Formal Hindi often makes one proposition finite and packages surrounding events as nominalizations, participial modifiers, or converbs. This creates a hierarchy: the finite predicate carries the main assertion and TAM, while non-finite clauses identify participants, state prerequisites, or compress procedural steps.
Compression is not automatically better writing. It works when subject control, event order, and logical relations remain recoverable. When responsibility, modality, or chronology matters, a finite clause is usually clearer. Formal style is therefore a matter of controlled information density, not merely Sanskritized vocabulary.
Four major kinds of compression
| Function | Productive form | Example fragment |
|---|---|---|
| event as a noun-like constituent | oblique infinitive + postposition | आवेदन मिलने पर |
| noun identification | participial modifier | समिति द्वारा चुने गए उम्मीदवार |
| shared-agent event chain | -कर/-करके converb | अभिलेख जाँचकर |
| simultaneous/evaluative frame | -ते हुए | इन तथ्यों को देखते हुए |
These forms are not interchangeable. Their endings tell the reader whether the phrase agrees with a noun, shares a controller, or treats an event as a postpositional complement.
Oblique infinitives turn events into constituents
An infinitive in -ना behaves partly like a masculine verbal noun. Before a postposition it takes oblique -ने: होने पर, करने के बाद, बढ़ने से, सुनने के लिए.
आवेदन प्राप्त होने पर उम्मीदवार को ईमेल भेजा जाएगा।
āvedan prāpt hone par ummīdvār ko īmel bhejā jāegā.
An email will be sent to the applicant when the application is received. (formal)
दस्तावेज़ों की जाँच पूरी करने के बाद अधिकारी निर्णय दर्ज करेगा।
dastāvezoṃ kī jā̃c pūrī karne ke bād adhikārī nirṇay darj karegā.
After completing the document review, the officer will record the decision. (formal)
The first backgrounds a received event whose agent is irrelevant. In the second, the understood subject of पूरी करने is normally अधिकारी, the matrix subject. A different subject can be made local with genitive marking:
विशेषज्ञों के रिपोर्ट जमा करने के बाद समिति अंतिम बैठक करेगी।
viśeṣagyoṃ ke riporṭ jamā karne ke bād samiti antim baiṭhak karegī.
After the experts submit their report, the committee will hold its final meeting. (formal)
English uses finite the experts submit. Hindi विशेषज्ञों के ... करने के बाद packages that event as a noun-like complement of के बाद. This is one of the safest ways to preserve a subject change in compressed prose.
Participial modifiers compress relative clauses
An agreeing participial phrase can identify a noun without a finite relative clause.
पिछले महीने स्वीकृत की गई योजनाओं की सूची मंत्रालय ने प्रकाशित कर दी है।
pichle mahīne svīkrit kī gaī yojnāoṃ kī sūcī mantrālay ne prakāśit kar dī hai.
The ministry has published the list of plans approved last month. (formal)
Feminine plural oblique योजनाओं की controls की गई inside the modifier. Matrix प्रकाशित कर दी है has its own structure and does not control that agreement.
The finite alternative is less dense and can assert the approval separately:
योजनाएँ पिछले महीने स्वीकृत की गई थीं। मंत्रालय ने उनकी सूची प्रकाशित कर दी है।
yojnāẽ pichle mahīne svīkrit kī gaī thīṃ. mantrālay ne unkī sūcī prakāśit kar dī hai.
The plans were approved last month. The ministry has published their list. (formal)
The compressed form makes approval identifying background. The two-sentence form gives approval independent discourse weight. Agreement inside such modifiers is treated in agreement inside participial modifiers.
Formal headlines, notices, and reports sometimes omit material that a conversation would repeat, but omission is licensed only when the relation stays recoverable. A participial modifier still needs a clear head noun, and a nominalized event still needs an interpretable subject. Density does not cancel ordinary syntax; it increases the cost of every unclear attachment.
Converbs package procedural sequences
An invariant -कर/-करके form is natural when one agent performs consecutive or integrated actions.
जाँच दल ने नमूने एकत्र कर उन्हें प्रमाणित प्रयोगशाला भेज दिया।
jā̃c dal ne namūne ekatra kar unheṃ pramāṇit prayogśālā bhej diyā.
