Many Hindi non-finite forms omit their subject. Control is the grammatical and semantic process by which a reader identifies that missing participant. A modifier dangles when the surrounding clause supplies no participant that can plausibly control it; control is ambiguous when two plausible participants compete.
Hindi is often described as allowing “free word order,” but word order does not rescue unclear control. The decisive questions are structural: is the phrase an attributive modifier with a local head, a -कर/-करके or -ते हुए adverbial controlled by the matrix event, or a nominalized clause able to name its own genitive subject?
Start with the form, not the English translation
| Non-finite form | Default controller source | Reliable diagnostic |
|---|---|---|
| -कर/-करके | semantic actor/experiencer of the matrix predicate | one participant can perform both events |
| adverbial -ते हुए | matrix participant | secondary event overlaps with matrix event |
| attributive/depictive participle | the noun it modifies | visible agreement points to the head |
| -ने पर/-ने के बाद | shared participant, or an explicitly genitive local subject | the event behaves as a postpositional nominal |
| -ते ही absolute frame | matrix participant or explicitly genitive local subject | the phrase marks a trigger boundary |
English -ing can translate several rows. Do not let that shared translation erase Hindi distinctions.
A useful editing test is to paraphrase each non-finite phrase as a finite clause. If फ़ाइल पढ़कर is intended as “after Seema read the file,” Seema must be licensed as its controller. If the paraphrase instead begins “after Ravi read the file,” but the matrix subject is Seema, the compressed form has changed the actor and needs repair.
Clear matrix control
फ़ाइल ध्यान से पढ़कर सीमा ने तीन विरोधाभास चिन्हित किए।
fāil dhyān se paṛhkar sīmā ne tīn virodhābhās cihnit kie.
After reading the file carefully, Seema identified three contradictions.
Ergative सीमा ने is the matrix agent and the understood reader. The controller need not be an unmarked nominative.
पुरानी तस्वीरें देखते हुए मुझे अपने स्कूल की याद आई।
purānī tasvīreṃ dekhte hue mujhe apne skūl kī yād āī.
While looking at the old photographs, I remembered my school.
Dative experiencer मुझे controls looking, while grammatical याद heads the matrix expression. Control follows the human experiencer, not a simplistic “first unmarked noun” rule.
Local control inside a noun phrase
An attributive participle gets its controller from the noun it modifies, even when the matrix subject is different.
मेज़ पर रखी हुई फ़ाइल को निदेशक ने अपने सहायक के पास भेज दिया।
mez par rakhī huī fāil ko nideśak ne apne sahāyak ke pās bhej diyā.
The director sent the file lying on the table to his assistant.
Feminine फ़ाइल controls रखी हुई; निदेशक ने controls भेज दिया. Agreement makes the two domains visible.
An agreeing depictive can likewise point to a matrix participant:
नंदिता घबराई हुई स्वागत-कक्ष में पहुँची।
nanditā ghabrāī huī svāgat-kakṣ meṃ pahũcī.
Nandita arrived at reception looking anxious.
Feminine घबराई हुई depicts Nandita. The neutral invariant adverbial घबराते हुए would instead foreground an unfolding circumstance and is less natural for the resulting state intended here. Agreement is therefore evidence about structure, not decorative concord.
What a dangling modifier looks like
रिपोर्ट का आख़िरी अध्याय पढ़ते हुए कई सवाल उठे।
riporṭ kā āxirī adhyāy paṛhte hue kaī savāl uṭhe.
While the last chapter of the report was being read, several questions arose. (potentially dangling)
Who read the chapter? सवाल cannot. In a conversation with an already salient group of readers, the controller may be pragmatically recoverable, but isolated formal prose should not force the reader to invent it. Name the experiencer:
रिपोर्ट का आख़िरी अध्याय पढ़ते हुए समिति के सदस्यों के मन में कई सवाल उठे।
riporṭ kā āxirī adhyāy paṛhte hue samiti ke sadasyoṃ ke man meṃ kaī savāl uṭhe.
While reading the last chapter of the report, the committee members had several questions.
