Hungarian expressions built with van, tesz, vesz, ad, and kap are not assembled by translating an English noun and then choosing a generic verb such as be, do, take, give, or get. Each expression is a package with its own case frame, object definiteness, word order, and setting. The companion forms page gives the core shapes and the usage page develops their everyday contexts. Here the goal is to distinguish their nearest competitors.
Igaza van, igaz, or helyes?
Valakinek igaza van means that a person is right. The person appears in the dative when expressed as a noun, while igaz carries a possessive ending: igazam, igazad, igaza, igazunk, igazatok, igazuk. English makes you the subject of are; Hungarian literally structures the idea more like “to you there is your rightness.”
Igazad van, rossz dátumot írtam a meghívóra.
You're right; I put the wrong date on the invitation.
A könyvelőnek igaza volt: kétszer vonták le ugyanazt az összeget.
The accountant was right: the same amount was deducted twice.
Use predicative igaz for a proposition that is true, and helyes for an answer, form, action, or analysis that is correct or appropriate.
Igaz, hogy későn szóltunk, de korábban mi sem tudtunk a változásról.
It is true that we gave notice late, but we did not know about the change earlier either.
A számítás eredménye helyes, csak a magyarázat hiányos.
The result of the calculation is correct; only the explanation is incomplete.
Igaza van evaluates a person's position. Igaz evaluates truth. Helyes evaluates correctness. English right covers all three and therefore cannot choose the Hungarian construction for you.
Szükség van valamire or kell valami?
Szükség van valamire presents something as a requirement. The required item takes -ra/-re; the person or group with the need may be dative, and szükség carries a matching possessive ending: szükségem van, szükséged van, szüksége van.
A csapatnak még két napra van szüksége a teszteléshez.
The team needs two more days for testing.
Kell often presents an immediate necessity more compactly. The needed thing is nominative, not sublative.
Kell még egy hosszabbító, különben nem ér el a kábel az asztalig.
We need another extension lead; otherwise the cable won't reach the desk.
Both can describe need, but szükség van explicitly names a requirement and is frequent in formal planning, instructions, and analysis. Kell is shorter and extremely common in conversation. Do not mix their frames: szükség van segítségre, but segítség kell.
Rendet tesz or rendbe tesz?
Rendet tesz contains indefinite accusative rendet and means to tidy up or establish order in a place or situation. Rendbe tesz valamit takes a separate object and means to put that thing into proper condition, fix it, or sort it out.
Vacsora előtt rendet teszek a konyhában.
I'll tidy up the kitchen before dinner.
A hét végéig rendbe tesszük az elavult ügyféllistát.
By the end of the week, we'll put the outdated client list in order.
The case frame reveals the distinction. Rendet tesz valahol answers where order is established. Rendbe tesz valamit has a definite or indefinite thing being restored or organized. English put in order can refer to either scene.
Negation also differs orthographically. Rendet tesz remains two words around the finite verb: nem tesz rendet. In neutral rendbe tesz, rendbe is still written separately; it moves after the verb under negation: nem teszi rendbe a listát.
Részt vesz or simply vesz?
Részt vesz valamiben means to participate in an event or activity. The event normally takes -ban/-ben, and the fixed accusative noun részt stands before the verb in neutral order.
Nóra részt vesz egy háromnapos továbbképzésen.
Nóra is taking part in a three-day professional-development course.
A gyakornokok nem vesznek részt a pénteki vezetői ülésen.
The interns are not taking part in Friday's management meeting.
Literal vesz has many meanings, including “take” and “buy,” but it does not by itself mean “participate.”
Nóra jegyet vesz a szombati előadásra.
Nóra is buying a ticket for Saturday's performance.
Compare the grammar: jegyet vesz has an ordinary accusative object, while részt vesz is a fixed verbal expression whose activity complement is inessive or superessive depending on the event noun: a képzésen, a versenyben, a munkában. There is no one case for every English phrase beginning with in.
Figyelembe vesz, észrevesz, or számol valamivel?
Figyelembe vesz valamit means to take something into account. It takes an accusative object, so definite objects select the definite conjugation: figyelembe veszi a költségeket. The expression is common in neutral professional speech and formal writing.
A végleges beosztásnál figyelembe vesszük az egyéni kéréseket.
When preparing the final schedule, we will take individual requests into account.
Észrevesz valamit means to notice or perceive it; számol valamivel means to allow for or reckon with it, especially as a possibility, cost, or constraint.
Csak indulás után vettem észre, hogy otthon maradt a töltőm.
I only noticed after leaving that I had left my charger at home.
A tervezésnél számolnunk kell a nyári forgalommal.