The inspection team collected the samples and sent them to an accredited laboratory. (formal)
जाँच दल ने controls both collecting and sending. Only भेज दिया carries the clause's finite perfective morphology. Compact bare कर after a conjunct predicate such as एकत्र करना is common in edited formal prose.
विभाग ने सभी आपत्तियों पर विचार करके संशोधित आदेश जारी किया।
vibhāg ne sabhī āpattiyoṃ par vicār karke saṃśodhit ādeś jārī kiyā.
After considering all the objections, the department issued a revised order. (formal)
Expanded coordination makes the two assertions more independent:
विभाग ने सभी आपत्तियों पर विचार किया और फिर संशोधित आदेश जारी किया।
vibhāg ne sabhī āpattiyoṃ par vicār kiyā aur phir saṃśodhit ādeś jārī kiyā.
The department considered all the objections and then issued a revised order. (formal)
Do not use this compression if the agent changes. The same-subject constraint still applies in administrative and academic prose.
Detached evaluative frames with -ते हुए
Formal Hindi often uses expressions such as इन तथ्यों को देखते हुए “in view of these facts,” परिस्थितियों को ध्यान में रखते हुए “taking the circumstances into account,” and यह मानते हुए कि “assuming that.” The neutral adverbial ending is conventionally invariant.
उपलब्ध साक्ष्यों को देखते हुए, न्यायालय ने अगली सुनवाई तक आदेश स्थगित रखा।
uplabdh sākṣyoṃ ko dekhte hue, nyāyālay ne aglī sunvāī tak ādeś sthagit rakhā.
In view of the available evidence, the court kept the order suspended until the next hearing. (formal/legal)
The court is understood as the evaluator and also controls रखा. The phrase does not agree with masculine न्यायालय or plural साक्ष्यों; it is an invariant clause-level frame.
यह मानते हुए कि आँकड़े विश्वसनीय हैं, शोध दल ने विश्लेषण आगे बढ़ाया।
yah mānte hue ki ā̃kaṛe viśvasnīya haiṃ, śodh dal ne viśleṣaṇ āge baṛhāyā.
Assuming that the data were reliable, the research team proceeded with the analysis. (academic)
The complementizer कि introduces the content of the assumption. If the person making the assumption is not the research team, this sentence misassigns control; name the evaluator or use a finite passive/impersonal clause.
Same-subject and different-subject strategies
Compare two ways of relating a review to a decision:
प्रस्ताव की समीक्षा करके निदेशक ने दो बदलाव सुझाए।
prastāv kī samīkṣā karke nideśak ne do badlāv sujhāe.
After reviewing the proposal, the director suggested two changes. (formal)
The director performs both events. If an external panel reviews the proposal, name it inside a nominalized clause:
बाहरी समिति के प्रस्ताव की समीक्षा करने के बाद निदेशक ने दो बदलाव सुझाए।
bāhrī samiti ke prastāv kī samīkṣā karne ke bād nideśak ne do badlāv sujhāe.
After the external committee reviewed the proposal, the director suggested two changes. (formal)
The difference is not whether English uses after reviewing. Hindi makes controller continuity part of the grammatical choice: करके invites one controller, while समिति के ... करने के बाद supplies its own.
Relative time, not independent tense
Non-finite clauses ordinarily receive their temporal interpretation from the main predicate and lexical aspect.
शर्तें पूरी होने पर अनुदान जारी किया जाएगा।
śarteṃ pūrī hone par anudān jārī kiyā jāegā.
The grant will be released when the conditions have been met. (formal)
The same होने पर can occur with a past main clause: शर्तें पूरी होने पर अनुदान जारी किया गया. It does not itself spell out future or past. If the subordinate event needs independent possibility, obligation, or counterfactuality, use a finite clause.
One compressed sentence, expanded
निर्धारित अवधि में प्राप्त आवेदनों की प्रारंभिक जाँच पूरी कर, पात्र पाए गए उम्मीदवारों को साक्षात्कार हेतु आमंत्रित किया जाएगा।
nirdhārit avadhi meṃ prāpt āvedanoṃ kī prārambhik jā̃c pūrī kar, pātra pāe gae ummīdvāroṃ ko sākṣātkār hetu āmantrit kiyā jāegā.
