Superessive -on/-en/-ön/-n competes most visibly with inessive -ban/-ben: Hungarian distinguishes a surface/domain from an interior/container. Yet real usage also depends on lexical convention. A concert is normally koncerten, a cinema moziban; Budapest is Budapesten, Debrecen Debrecenben. This page supplies the decision boundaries and diagnostics; superessive forms gives the allomorphs, and superessive usage develops each semantic extension.
Surface versus interior
The literal opposition is contact with a surface versus containment inside a three-dimensional region.
A pohár az asztalon van.
The glass is on the table.
A víz a pohárban van.
The water is in the glass.
The contrast remains when direction changes. Each static case belongs to its own location–destination–source triple.
| Construal | Location | Destination | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| surface | asztalon | asztalra | asztalról |
| interior | dobozban | dobozba | dobozból |
| vicinity | ajtónál | ajtóhoz | ajtótól |
Rátettem a könyvet a dobozra.
I put the book on the box.
Betettem a könyvet a dobozba.
I put the book into the box.
The verbal prefixes rá- and be- reinforce the same geometry as dobozra and dobozba. They do not replace case marking.
Physical location versus institutional participation
With institutions, Hungarian may foreground either activity/affiliation or literal containment. Some nouns strongly conventionalize one case.
A fiam az egyetemen tanul.
My son studies at university.
A fiam az egyetem könyvtárában tanul.
My son is studying in the university library.
Az egyetemen presents the institution as the domain of study. Az egyetem könyvtárában names an actual interior. But not every educational institution copies egyetem: neutral Hungarian says iskolában, not iskolán, for “at school.”
A gyerekek már az iskolában vannak.
The children are already at school.
Likewise, postán contrasts lexically with bankban. These pairs have historical and conventional motivations, but no productive English-based rule predicts them. Learn the static case with the noun.
Event versus venue
An event commonly takes superessive, while the building hosting it may take inessive.
A koncerten alig hallottuk az énekest.
At the concert we could hardly hear the singer.
A koncertteremben alig működött a légkondicionálás.
The air conditioning was barely working in the concert hall.
The first places the participants within the social event; the second locates a physical problem inside the hall. Similarly, Hungarian says bulin, esküvőn, értekezleten, but moziban, színházban for the venue/institution.
A moziban találkoztunk, aztán együtt mentünk a fesztiválra.
We met at the cinema, then went to the festival together.
Here moziban belongs to the interior triple, while destination fesztiválra predicts static fesztiválon.
Calendar point versus container or clock time
English uses on for days, in for months, and at for times. Hungarian reaches a similar division through three different morphological choices, but it is the Hungarian time category that matters.
Hétfőn indulunk, és júniusban jövünk vissza.
We're leaving on Monday and coming back in June.
A vonat hétfőn hat órakor indul.
The train leaves at six o'clock on Monday.
Hétfőn is superessive, júniusban inessive, and exact clock time uses -kor. A duration takes yet another form:
Hat órán át tárgyaltunk.
We negotiated for six hours.
In hat órán át, superessive órán occurs inside the postpositional duration construction -n át. It does not mean “at six”; compare hat órakor. Numeric calendar dates take forms such as május 8-án, read május nyolcadikán.
Location on a vehicle versus means of travel
Superessive can place someone aboard public transport; instrumental -val/-vel presents the vehicle as the means.
A vonaton elolvastam az üzenetedet.
I read your message on the train.
Vonattal mentem Szegedre.
I went to Szeged by train.
The same trip can support both phrases:
Vonattal jöttem, de a vonaton végig dolgoztam.
I came by train, but I worked throughout the journey on the train.
English by train cannot be translated as vonaton in every context. Conversely, telefonon beszéltünk conventionally uses superessive for the communication channel, while a telefonnal lefényképeztem uses instrumental for the tool: “I photographed it with the phone.”
