Broadcast and public-address Hindi is written to be heard once. Radio and television presenters, railway and airport announcements, event hosts, emergency messages, and public speeches therefore favor explicit reference, short information units, audible parallelism, and clear audience address. Their language may be formal, but it cannot rely on a reader's ability to scan backward through a dense sentence.
This is a medium-sensitive register, not one accent or a ban on regional identity. National and regional broadcasters differ, and public speakers adapt to their audiences. The shared principle is recoverability through the ear.
Give the listener a frame first
A public announcement often begins by identifying the audience or the type of message.
यात्री कृपया ध्यान दें। जयपुर जाने वाली गाड़ी प्लेटफ़ॉर्म चार पर आएगी।
yātrī kripyā dhyān deṃ. jaypur jāne vālī gāṛī pleṭform cār par āegī.
Passengers, please note. The train to Jaipur will arrive at platform four. (public announcement)
श्रोताओ, अब आप सुनेंगे आज के प्रमुख समाचार।
śrotāo, ab āp suneṅge āj ke pramukh samācār.
Listeners, you will now hear today's main news. (formal broadcast)
The vocative श्रोताओ explicitly opens a channel to a collective audience. यात्री functions as a generic plural role label, and ध्यान दें uses plural/honorific agreement. Public address normally avoids तुम/तू because the audience is heterogeneous and no intimate relationship is shared.
Broadcast framing can instead name the service and include the audience through आप:
नमस्कार। आप सुन रहे हैं शाम का विशेष कार्यक्रम।
namaskār. āp sun rahe haiṃ śām kā viśeṣ kāryakram.
Hello. You are listening to the evening special. (broadcast opening)
Here singular or plural listeners receive honorific plural सुन रहे हैं. A female-only addressee is not being described; generic public आप conventionally takes plural masculine रहे हैं for a mixed or unspecified audience.
The same message in three media styles
Suppose a program will start fifteen minutes late because of a technical problem.
थोड़ी तकनीकी दिक़्क़त है, तो कार्यक्रम पंद्रह मिनट देर से शुरू होगा।
thoṛī taknīkī diqqat hai, to kāryakram pandrah minaṭ der se śurū hogā.
There's a small technical problem, so the program will start fifteen minutes late. (conversational)
तकनीकी समस्या के कारण कार्यक्रम निर्धारित समय से पंद्रह मिनट देर से आरंभ होगा।
taknīkī samasyā ke kāraṇ kāryakram nirdhārit samay se pandrah minaṭ der se āraṃbh hogā.
Because of a technical problem, the program will begin fifteen minutes later than scheduled. (neutral formal writing)
कृपया ध्यान दें। तकनीकी कारणों से कार्यक्रम के आरंभ में पंद्रह मिनट की देरी होगी। असुविधा के लिए हमें खेद है।
kripyā dhyān deṃ. taknīkī kāraṇoṃ se kāryakram ke āraṃbh meṃ pandrah minaṭ kī derī hogī. asuvidhā ke lie hameṃ khed hai.
May we have your attention, please. For technical reasons, the program will begin fifteen minutes late. We regret the inconvenience. (public-address formal)
The conversation uses Perso-Arabic दिक़्क़त and the discourse connector तो. Neutral writing uses a single complete causal sentence. The announcement divides the content into three audible units: attention signal, operational fact, apology. It chooses देरी होगी, which packages the delay as the key new event, and repeats enough context that a distracted listener can re-enter the message.
No vocabulary stratum alone defines the level. कार्यक्रम is Sanskritic, खेद Sanskritic/formal, and तकनीकी a modern learned term; in other settings, Perso-Arabic ऐलान or English प्रोग्राम may be entirely natural. Audience, institution, and regional media tradition shape the choice.
Instructions: respectful, brief, and actionable
Public instructions commonly use कृपया + plural/honorific imperative, a role noun plus से अनुरोध है कि, or an impersonal X किया जाए.
कृपया पीली रेखा के पीछे खड़े रहें।
kripyā pīlī rekhā ke pīche khaṛe raheṃ.
Please remain behind the yellow line. (public instruction)
सभी आगंतुकों से अनुरोध है कि वे अपने फ़ोन बंद कर दें।
sabhī āgantukoṃ se anurodh hai ki ve apne fon band kar deṃ.
All visitors are requested to switch off their phones. (formal public announcement)
The first directly addresses listeners through honorific रहें. The second names the audience and supplies written-form वे inside the complement. In a live venue, speakers may omit वे—अनुरोध है कि अपने फ़ोन बंद कर दें—because the addressee is obvious; retaining it makes a prerecorded or multilingual environment easier to follow.
Emergency wording must prioritize action over ceremony:
कृपया शांत रहें और निकटतम निकास की ओर बढ़ें। लिफ़्ट का उपयोग न करें।
kripyā śānt raheṃ aur nikaṭtam nikās kī or baṛheṃ. lifṭ kā upyog na kareṃ.
Please remain calm and proceed to the nearest exit. Do not use the lift. (emergency announcement)
The negative न करें is formal and direct. A long apology or heavily nominalized explanation before the instruction would delay the action listeners need.
Repetition is functional, not clumsy
Written prose can use a pronoun whose referent lies several lines earlier. Audio should repeat a route, time, or danger when a mistaken referent would matter.
