Terminative -ig marks the limit up to which a path, interval, or scale extends. It does not by itself make that limit a destination or say that an action finishes exactly there. A named final calendar unit is normally included, while the precise cut-off within that unit comes from context. This page focuses on those boundaries; see terminative forms and terminative usage for the invariant suffix and its central uses.
Limit versus destination
Compare a destination case with terminative -ig. A destination case presents the endpoint as where someone goes; terminative presents the extent of the route.
Holnap Budapestre utazunk.
Tomorrow we're traveling to Budapest.
Budapestig vonattal megyünk, onnan busszal tovább.
We're going as far as Budapest by train, then continuing by bus.
The first makes Budapest the trip destination. The second makes it the boundary of one travel segment; the travelers may transfer there and continue. The same contrast works at a smaller scale:
Elsétáltunk a hídhoz.
We walked over to the bridge.
A folyóparton egészen a hídig sétáltunk.
We walked along the riverbank all the way to the bridge.
A hídhoz belongs to the vicinity destination network; a hídig measures the completed path. English to can translate both, so the English preposition cannot choose the Hungarian form.
Until, by, or for a duration?
Temporal -ig sets an endpoint for a state or activity that extends through time.
Ötig dolgozom, utána találkozhatunk.
I'm working until five; we can meet afterward.
Sublative -ra/-re can instead set a target deadline or appointment time:
Ötre befejezem a jelentést.
I'll finish the report by five.
The contrast is aspectual. Ötig dolgozom describes work continuing toward five. Ötre befejezem presents a completed result targeted for five. Exact clock time uses -kor: Ötkor kezdem “I'll start at five.”
A duration answers “for how long?” and can use accusative or -n át, depending on construction.
Két órát vártam.
I waited for two hours.
Két órán át vártam.
I waited for two hours.
Két óráig vártam is also possible, but it can mean either “I waited until two o'clock” or “I waited for up to/two hours,” depending on context. A clock reading normally makes the first clear; két órán át unambiguously profiles duration.
Is the final day included?
Everyday péntekig can mean “until/by Friday.” Friday is normally included as the named final day, although context may leave the exact cut-off time on Friday unstated. Hungarian provides explicit boundary expressions when the distinction matters.
Péntekig küldd el a jelentést!
Send the report by Friday!
This sets Friday as the latest relevant day, but it does not specify a clock time. To make inclusion fully explicit in formal writing, add bezárólag:
A pályázatokat szeptember 30-ig bezárólag fogadjuk.
Applications are accepted through September 30, inclusive.
For an exclusive boundary, say so directly:
A jelentést még péntek előtt küldd el.
Send the report before Friday.
Official notices often add legkésőbb “at the latest” or an exact time (formal). Conversation relies more on shared context (informal). Inclusion of the named calendar day is the normal interpretation; the ambiguity concerns the endpoint's practical granularity, not whether -ig has a second exclusive form.
Source-to-limit spans
Ablative -tól/-től and terminative -ig often frame a complete interval. The first marks the starting boundary; the second marks the terminal boundary.
Hétfőtől péntekig minden nap nyitva vagyunk.
We're open every day from Monday to Friday.
A túra a falutól a kilátóig körülbelül két óra.
The hike from the village to the lookout takes about two hours.
The starting phrase need not always be ablative. Place-name convention or a postposition can produce other source forms, but the terminal member remains -ig when it marks extent. In reggeltől estig, both boundaries are conventional time points.
Reggeltől estig esett az eső.
It rained from morning until evening.
Scalar limits and body-height expressions
Terminative can locate the upper boundary on a nonliteral scale, including height on the body, number, degree, or intensity.
A víz térdig ért.
The water came up to our knees.
A gyerek már százig tud számolni.
The child can already count to one hundred.
Amikor meglátta az ajándékot, fülig ért a szája.
When he/she saw the gift, he/she grinned from ear to ear.
The idiom fülig ér a szája literally places the limit at the ears. These uses are extensions of bounded extent, not separate translations of English to.
Endpoint versus completion
Terminative says where extension stops, but verb aspect says whether a task is completed.
A harmadik fejezetig olvastam.
I read as far as chapter three.
This may mean the reader reached chapter three, not necessarily finished it. For explicit completion:
Elolvastam az első három fejezetet.
I read the first three chapters completely.
Likewise, félig megírtam means “I wrote it halfway,” while a perfective prefix can frame a completed portion rather than the whole project. Do not infer completion from -ig alone.
Information structure and register
A fronted terminative phrase can be contrastive focus.
Csak a megállóig kísérlek el, nem a pályaudvarig.
I'll walk with you only as far as the stop, not the station.
Elkísérlek a megállóig.
I'll walk with you as far as the stop.
The first contrasts two endpoint limits and places csak a megállóig before the verb; the prefix el follows kísérlek. The case does not change. Legal and administrative writing often clarifies endpoints with bezárólag, legkésőbb, terjedően (formal); everyday ötig, holnapig are neutral (informal).
Decision tree
- Does the phrase express “as far as/up to/until”? Use -ig.
- Is it simply the destination entered or reached? Choose its local destination case instead.
- Does an activity continue toward a time boundary? -ig fits; a result due by a target time often uses -ra/-re.
- Is the phrase pure duration? Prefer accusative duration or -n át when no endpoint reading is intended.
- Must inclusion be legally or practically explicit? Add bezárólag for inclusive “through,” or use előtt for “before.”
- Is there a starting boundary too? Pair its source form, often -tól/-től, with -ig.
Diagnostic exercise
- Bécsig / Bécsbe repülünk, és ott maradunk. → Bécsbe if Vienna is the destination entered. Bécsig repülünk, onnan vonattal makes it a segment boundary.
- Hatig / hatra dolgozom. → Hatig: work continues until six. Hatra kész leszek means “I'll be ready by six.”
- Három óráig / három órán át beszélgettünk. → Három órán át unambiguously means a three-hour duration. Három óráig may mean until three o'clock.
- Hétfőtől péntekig / hétfőn és pénteken vagyok bent. → Hétfőtől péntekig expresses the continuous range; hétfőn és pénteken names only two separate days.
- Derékig / derékra ér a víz. → Derékig: the waist is a scalar height limit.
Common Mistakes
❌ A bolt kilencre van nyitva.
Incorrect for ‘open until nine’ — -ra sets a target time rather than the extent of opening.
✅ A bolt kilencig van nyitva.
The shop is open until nine.
❌ Péntekre várok, aztán döntök.
Wrong for ‘I will wait until Friday’ — péntekre expresses a target associated with Friday in other constructions.
✅ Péntekig várok, aztán döntök.
I'll wait until Friday, then decide.
❌ Hétfőből péntekig dolgozom.
Incorrect — the starting boundary of a time span takes -tól/-től, not the interior-source case.
✅ Hétfőtől péntekig dolgozom.
I work from Monday to Friday.
❌ A víz a térdre ért.
Incorrect for height — -ra describes a surface endpoint, not the upper limit of the water.
✅ A víz térdig ért.
The water came up to our knees.
Key Takeaways
- -ig marks a spatial, temporal, or scalar limit, not an ordinary destination.
- Continuing until a time contrasts with completing something by a target time.
- Duration forms and endpoint forms overlap in some phrases; use context or -n át to disambiguate.
- A named final calendar unit is normally included; bezárólag or an exact time can make the practical cut-off explicit.
- -tól/-től … -ig frames a source-to-limit span.
- Case networks, aspect, and information structure provide more reliable guidance than English prepositions.
