A core verb contributes only part of a Hungarian collocation's meaning. Vesz means “buy/take” alone, but részt vesz means “participate” and figyelembe vesz means “take into account.” Natural use depends on the whole predicate: what situation licenses it, which complement case it selects, whether the object is definite, and how its verbal modifier moves.
The forms page supplies the frame inventory and stem patterns. This page groups the expressions by communicative purpose. Unlabeled uses are neutral modern standard Hungarian.
Agreeing that someone is right
Igazad van is the ordinary way to acknowledge that the listener is right. The possessive suffix changes with the person: igazam van, igaza van, igazunk van.
Igazad van, ezt a polcot nem lehet egyetlen csavarral biztonságosan rögzíteni.
You're right; this shelf can't be secured safely with a single screw.
The expression can accept a concrete correction or an abstract argument. Qualification belongs before or around the construction:
Abban igazuk van a bírálóknak, hogy a minta túl kicsi volt.
The critics are right that the sample was too small.
Részben igazad van, de a költségek nem magyarázzák az egész különbséget.
You're partly right, but the costs don't explain the entire difference.
Abban ... hogy identifies the proposition on which the person is right. Részben prevents partial agreement from sounding like total concession. A blunt Nincs igazad is grammatically simple but socially strong; a reason or restricted point often makes disagreement more useful.
Stating a requirement or personal need
Impersonal szükség van valamire is useful in instructions, planning, and public information because it foregrounds what is required rather than who needs it.
A kerékpár javításához szükség van egy megfelelő méretű imbuszkulcsra.
An appropriately sized Allen key is needed to repair the bicycle.
Personal szükségem/szükségünk van foregrounds the person or group experiencing the need.
Szükségem van egy nyugodt órára, hogy átnézzem a szerződést.
I need a quiet hour to review the contract.
The needed noun takes -ra/-re. When an action rather than a thing is necessary, Hungarian often uses kell + infinitive: Át kell néznem a szerződést “I need to review the contract.” Converting every English need into szükség van produces heavy noun phrases.
Negative nincs szükség can reassure or reject:
Nem kell újra elküldened a fájlt; nincs szükség további másolatra.
You don't need to send the file again; no additional copy is needed. (informal singular)
The first clause denies an action requirement; the second denies a noun requirement. Nem van szükség is not the standard negative existential pattern.
Restoring physical or organizational order
Use rendet tesz valahol when somebody tidies a space or brings order to a disorganized situation.
A gyerekek vacsora előtt rendet tettek a nappaliban.
The children tidied the living room before dinner.
Az új vezető néhány hónap alatt rendet tett a nyilvántartásban.
The new manager brought the records into order within a few months.
The first is physical; the second is abstract and can imply corrected procedures, missing data, or accountability. Rendbe tesz valamit gives one object a satisfactory condition:
Még ma rendbe teszem a hibás táblázatot.
I'll fix the faulty spreadsheet today.
English put in order, tidy, and fix overlap differently. Learn rendet tesz a szobában versus rendbe teszi a táblázatot with their location/object frames. In some contexts helyrehoz “repair/remedy” is a more precise verb than broad rendbe tesz.
Taking part in an event or activity
Részt vesz profiles active inclusion in an organized event, process, survey, course, or shared activity. It does not mean merely being physically present.
Több mint száz lakos vett részt az esti fórumon.
More than a hundred residents took part in the evening forum.
A kutatásban csak azok vehettek részt, akik előzetesen beleegyeztek az adatkezelésbe.
Only those who had consented to data processing in advance could take part in the study.
The complement follows the event noun's conventional location form: a fórumon, a kutatásban, a vitában, a képzésen. A person may jelen van a fórumon “be present at the forum” without actively contributing; részt vesz presents participation.
Modals and focus separate the modifier: részt szeretnék venni, A DÉLUTÁNI ÜLÉSEN vett részt. Because részt is written separately even in neutral részt vesz, learners must track word order without inventing résztvesz.
Taking information into account
Figyelembe vesz valamit means to include a fact, constraint, preference, or risk in a decision or evaluation. It is common in everyday planning and especially useful in administrative or analytical prose.
Az útvonal tervezésekor vegyük figyelembe, hogy vasárnap ritkábban járnak a buszok!
When planning the route, let's take into account that buses run less often on Sundays.
A bizottság a döntés során figyelembe vette a környezeti és a társadalmi hatásokat is.
In reaching its decision, the committee took both environmental and social impacts into account. (formal)
The first takes a clause as the considered content; the second has definite object a ... hatásokat and definite past vette. Figyelembe vesz does not guarantee that a factor decides the outcome; it only says that the factor entered the evaluation.
In ordinary conversation, gondolj arra is, hogy... “also remember/consider that...” may sound lighter. In a formal decision, figyelembe vesz is precise and conventional.
Giving, asking for, and following advice
Tanácsot ad valakinek presents advice from adviser to recipient. Tanácsot kér valakitől reverses the direction. The advice itself can be expanded with a hogy clause or a topic phrase.
A könyvelő azt a tanácsot adta nekünk, hogy minden számláról készítsünk digitális másolatot.
The accountant advised us to make a digital copy of every invoice.
Here definite azt a tanácsot selects adta, the recipient is dative nekünk, and the hogy clause gives the advice content.
Mielőtt döntöttem, tanácsot kértem egy tapasztalt kollégától.
Before deciding, I asked an experienced colleague for advice.
To act on advice, Hungarian commonly uses megfogadja a tanácsot “take/follow the advice.” Literal English combinations such as “take advice” should not be rebuilt with bare vesz.
Megfogadtam a tanácsodat, és előbb kis léptékben próbáltam ki a módszert.
I followed your advice and first tried the method on a small scale.
Hungarian tanács is countable: egy jó tanács, három hasznos tanács. English uncountable advice does not control Hungarian number.
Receiving an answer
Választ kap describes successful receipt without necessarily foregrounding a completed, identifiable answer. The prompt takes -ra/-re, and the source takes -tól/-től.
Még nem kaptam választ a kérdésemre a biztosítótól.
I still haven't received an answer to my question from the insurance company.
Once a particular answer is active, megkapja a választ is natural:
Amint megkapom a választ, továbbítom neked az egész levelezést.
As soon as I receive the answer, I'll forward the entire correspondence to you. (informal singular)
Bare választ kapok uses the general series; definite a választ selects megkapom. The prefix often adds a bounded “receive/get hold of” reading, but reference and aspect interact rather than translate two separate English words.
A short dialogue
– Szükségünk van még valakire, aki részt vesz a pénteki egyeztetésen. – Igazad van. Megkérjem Dórát?
‘We still need someone to take part in Friday's consultation.’ ‘You're right. Shall I ask Dóra?’
– Igen. Jó tanácsokat szokott adni, és minden szempontot figyelembe vesz. – Rendben, írok neki, és szólok, ha választ kapok.
‘Yes. She tends to give good advice and considers every aspect.’ ‘All right, I'll write to her and let you know when I get an answer.’
The dialogue combines a personal need, participation, agreement, advice, consideration, and reply. Each collocation brings its own suffixes and case frame; the shared English vocabulary does not assemble them.
Informal and formal comparison
Igazad van, erre tényleg oda kell figyelnünk.
You're right; we really need to pay attention to this. (informal)
A pályázatok értékelésekor valamennyi jogosultsági feltételt figyelembe kell venni.
When evaluating applications, all eligibility conditions must be taken into account. (formal)
The informal sentence addresses a partner directly and uses odafigyel. The formal sentence uses an impersonal infinitival construction and the established administrative collocation. Formality affects setting and packaging, not the case frame or spelling.
