Neutral Hindi normally uses an overt present copula with a positive nominal predicate: रीना डॉक्टर है “Reena is a doctor.” Nevertheless, present-tense copular material can be absent in headlines, labels, paired contrasts, negative main clauses, and strongly recoverable conversational fragments. These are licensed structures, not evidence that Hindi generally has no word for be. Past, future, person, honorificity, and positive finite embedding often make the copula indispensable.
The ordinary complete clause has a copula
A nominal predicate identifies or classifies the subject. Both subject and predicate nominal are normally unmarked, and a finite form of होना completes the clause.
मेरी बहन वास्तुकार है।
merī bahan vāstukār hai.
My sister is an architect.
ये दोनों महिलाएँ हमारी नई सलाहकार हैं।
ye donoṃ mahilāẽ hamārī naī salāhkār haiṃ.
These two women are our new advisers.
Present है/हैं expresses number and honorific agreement; first and familiar second person use हूँ/हो. Hindi has no obligatory article corresponding to English a: वास्तुकार है is complete.
मैं इस परियोजना का समन्वयक हूँ।
maĩ is pariyojnā kā samanvayak hū̃.
I am the coordinator of this project. (male speaker)
Before analyzing omission, learn this overt baseline through the present copula paradigm.
Headlines and compressed public text
Headlines, captions, signs, and presentation slides often omit predictable present copular material to save space and create an immediate style.
नई शिक्षा नीति सरकार की प्राथमिकता
naī śikṣā nīti sarkār kī prāthmiktā
New education policy a government priority. (headline style)
आज का विषय: शहर और पानी
āj kā viṣay: śahar aur pānī
Today’s topic: the city and water. (slide heading)
The headline is understood as नई शिक्षा नीति सरकार की प्राथमिकता है. The colon in the slide creates a label relation rather than a fully inflected sentence. Adding है converts either into ordinary prose.
This (journalistic/graphic) omission does not freely extend to a subordinate clause. A news article may headline नई नीति बड़ी चुनौती, then write विशेषज्ञों का कहना है कि नई नीति बड़ी चुनौती है in its body.
Labels, forms, and appositional identification
Administrative forms and lists frequently present paired fields without a copula:
| Compressed label | Full-clause equivalent |
|---|---|
| नाम: अनिता वर्मा | नाम अनिता वर्मा है |
| पद: क्षेत्रीय प्रबंधक | पद क्षेत्रीय प्रबंधक है |
| स्थान: सभागार | स्थान सभागार है |
नाम: फ़राह अली; पद: शोध सहायक
nām: farāh alī; pad: śodh sahāyak
Name: Farah Ali; position: research assistant. (form or directory style)
These are not clauses whose verb was forgotten; the document layout itself supplies the relation. In spoken self-introduction, use मेरा नाम फ़राह अली है.
Contrastive coordination and recoverable copula
Coordination can license omission from one conjunct when the same copula is overt or strongly recoverable in another.
रीना डॉक्टर है और उसका भाई शिक्षक।
rīnā ḍokṭar hai aur uskā bhāī śikṣak.
Reena is a doctor, and her brother a teacher.
यह समस्या तकनीकी नहीं, प्रशासनिक है।
yah samasyā taknīkī nahīṃ, praśāsnik hai.
This problem is not technical but administrative.
In the first, the second conjunct omits recoverable है. In the second, one subject and copula support two contrasted predicate adjectives; the copula appears only after the positive alternative. Parallel constituency licenses the compression.
The fully overt versions remain correct:
रीना डॉक्टर है और उसका भाई शिक्षक है।
rīnā ḍokṭar hai aur uskā bhāī śikṣak hai.
Reena is a doctor, and her brother is a teacher.
The shorter version is common in polished writing; everyday speech often retains the second है unless the contrast is crisp.
Present negative main clauses
Present nominal negation commonly omits है/हैं, especially in speech. The omission is not limited to replies, corrections, or emphatic uses: ordinary third-person main clauses such as वह डॉक्टर नहीं and वे अभी तैयार नहीं are complete in their context. The full नहीं है/नहीं हैं remains the safest edited-prose baseline and preserves explicit number or honorific information.
क्या वह डॉक्टर है? — नहीं, डॉक्टर नहीं; नर्स है।
kyā vah ḍokṭar hai? — nahīṃ, ḍokṭar nahīṃ; nars hai.
Is she a doctor? — No, not a doctor; she’s a nurse.
यह बहाना नहीं, असली वजह है।
yah bahānā nahīṃ, aslī vajah hai.
This isn’t an excuse; it’s the real reason.
वे अभी तैयार नहीं।
ve abhī taiyār nahīṃ.
They are not ready yet.
In the first examples, the missing copula is recoverable from the question or coordinated correction; the last example shows ordinary negative omission without either frame. वह डॉक्टर नहीं है and वे अभी तैयार नहीं हैं remain safer choices in edited prose when an explicitly finite clause is desired.
Negation scope matters. वह सिर्फ़ डॉक्टर नहीं है can mean “He/She is not merely a doctor” and may imply another role; वह डॉक्टर ही नहीं है strongly denies membership in the category. Omission should not obscure these focus relations.
