, not to the dictionary form in isolation.

Formal support verbs

A support-verb construction places the main event meaning in a noun while a conventional verb supplies tense, person, mood, and aspect. Döntést hoz means “make/reach a decision.” The noun döntés receives the accusative -t, and hoz carries the verbal grammar.

A bizottság holnap hoz döntést a pályázatokról.

The committee will make a decision on the applications tomorrow.

A vezetőség végül egyhangú döntést hozott az ügyben.

The management ultimately reached a unanimous decision on the matter.

The noun can take modifiers such as egyhangú, végleges, or megalapozott. With a definite object, the verb uses the definite conjugation: meghozta a döntést. The verbal prefix meg- commonly presents the decision as reached or completed.

A testület még nem hozta meg a végleges döntést.

The board has not yet made the final decision.

Intézkedést tesz means “take a measure,” often with valami érdekében “in the interest of something” or valami ellen “against something.” It belongs especially to official and journalistic writing (formal).

Az iskola azonnali intézkedéseket tett a tanulók biztonsága érdekében.

The school took immediate measures to ensure the students' safety.

A hatóság további intézkedést tesz a szabálytalanság megszüntetésére.

The authority will take a further measure to eliminate the irregularity.

The collocation intézkedést hoz is also attested in formal Hungarian, especially when an institution enacts or introduces a measure: the choice is not categorically tesz in every context. Plural intézkedéseket tesz readily profiles a series of steps, whereas intézkedést hoz can present a measure as an institutional act. The simpler verbs dönt and intézkedik are often more direct, particularly in conversation. The support construction is useful when the event noun needs a determiner or detailed modifiers, or when institutional style favors nominal expression.

Segmentation exercise

Segment each bold form, then identify what each piece contributes.

  1. szebbnél szebb
  2. intézkedéseket tett
  3. meghozta a döntést
  4. Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg.

Answers: 1 szép → szebb + -nél + szebb: irregular comparative plus comparison suffix plus echoed comparative. 2 intézkedés + -ek + -et + tett: event noun, plural, accusative, past support verb. 3 meg- + hoz + -ta, followed by a döntés + -t: completed definite verb plus definite accusative object. 4 addig + üsd + a vasat + amíg + meleg: temporal correlate, definite imperative, definite object, subordinator, zero-copula predicate.

Common Mistakes

Write established reduplication with a hyphen.

❌ Néha néha késik a reggeli vonat.

Incorrect spelling: the established reduplicated adverb requires a hyphen.

✅ Néha-néha késik a reggeli vonat.

Every now and then, the morning train is late.

Keep the comparison suffix in the echo pattern.

❌ Jobb jobb ajánlatokat kaptunk.

Incorrect: simple repetition does not form the established comparative echo.

✅ Jobbnál jobb ajánlatokat kaptunk.

We received one excellent offer after another.

Do not translate English make a decision with csinál.

❌ A bizottság döntést csinált.

Incorrect: Hungarian selects the support verb 'hoz' with 'döntés.'

✅ A bizottság döntést hozott.

The committee made a decision.

Use the definite imperative inside the proverb.

❌ Addig üss a vasat, amíg meleg.

Incorrect: the imperative does not agree with the definite object 'a vasat.'

✅ Addig üsd a vasat, amíg meleg.

Strike while the iron is hot.