Alternatively, use an impersonal nominalized frame when the identity of the reader genuinely does not matter: आख़िरी अध्याय पढ़ने पर कई सवाल उठते हैं.
Ambiguity with multiple animate participants
The closest noun is not automatically the controller.
रवि से बात करके मोहन ने सीमा को बुलाया।
ravi se bāt karke mohan ne sīmā ko bulāyā.
After speaking with Ravi, Mohan called Seema over.
Matrix agent मोहन ने controls बात करके. रवि से is the conversation partner, despite standing next to the converb. If Ravi spoke and Mohan called, coordination is required:
रवि ने मोहन से बात की, और फिर मोहन ने सीमा को बुलाया।
ravi ne mohan se bāt kī, aur phir mohan ne sīmā ko bulāyā.
Ravi spoke with Mohan, and then Mohan called Seema over.
True ambiguity often arises in directive and perception structures:
प्रबंधक ने सहायक को दस्तावेज़ जाँचकर जवाब भेजने को कहा।
prabandhak ne sahāyak ko dastāvez jā̃ckar javāb bhejne ko kahā.
The manager told the assistant to check the document and send a reply.
The intended controller is normally the assistant because जवाब भेजने is what the assistant is told to do, and जाँचकर is integrated with that infinitival event. In a context where the manager checks the document but the assistant sends the reply, the sentence is misleading. Split the responsibilities:
प्रबंधक ने दस्तावेज़ जाँचा और सहायक से जवाब भेजने को कहा।
prabandhak ne dastāvez jā̃cā aur sahāyak se javāb bhejne ko kahā.
The manager checked the document and told the assistant to send a reply.
Passive clauses and implicit agents
Hindi institutional passives can support an implicit shared agent:
सभी प्रमाण जाँचकर अंतिम सूची जारी की गई।
sabhī pramāṇ jā̃ckar antim sūcī jārī kī gaī.
After all the evidence was checked, the final list was issued. (formal)
An institutionally understood body checks the evidence and issues the list. The sentence is acceptable when one responsible body is salient. It becomes defective if the context requires two different hidden agents.
सभी प्रमाण जाँचने के बाद स्वतंत्र समिति ने अंतिम सूची की पुष्टि की।
sabhī pramāṇ jā̃cne ke bād svatantra samiti ne antim sūcī kī puṣṭi kī.
After reviewing all the evidence, the independent committee confirmed the final list. (formal)
This version identifies the reviewer overtly. If one office checked the evidence and another confirmed the list, say so with two finite clauses or put the first office in a genitive nominalized clause.
Repairing a genuine subject change
Hindi offers three robust repairs:
- Finite coordination: X did A, and Y did B.
- Finite subordination: when/because X did A, Y did B.
- A local subject in a nominalized or absolute frame: X's doing A + postposition, Y did B.
मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचते ही बस निकल गई।
mere sṭeśan pahũcte hī bas nikal gaī.
The bus left as soon as I reached the station.
मेरे स्टेशन पहुँचने से पहले बस निकल गई थी।
mere sṭeśan pahũcne se pahle bas nikal gaī thī.
The bus had left before I reached the station.
Both phrases have local genitive मेरे, while feminine बस controls the finite predicates. The first selects an immediate boundary; the second locates departure before the arrival event. The broader system is explained under absolute and detached participial phrases.
Finite versus non-finite packaging
जब निरीक्षक नमूने ले रहा था, तब प्रयोगशाला ने पुरानी रिपोर्ट भेजी।
jab nirīkṣak namūne le rahā thā, tab prayogśālā ne purānī riporṭ bhejī.
While the inspector was taking samples, the laboratory sent the old report. (formal)
The two subjects and two simultaneous events are explicit. Compressing the first as नमूने लेते हुए प्रयोगशाला ने... would wrongly make the laboratory the sampler. Finite subordination is not wordier clutter here; it is the syntax that preserves two agents.
This is also why a passive translation can be misleading. English “while samples were being taken” suppresses an agent, but Hindi नमूने लेते हुए does not become passive merely because English does. To keep the sampler unnamed, use a genuinely passive finite clause or an event nominalization whose interpretation is impersonal in context.