After an initial review of applications received within the prescribed period, candidates found eligible will be invited for interview. (formal administrative)
This sentence contains an attributive learned participle प्राप्त, an invariant converb पूरी कर, an agreeing passive modifier पात्र पाए गए, and a finite passive आमंत्रित किया जाएगा. Its procedural agent is institutionally recoverable but unexpressed.
Expanded prose makes every relation overt:
कार्यालय निर्धारित अवधि में आवेदन प्राप्त करेगा। चयन दल उनकी प्रारंभिक जाँच पूरी करेगा। जो उम्मीदवार पात्र पाए जाएँगे, उन्हें साक्षात्कार के लिए आमंत्रित किया जाएगा।
kāryālay nirdhārit avadhi meṃ āvedan prāpt karegā. cayan dal unkī prārambhik jā̃c pūrī karegā. jo ummīdvār pātra pāe jāẽge, unheṃ sākṣātkār ke lie āmantrit kiyā jāegā.
The office will receive applications during the prescribed period. The selection team will complete an initial review. Candidates who are found eligible will be invited for interview. (formal)
The expansion is longer but clarifies who receives and reviews the applications. Use it when institutional accountability outweighs compactness.
Common Mistakes
1. Leaving the infinitive direct before a postposition
❌ आवेदन मिलना पर रसीद बनेगी।
Incorrect — the infinitive is oblique before पर.
✅ आवेदन मिलने पर रसीद तैयार होगी।
āvedan milne par rasīd taiyār hogī.
A receipt will be generated when the application is received. (formal)
2. Switching agent inside a converb chain
❌ विशेषज्ञों ने रिपोर्ट तैयार करके मंत्रालय ने उसे प्रकाशित किया।
Incorrect — करके cannot independently keep विशेषज्ञों as its subject and then switch to मंत्रालय.
✅ विशेषज्ञों ने रिपोर्ट तैयार की और मंत्रालय ने उसे प्रकाशित किया।
viśeṣagyoṃ ne riporṭ taiyār kī aur mantrālay ne use prakāśit kiyā.
The experts prepared the report, and the ministry published it. (formal)
3. Freezing an agreeing participial modifier
❌ पिछले वर्ष चुना गई परियोजनाएँ अब शुरू होंगी।
Incorrect — feminine plural परियोजनाएँ requires चुनी गई.
✅ पिछले वर्ष चुनी गई परियोजनाएँ अब शुरू होंगी।
pichle varṣ cunī gaī pariyojnāẽ ab śurū hoṅgī.
The projects selected last year will now begin. (formal)
4. Making neutral adverbial -ते हुए agree
❌ इन परिस्थितियों को देखती हुई, समिति ने समय-सीमा बढ़ाई।
Incorrect for the neutral clause-level frame — use invariant देखते हुए.
✅ इन परिस्थितियों को देखते हुए, समिति ने समय-सीमा बढ़ाई।
in paristhitiyoṃ ko dekhte hue, samiti ne samay-sīmā baṛhāī.
In view of these circumstances, the committee extended the deadline. (formal)
5. Importing an English gerund where Hindi needs a nominalized clause
❌ विशेषज्ञ रिपोर्ट जमा करके समिति बैठक करेगी।
Incorrect — this wrongly makes the committee the controller of जमा करके.
✅ विशेषज्ञ के रिपोर्ट जमा करने के बाद समिति बैठक करेगी।
viśeṣagya ke riporṭ jamā karne ke bād samiti baiṭhak karegī.
After the expert submits the report, the committee will meet. (formal)
Key Takeaways
- Formal Hindi ranks information: one finite assertion can carry several non-finite background relations.
- -ने + postposition nominalizes an event; genitive marking can give it a distinct subject.
- Participial modifiers agree with their head, while -कर/-करके and neutral adverbial -ते हुए are invariant.
- Converbs normally keep one controller; nominalized or finite clauses handle subject changes.
- Expand compressed prose when readers need independent TAM, modality, or explicit institutional responsibility.