दिल्ली जाने वाली बस अब द्वार संख्या छह से चलेगी। फिर से सुनिए: दिल्ली जाने वाली बस द्वार संख्या छह से चलेगी।
dillī jāne vālī bas ab dvār saṅkhyā chah se calegī. phir se sunie: dillī jāne vālī bas dvār saṅkhyā chah se calegī.
The bus to Delhi will now depart from gate six. Again: the bus to Delhi will depart from gate six. (public announcement)
Repeating दिल्ली जाने वाली बस is better than replacing it with वह, because late-arriving listeners may not know the antecedent. फिर से सुनिए explicitly resets attention.
Numbers require audible grouping. A presenter can say शाम चार बजकर पंद्रह मिनट पर rather than compressing the time to a visually clear but aurally ambiguous string.
अगला समाचार बुलेटिन शाम चार बजकर पंद्रह मिनट पर प्रसारित होगा।
aglā samācār buleṭin śām cār bajkar pandrah minaṭ par prasārit hogā.
The next news bulletin will be broadcast at 4:15 p.m. (formal broadcast)
Sentence architecture for breath and memory
Public speech benefits from parallel clauses and forward-moving syntax. A long genitive chain should be unpacked before its final head noun.
आज हम तीन विषयों पर बात करेंगे: पानी की उपलब्धता, सार्वजनिक परिवहन और कचरे का प्रबंधन।
āj ham tīn viṣayoṃ par bāt kareṅge: pānī kī upalabdhatā, sārvajanik parivahan aur kacre kā prabandhan.
Today we will discuss three topics: water availability, public transport, and waste management. (formal presentation)
The numeral तीन gives listeners a prospective frame. Parallel noun phrases then fill its three slots. In academic writing, the same material might be embedded in a longer sentence; in speech, announcing the structure lowers memory load.
A presenter can use active voice to maintain a human relationship:
हम आपको मौसम की ताज़ा जानकारी देते रहेंगे।
ham āpko mausam kī tāzā jānkārī dete raheṅge.
We will keep bringing you the latest weather information. (broadcast)
The Perso-Arabic ताज़ा is idiomatic in broadcasting. Replacing it with a less familiar Sanskritic equivalent solely to sound formal would change the outlet's voice without improving accuracy.
For careful-versus-everyday pronunciation, see careful formal speech and everyday reductions. Broadcast delivery often keeps fuller रहा/रही/रहे and clear word boundaries, but natural rhythm remains essential; spelling every inherent schwa aloud is not “more formal.”
Ceremonial address and stance
देवियो और सज्जनो (formal/ceremonial) is conventional for a mixed public audience. साथियो can create solidarity in political, union, or movement speech; it is not a neutral substitute in every conference. माननीय precedes an office-holder or dignitary in ceremonial protocol, but multiplying titles can sound deferential or partisan rather than merely formal.
देवियो और सज्जनो, इस वार्षिक समारोह में आप सभी का स्वागत है।
deviyo aur sajjano, is vārṣik samāroh meṃ āp sabhī kā svāgat hai.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to this annual ceremony. (formal ceremonial address)
The vocatives are plural oblique/vocative forms. आप सभी का स्वागत है addresses the collective respectfully without requiring a gendered participle.
Common Mistakes
1. Using familiar agreement for an unknown public audience
❌ यात्री, अपना टिकट तैयार रखो।
Socially miscalibrated for a general announcement: रखो uses familiar तुम-level agreement.
✅ यात्री कृपया अपने टिकट तैयार रखें।
yātrī kripyā apne ṭikaṭ taiyār rakheṃ.
Passengers, please keep your tickets ready. (public announcement)
2. Reading a dense written sentence unchanged
❌ तकनीकी कारणों से निर्धारित समयानुसार आयोजित किए जाने वाले कार्यक्रम के आरंभ में विलंब होने की संभावना सूचित की जाती है।
Overloaded for one-pass listening: the operational fact arrives too late.
✅ तकनीकी कारणों से कार्यक्रम देर से शुरू हो सकता है। अधिक जानकारी मिलते ही हम आपको बताएँगे।
taknīkī kāraṇoṃ se kāryakram der se śurū ho saktā hai. adhik jānkārī milte hī ham āpko batāẽge.
The program may start late for technical reasons. We will update you as soon as we receive more information. (clear public address)
3. Using a pronoun after listeners may have missed its antecedent
❌ वह अब द्वार पाँच से जाएगी।
Unclear in a station announcement when several trains or buses have just been mentioned.
✅ लखनऊ जाने वाली बस अब द्वार पाँच से चलेगी।
lakhnau jāne vālī bas ab dvār pā̃c se calegī.
The bus to Lucknow will now leave from gate five. (public announcement)
4. Treating ceremonial vocabulary as universally formal
❌ देवियो और सज्जनो, अपना पासवर्ड डालिए।
An unnecessary ceremonial opening for a routine interface instruction.
✅ अपना पासवर्ड दर्ज करें।
apnā pāsvard darj kareṃ.
Enter your password. (neutral formal instruction)
Key Takeaways
- Broadcast Hindi is designed for one-pass listening: frame the message, shorten information units, and repeat safety-critical referents.
- Public आप and plural/honorific imperatives build a respectful relationship with an unknown audience.
- Announcements, news presentation, emergency speech, and ceremony use different formulas.
- Vocabulary origin does not fix register; service, audience, region, and institutional voice do.
- Careful delivery preserves clarity without pronouncing deleted schwas or erasing all regional identity.
