Hindi news writing must deliver the newest, most consequential information quickly while keeping its source visible. Headlines compress; leads identify the event and its main participants; the body supplies time, place, background, and attribution. A grammatical pattern that is normal in a headline may therefore be incomplete in the body of the same report.
“Journalistic Hindi” is not one uniform vocabulary. Broadcast, print, digital, local, business, and sports outlets make different style choices. Sanskritic समाचार, प्रशासन, वित्त, Perso-Arabic ख़बर, इलाक़ा, मौक़ा, and English टीम, बजट, अपडेट are all normal resources in different beats and editorial identities.
Headline, lead, and body do different work
A headline selects and compresses. A lead turns the compressed event into a complete, attributable proposition.
bhārī bāriś se śahar kā yātāyāt prabhāvit
City traffic affected by heavy rain. (headline)
ravivār subah huī bhārī bāriś ke kāraṇ śahar ke kaī ilāqoṃ meṃ yātāyāt prabhāvit huā.
Heavy rain on Sunday morning affected traffic in several parts of the city. (news lead)
The headline omits a recoverable copula after प्रभावित. The lead supplies eventive प्रभावित हुआ, time, and scope. Restoring है mechanically would produce a present state; choosing हुआ reports the occurrence. Headline omission is explained in detail on headlines and copula omission.
nagar nigam ke anusār do mukhya saṛkoṃ par pānī bhar gayā thā, jise dopahar tak nikāl diyā gayā.
According to the municipal corporation, water had accumulated on two main roads and was removed by noon. (news report)
The body attributes the information and uses past perfect भर गया था to place the accumulation before the later removal. The relative जिसे links the water to the passive second clause without repeating it.
The same event in three styles
Suppose a bridge has been closed for inspection after workers noticed a crack, and the administration has diverted traffic.
pul meṃ darār dikhī hai, islie rāstā band kar diyā hai aur gāṛiyā̃ dūsrī taraf se jā rahī haiṃ.
They found a crack in the bridge, so they've closed the road and vehicles are going another way. (conversational)
pul meṃ darār dikhāī dene ke bād jā̃c ke lie mārg band kar diyā gayā hai. yātāyāt ko vaikalpik mārg se bhejā jā rahā hai.
After a crack was observed in the bridge, the route was closed for inspection. Traffic is being diverted along an alternative route. (neutral formal)
pul meṃ darār, jā̃c pūrī hone tak āvāgaman band; praśāsan ne badlā yātāyāt mārg
Crack in bridge; passage closed until inspection completed, administration changes traffic route. (compressed news headline)
The conversation uses an unspecified agent and everyday Neutral writing chooses passives and the technical collocation वैकल्पिक मार्ग. The headline places the newsworthy location first, omits the copula after आवागमन बंद, and uses a simple perfective बदला in the second unit. This simple perfective is already an event predicate; it is not necessarily a present perfect with a deleted है.
Attribution is part of the grammar
News reports distinguish what the reporter observed, what an official stated, and what remains unverified.
pulis ke anusār durghaṭnā subah chah baje huī.
According to police, the accident occurred at six in the morning. (journalistic attribution)
An eyewitness said that the driver had tried to turn the vehicle. (news report)
kampanī ne dāvā kiyā hai ki koī nijī jānkārī sārvajanik nahīṃ huī, lekin iskī svatantra puṣṭi nahīṃ ho sakī hai.
The company has claimed that no private information became public, but this could not be independently verified. (journalistic)
दावा किया explicitly assigns a claim to the company; it does not endorse it. पुष्टि नहीं हो सकी states the newsroom's evidential limit. Replacing these with a bare assertion would change the report's epistemic commitment.
Quoted speech can retain the source's register, while the reporting frame remains neutral:
mantrī ne kahā, ‘ham prabhāvit parivāroṃ ko turant sahāyatā deṅge.’
The minister said, ‘We will provide immediate assistance to the affected families.’ (direct quotation in news)
In indirect speech, Hindi normally preserves the reported future rather than applying automatic English-style backshift:
Information order and reference
News leads often begin with time or place when it locates the event efficiently, but the newest event remains prominent. Later sentences can use यह घटना, इस निर्णय, उक्त क्षेत्र (marked formal), or a shorter noun phrase to maintain reference.
jaypur meṃ somvār ko āyojit baiṭhak meṃ naī jal-nīti ko maṃzūrī dī gaī. yah nīti agle vittīya varṣ se lāgū hogī.
At a meeting held in Jaipur on Monday, a new water policy was approved. The policy will take effect from the next financial year. (news report)
The first sentence answers where, when, and what. The second uses यह नीति, not conversational वो, to create an explicit written link. The passive keeps the approving body out of focus; if institutional responsibility is newsworthy, write
Numbers and named sources
Numerical claims need a source and a clear unit.
svāsthya vibhāg ke ā̃kaṛoṃ ke mutābiq zile meṃ is mahīne 138 ḍeṅgū ke māmle darj kie gae.
According to health department figures, 138 dengue cases were recorded in the district this month. (news report)
के मुताबिक़ is a normal Perso-Arabic-associated alternative to के अनुसार and is widely used in journalism. It is not automatically casual. The explicit source prevents the number from appearing as ungrounded narrator knowledge.
Vocabulary choices and outlet voice
The first is more Sanskritic/formal; the second mixes Perso-Arabic असर and English ट्रैफ़िक and may sound more conversational or digital. Both can be professional journalism. Editorial audience, beat, headline space, and regional habit determine the choice.
What sounds incoherent is not etymological mixing itself but an unexplained jump in relationship or genre—for example, a hard-news lead that suddenly addresses an official as तू, or a public-safety report that replaces familiar emergency terms with obscure coinages.
Common Mistakes
1. Extending headline omission into the report body
Incomplete in ordinary report prose: the quoted complement normally needs the copula
Officials said that the situation is under control. (news report)
2. Turning a source's claim into reporter fact
Unsupported as reporter fact when this is only the manufacturer's claim.
nirmātā kā dāvā hai ki naī davā adhikāṃś rogiyoṃ meṃ lakṣaṇ kam kartī hai.
The manufacturer claims that the new medicine reduces symptoms in most patients. (attributed)
3. Copying English tense backshift mechanically
Incorrect for a reported future plan: Hindi normally keeps future
The minister said that the scheme would take effect next month. (news report)
4. Using conversational demonstratives in edited hard news
Too conversational as a standalone hard-news sentence; the referent should be linked explicitly.
yah prastāv abhī kendr sarkār ke vicārādhīn hai.
The proposal is currently under consideration by the central government. (formal news style)