Conversational fragments
Questions and answers can omit a copula when situation and intonation supply the missing predication.
सब तैयार? — हाँ, सब तैयार।
sab taiyār? — hā̃, sab taiyār.
Everyone ready? — Yes, everyone’s ready. (informal)
अगला स्टेशन कौन-सा? — कानपुर।
aglā sṭeśan kaun-sā? — kānpur.
Which is the next station? — Kanpur. (informal)
These (informal) utterances behave like context-supported fragments. A careful announcement uses अगला स्टेशन कानपुर है. The fact that a fragment communicates a complete proposition does not make its internal finite morphology overt.
Set formulas and aphoristic style
Proverbs, slogans, and parallel formulas often omit present copulas for rhythm and generality.
नाम बड़े और दर्शन छोटे।
nām baṛe aur darśan choṭe.
A big name, but little to show for it. (proverbial)
This fixed proverb uses parallel agreeing adjectives without overt हैं. Creative imitation can sound slogan-like or literary rather than neutral conversational Hindi, so learners should recognize the style before producing it freely.
Past and future copulas resist omission
Present/generic time is easiest to recover without overt morphology. Past था/थी/थे/थीं and future होगा/होगी/होंगे/होंगी carry information that context may not supply, so omission normally produces a fragment or changes the temporal reading.
यह इमारत पहले पुस्तकालय थी।
yah imārat pahle pustakālay thī.
This building used to be a library.
अगले साल वह विभागाध्यक्ष होंगी।
agle sāl vah vibhāgādhyakṣ hoṃgī.
Next year she will be the head of department. (respectful or plural agreement)
Dropping थी or होंगी would erase past or future anchoring. A dated heading can sometimes supply time externally, but that is document-style ellipsis, not the neutral clause grammar.
Positive finite embedding normally requires the copula
A कि complement is an independent finite agreement domain. Positive finite complements normally retain the embedded copula, while informal negative complements can extend the licensed negative omission found in main clauses.
मुझे पता है कि आयशा इस टीम की कप्तान है।
mujhe patā hai ki āyśā is ṭīm kī kaptān hai.
I know that Ayesha is the captain of this team.
उन्होंने कहा कि ये आँकड़े अंतिम नहीं हैं।
unhoṃne kahā ki ye ā̃kaṛe antim nahīṃ haiṃ.
They said that these figures are not final.
मुझे लगता है कि वह डॉक्टर नहीं।
mujhe lagtā hai ki vah ḍokṭar nahīṃ.
I think he/she is not a doctor. (informal)
The informal negative example uses licensed negative copula omission, not unrestricted zero copula. English speakers sometimes omit that, but Hindi omission of कि and omission of the embedded copula are separate issues. Positive embedded clauses and formal or carefully structured prose normally keep the appropriate copula.
Agreement becomes invisible, not irrelevant
When है/हैं is absent, its number distinction is not pronounced. Other agreeing material can still reveal the subject’s features.
दोनों बहनें तैयार, भाई अभी व्यस्त।
donoṃ bahneṃ taiyār, bhāī abhī vyast.
Both sisters ready; the brother still busy. (note or status-update style)
The fragment lacks overt copulas, but plural दोनों बहनें and singular भाई remain separate constituents. Restoring neutral prose yields दोनों बहनें तैयार हैं, भाई अभी व्यस्त है. Zero expression does not license mismatched auxiliaries when they are restored.
Common Mistakes
❌ मेरे दादाजी संगीतकार।
Incomplete as a neutral standalone positive sentence; headline-like context is absent.
✅ मेरे दादाजी संगीतकार हैं।
mere dādājī saṅgītkār haiṃ.
My grandfather is a musician. (honorific agreement)
❌ वह पुरानी हवेली कभी सराय।
Incorrect as a complete past statement — थी carries required past tense and feminine agreement.
✅ वह पुरानी हवेली कभी सराय थी।
vah purānī havelī kabhī sarāy thī.
That old mansion was once an inn.
❌ हमें लगता है कि वह पत्रकार।
Incomplete in neutral embedded prose — the finite कि clause needs है.
✅ हमें लगता है कि वह पत्रकार है।
hameṃ lagtā hai ki vah patrakār hai.
We think he/she is a journalist.
❌ रमेश एक संगीतकार को है।
Incorrect English-influenced predicate structure — a predicate nominal is unmarked, and को is not an article.
✅ रमेश संगीतकार है।
rameś saṅgītkār hai.
Ramesh is a musician.
Key Takeaways
Hindi normally keeps an overt copula in positive nominal main clauses and positive finite complements. Present copulas may be absent in headlines, labels, coordinated contrasts, ordinary negative clauses, fragments, and aphoristic formulas because grammar, context, or parallel structure supplies the relation. Informal negative embedding can share this omission, but that does not create a general zero-copula rule. Past and future forms resist omission because they carry indispensable temporal and agreement information. Zero expression makes copular agreement inaudible; it does not abolish the underlying distinctions.