Settlement classes are lexical
Many Hungarian settlements are surface-marked, but others are interior-marked. The contrast does not reflect whether the place is large or enclosed.
Budapesten dolgozom, de Debrecenben lakom.
I work in Budapest but live in Debrecen.
Szegeden szállunk meg, aztán Győrben töltünk két napot.
We're staying in Szeged, then spending two days in Győr.
The corresponding routes are Budapesten – Budapestre – Budapestről and Debrecenben – Debrecenbe – Debrecenből. Pécsen is a regular superessive form; Pécsett is also standard, though the special -tt locative may sound elevated or old-fashioned today. Do not freely create -tt forms for other names.
Foreign settlements generally favor the interior triple—Londonban, Londonba, Londonból—but established exceptions and historical Hungarian names mean that dictionary checking is sometimes unavoidable.
Information structure and register
Fronting a superessive phrase can make it the contrastive focus. Case remains the same, while a verbal prefix follows the verb.
A koncerten ismertem meg Dórát, nem az egyetemen.
It was at the concert that I met Dóra, not at university.
Megismertem Dórát egy koncerten.
I met Dóra at a concert.
The first contrasts locations and splits megismertem into ismertem meg. The second presents the meeting neutrally. Superessive itself is register-neutral.
Register can favor different vocabulary. Az ülésen megvitatták a költségvetést is institutional (formal); a bulin beszélgettünk is everyday (informal). Neither register permits arbitrary case switching.
Decision tree
- Literal contact/support on a surface? Use superessive.
- Literal containment? Use inessive; vicinity without containment may call for adessive -nál/-nél.
- Participation in an event? Superessive is the default for many event nouns; a named venue may be inessive.
- Institutional noun? Retrieve its lexical pattern: egyetemen, postán, but iskolában, bankban.
- Day, season, or exact date? Use superessive. Month uses inessive; clock time uses -kor.
- Transport setting or communication channel? Superessive may fit. If the phrase is purely the vehicle/tool as means, test instrumental.
- Settlement? Retrieve its full location–destination–source triple.
Diagnostic exercise
- A kabát a szekrényen / szekrényben van. → Normally szekrényben, because a wardrobe is a container. Szekrényen is possible only if the coat lies on top of it.
- A testvérem egyetemen / iskolán tanul. → egyetemen is correct for university; “at school” is iskolában, demonstrating lexical selection.
- Kedden / keddben találkozunk. → Kedden, because weekdays take superessive.
- Vonaton / vonattal mentem Pécsre. → Vonattal answers how you traveled. A vonaton aludtam would use superessive for the onboard setting.
- Budapesten / Budapestben születtem. → Budapesten, the conventional standard form.
Common Mistakes
❌ A kulcs a fiókon van.
Incorrect if the key is inside the drawer — -on means on its surface.
✅ A kulcs a fiókban van.
The key is in the drawer.
❌ A találkozó kedden tíz órán lesz.
Incorrect for clock time — órán means ‘on an hour’ or appears in duration constructions.
✅ A találkozó kedden tíz órakor lesz.
The meeting will be at ten o'clock on Tuesday.
❌ Éles késen szeleteltem fel a paradicsomot.
Incorrect — a knife used as a tool takes instrumental, not superessive.
✅ Éles késsel szeleteltem fel a paradicsomot.
I sliced the tomato with a sharp knife.
❌ Győrön maradunk éjszakára.
Incorrect — Győr conventionally uses the interior case family.
✅ Győrben maradunk éjszakára.
We're staying overnight in Győr.
Key Takeaways
- Superessive belongs to the surface triple; inessive belongs to the interior triple.
- Event and institution marking is lexical: compare koncerten, egyetemen, moziban, and iskolában.
- Days/dates, months, and clock times use different Hungarian constructions.
- Superessive setting/channel contrasts with instrumental means/tool.
- Settlement case must be stored as a triple, not guessed from size or spelling.
- Word order changes focus, while case continues to encode the semantic relation.