By contrast, a same-subject pair compresses naturally:
नमूने लेते हुए निरीक्षक ने हर बोतल पर तारीख़ लिखी।
namūne lete hue nirīkṣak ne har botal par tārīx likhī.
While taking samples, the inspector wrote the date on every bottle. (formal)
A compressed written sentence and its expansion
उपलब्ध अभिलेखों की जाँच कर और संबंधित पक्षों से स्पष्टीकरण माँगकर, अनुशासन समिति ने शिकायत निराधार पाई।
uplabdh abhilekhoṃ kī jā̃c kar aur sambandhit pakṣoṃ se spaṣṭīkaraṇ mā̃gkar, anuśāsan samiti ne śikāyat nirādhār pāī.
After examining the available records and seeking clarification from the parties concerned, the disciplinary committee found the complaint baseless. (formal)
Both converbs have the overt controller अनुशासन समिति ने. An expanded version can foreground procedure:
अनुशासन समिति ने पहले उपलब्ध अभिलेखों की जाँच की। फिर उसने संबंधित पक्षों से स्पष्टीकरण माँगा। इन चरणों के बाद समिति ने शिकायत को निराधार पाया।
anuśāsan samiti ne pahle uplabdh abhilekhoṃ kī jā̃c kī. phir usne sambandhit pakṣoṃ se spaṣṭīkaraṇ mā̃gā. in caraṇoṃ ke bād samiti ne śikāyat ko nirādhār pāyā.
The disciplinary committee first examined the available records. It then sought clarification from the parties concerned. After these steps, it found the complaint baseless. (formal)
The expansion adds discourse stages; it does not change the controller.
Common Mistakes
1. Letting an inanimate result control a human action
❌ आवेदन पढ़कर त्रुटि स्पष्ट हो गई।
Incorrect without a recoverable reader — the error cannot read the application.
✅ आवेदन पढ़ने पर त्रुटि स्पष्ट हो गई।
āvedan paṛhne par truṭi spaṣṭ ho gaī.
On reading the application, the error became clear.
2. Choosing the nearest animate noun as controller
❌ सीमा से मिलकर रवि ने मोहन को संदेश दिया, यानी सीमा ने संदेश दिया।
Incorrect interpretation — रवि ने controls both meeting and giving.
✅ सीमा से मिलकर रवि ने मोहन को संदेश दिया।
sīmā se milkar ravi ne mohan ko sandeś diyā.
After meeting Seema, Ravi gave Mohan the message.
3. Hiding a subject change under करके
❌ डॉक्टर ने मरीज़ की जाँच करके नर्स ने दवा दे दी।
Incorrect — the converb cannot keep डॉक्टर as controller when the matrix agent is नर्स.
✅ डॉक्टर ने मरीज़ की जाँच की और नर्स ने दवा दे दी।
ḍokṭar ne marīz kī jā̃c kī aur nars ne davā de dī.
The doctor examined the patient, and the nurse gave the medicine.
4. Using an agreeing depictive as an invariant adverbial hybrid
❌ नंदिता घबराई हुए कमरे में आई।
Incorrect hybrid — feminine depictive requires घबराई हुई; neutral adverbial would be घबराते हुए.
✅ नंदिता घबराई हुई कमरे में आई।
nanditā ghabrāī huī kamre meṃ āī.
Nandita entered the room looking anxious.
5. Omitting the local genitive subject
❌ मैं निकलते ही बारिश शुरू हो गई।
Incorrect for different subjects — use मेरे to mean 'as soon as I left.'
✅ मेरे निकलते ही बारिश शुरू हो गई।
mere nikalte hī bāriś śurū ho gaī.
It began to rain as soon as I left.
Key Takeaways
- Control follows construction type and semantic role, not simple proximity or English word order.
- -कर/-करके and neutral adverbial -ते हुए normally take a matrix controller.
- Attributive and depictive agreement identifies a local noun-oriented controller.
- Nominalized -ने + postposition and absolute -ते ही can host an explicit genitive subject.
- When two agents matter, finite clauses are often the clearest and most accurate solution.