In planning, we have to allow for the summer traffic.
Taking evidence into a decision, perceiving a fact, and anticipating a factor are related but different mental operations. English consider or take into account may blur them.
Tanácsot ad or javasol?
Tanácsot ad valakinek means to give someone advice. Tanácsot is an indefinite accusative object, and the recipient is dative. A topic may be expressed with valamivel kapcsolatban or another appropriate phrase.
A szerelő hasznos tanácsot adott nekem a téli tárolással kapcsolatban.
The mechanic gave me useful advice about winter storage.
Javasol valamit proposes or recommends a particular option or action. It often takes an accusative noun or azt javasolja, hogy....
Az orvos azt javasolta, hogy egy hétig ne fussak.
The doctor recommended that I not run for a week.
Advice can contain several suggestions; a suggestion can be made without the broader counseling relationship implied by tanácsot ad. Hungarian tanács is countable, so egy tanács and plural tanácsok are normal—unlike uncountable English advice.
Választ kap or válaszol?
These expressions reverse perspective. Valaki választ kap valamire valakitől presents the recipient obtaining an answer. Valaki válaszol valamire valakinek presents the responder's action.
Végre választ kaptunk a kérdésünkre a biztosítótól.
We finally received an answer to our question from the insurance company.
A biztosító két munkanapon belül válaszolt a kérdésünkre.
The insurance company answered our question within two business days.
In both, the question or request commonly takes -ra/-re. The source with kap is -tól/-től; the recipient with válaszol is dative. Learn the direction together with the cases.
Information structure and expression order
Several fixed nouns behave like verbal prefixes in neutral order but move after the finite verb under negation or focus.
Minden pályázó részt vesz az interjún.
Every applicant takes part in the interview.
A telefonos interjún nem vesz részt minden pályázó.
Not every applicant takes part in the telephone interview.
Ezt a körülményt vesszük figyelembe, nem a tavalyi adatot.
It is this circumstance that we will take into account, not last year's figure.
Contrastive focus ezt a körülményt stands immediately before the finite verb and splits the expression: ezt vesszük figyelembe. Neutral order is figyelembe vesszük, while negation gives nem vesszük figyelembe. Fixed expressions must therefore be learned with both neutral and split patterns, not as rigid English-style strings.
Decision tree
- Is a person right? Use igaza van. Is a proposition true? igaz. Is an answer or procedure correct? helyes.
- Are you naming a structured requirement with -ra/-re? Use szükség van. Is it an immediate needed item? kell is often simpler.
- Are you tidying a place? rendet tesz valahol. Restoring a particular thing? rendbe tesz valamit.
- Is someone participating? Use részt vesz plus the event's appropriate local case.
- Is a factor incorporated into a decision? figyelembe vesz. Perceived? észrevesz. Anticipated? számol valamivel.
- Is someone counseling another person? tanácsot ad valakinek. Recommending a specific action? javasol.
- Whose perspective matters: the recipient gets an answer (választ kap) or the source answers (válaszol)?
Diagnostic exercise
Choose the natural expression and case.
- “You are right”: igaz vagy / igazad van.
- “We need more space”: több tér kell / szükségünk van több térre.
- Participation in a competition: részt vesz a versenyben / részt vesz a versenyt.
- The ministry considers regional differences: észreveszi / figyelembe veszi.
- The customer receives a reply to a complaint: választ kap a panaszára / válaszol a panaszát.
Answers: (1) igazad van, because the person is right. (2) both are grammatical; the first is compact, while the second explicitly frames a requirement. (3) a versenyben, the lexical case frame. (4) figyelembe veszi, because the factor affects a decision. (5) választ kap a panaszára, because the customer is the recipient.
Common Mistakes
❌ Igazam vagyok ebben a kérdésben.
Incorrect English-shaped structure: the possessive form igazam combines with van, not vagyok.
✅ Igazam van ebben a kérdésben.
I am right on this issue.
❌ Szükségünk van még egy megbízható önkéntest.
Incorrect case: the required item after szükség van takes -ra/-re.
✅ Szükségünk van még egy megbízható önkéntesre.
We need one more reliable volunteer.
❌ A diákok részt vesznek a kutatási projektet.
Incorrect case: the activity complement of részt vesz is not accusative.
✅ A diákok részt vesznek a kutatási projektben.
The students are participating in the research project.
❌ A mentor jó tanács adott a pályakezdőnek.
Incorrect object form: tanács is the object of adott and needs accusative -ot.
✅ A mentor jó tanácsot adott a pályakezdőnek.
The mentor gave the early-career professional good advice.
