After a bare lexical stem, vector देना typically presents a result as released into the situation, made available to another participant, or decisively brought about. Vector लेना typically presents it as secured around the agent: completed for the agent's purposes, brought under control, or taken care of. Compare पता लिख दिया “wrote the address down for someone / supplied it” with पता लिख लिया “wrote the address down for one's own use.”
This is a difference of construal, not a literal choice between “give” and “take.” English finish, go ahead and, and get something done can correspond to either vector—or to neither one. Complete formation and inflection belong on compound verbs: lexical stem plus vector; this page teaches how speakers choose between these two compatible viewpoints.
A compact decision tree
- Is the lexical event's result directed or made available outward? Prefer
- Is the result secured for, incorporated by, or managed around the agent? Prefer
- Is there an explicit beneficiary, recipient, audience, or affected outsider? That favors देना, but does not mechanically require it.
- Does the context emphasize preparation, convenience, protection, or completion before a next step? That favors
- Could both vectors fit the lexical stem? Identify who gains control of the result and where the consequence is presented as going.
- Is the pairing conventional? Do not construct a compound solely from this semantic sketch. Hindi vectors are productive but lexically selective.
Minimal pairs: the same event, a different center
With भरना “fill,” both vectors are natural, but they answer different practical questions:
मैंने आपके लिए फ़ॉर्म भर दिया।
maĩne āpke lie form bhar diyā.
I filled out the form for you. (respectful addressee; result supplied outward)
maĩne apnā form bhar liyā.
I filled out my form and got it taken care of. (result secured for myself)
The possessors make the contrast easy to hear, but they do not create it by themselves. मैंने अपना फ़ॉर्म भर दिया is also possible if the speaker emphasizes submitting, releasing, or decisively finishing the form; आपका फ़ॉर्म भर लिया can be natural for someone who has taken responsibility for your task. The vector presents a viewpoint rather than merely agreeing with a pronoun.
The same contrast appears with food preparation:
मैंने मेहमानों के लिए चाय बना दी।
maĩne mehmānoṃ ke lie cāy banā dī.
I made tea for the guests. (the result is available to them)
maĩne apne lie cāy banā lī.
I made myself some tea. (the result is for my own use)
English may use made in both sentences. The Hindi choice encodes how the completed tea-making is situated among the participants. This orientation is more reliable than translating the vector separately.
Outward availability with देना
देना is especially frequent with communication, transfer, access, removal, and changes whose consequences are released into a wider situation. An overt recipient makes the profile clear:
कृपया नई समय-सारणी सबको भेज दीजिए।
kripyā naī samay-sāriṇī sabko bhej dījie.
Please send the new timetable to everyone. (polite)
nikhil ne hameṃ pūrī bāt batā dī.
Nikhil told us the whole story.
Yet देना does not require a human recipient. In बत्ती बुझा दी, the resulting darkness is simply installed in the situation:
निकलते समय उसने रसोई की बत्ती बुझा दी।
nikalte samay usne rasoī kī battī bujhā dī.
When leaving, she switched off the kitchen light.
The vector can also convey decisive disposal or an action that affects someone adversely. That evaluative shade comes from context, not from देना alone.
prabandhan ne binā sūcnā ke baiṭhak radd kar dī.
Management cancelled the meeting without notice. (neutral-to-critical context)
Calling every देना compound “generous” is therefore wrong. Outward direction includes helpful provision, harmful impact, and impersonal change.
Secured completion with लेना
लेना is frequent when the agent acquires information, completes a task for later use, protects a resource, or settles something before proceeding.
Download the ticket before boarding the train. (informal; secure it for use)
maĩne kal kī baiṭhak ke lie sāre ā̃kaṛe jā̃c lie haiṃ.
I have checked all the figures for tomorrow's meeting.
bāriś śurū huī to hamne khiṛkiyā̃ band kar līṃ.
When it started raining, we closed the windows around us.
The windows are not literally taken. Their closed state is secured as protection for the people inside. लेना can therefore occur in altruistic actions too; “self-directed” describes the grammatical center of the result, not the agent's moral motive.
Genuine overlap: both are possible
Some lexical stems readily combine with either vector. Closing a door illustrates why both can be truthful:
मैंने जाते-जाते बाहर का दरवाज़ा बंद कर दिया।
maĩne jāte-jāte bāhar kā darvāzā band kar diyā.
As I left, I shut the outer door, leaving it closed.
śor baṛhā to maĩne apne kamre kā darvāzā band kar liyā.
When the noise increased, I closed my room's door to shut it out.
कर दिया highlights the imposed result in the setting; कर लिया highlights control or protection secured by the subject. Neither vector is intrinsically more complete.
With writing, audience and intended use often decide the construal:
मैंने बोर्ड पर वाई-फ़ाई का पासवर्ड लिख दिया।
maĩne borḍ par vāī-fāī kā pāsvarḍ likh diyā.
I wrote the Wi-Fi password on the board for people to see.
maĩne vāī-fāī kā pāsvarḍ apnī ḍāyarī meṃ likh liyā.
I wrote the Wi-Fi password in my diary for my own reference.
The English cue wrote down does not choose a Hindi vector. Public availability favors देना; retained information favors लेना.
Aspect, negation, and agreement
Only the vector inflects; the preceding lexical stem stays bare: लिख दिया / लिख लिया, not perfective लिखा दिया / लिखा लिया for these vector meanings. In active transitive perfectives, ने and object agreement apply to the compound as a whole.
Sameera gave both keys to the neighbor.
This sentence uses lexical देना, not vector देना, because no earlier bare verb precedes it. By contrast, चाबियाँ रख दीं contains vector देना after रख-. Structure must be established before interpretation.
Negation can retain either vector when its special result is being denied or contrasted:
मैंने आपका नंबर किसी को बता नहीं दिया; वह मेरे पास सुरक्षित है।
maĩne āpkā nambar kisī ko batā nahīṃ diyā; vah mere pās surakṣit hai.
I did not go and give your number to anyone; it is safe with me. (respectful addressee)
maĩne abhī ṭikaṭ xarīd nahīṃ liyā hai; pahle tārīx tay karnī hai.
I have not bought the ticket yet; we first need to settle the date.
Plain नहीं बताया / नहीं ख़रीदा would neutrally deny the events. Retaining the vectors specifically denies release or secured completion.
A short dialogue: one task, opposite orientations
a: patā likh liyā? ba: nahīṃ, maĩne borḍ par likh diyā, tāki sab dekh sakeṃ. a: acchā, maĩ apne fon meṃ bhī likh letā hū̃.
A: Did you note down the address for yourself? B: No, I wrote it on the board so everyone could see. A: Okay, I'll save it in my phone too. (informal; masculine A)
The first लिख लिया asks whether A secured the information. B corrects that assumption with outward लिख दिया. A then chooses लिख लेता हूँ because the personal copy will be retained for later use. Reversing the vectors would not necessarily be ungrammatical, but it would misrepresent who the action was for.
Diagnostic checklist
- Is देना/लेना a vector after a bare stem, or the literal main verb “give/take”?
- Does the result leave the agent's sphere, become available, or decisively affect the situation?
- Does the agent secure, absorb, manage, or prepare the result for later use?
- Which participant is the discourse center, regardless of who grammatically owns the object?
- Could both fit with different implications, and does the surrounding purpose phrase reveal the intended one?
- Is the stem–vector combination conventional, and is only the vector inflected?
Common Mistakes
Misleading if the intended point is that tea was prepared and made available to everyone; लेना centers the result around the agent.
maĩne sabke lie cāy banā dī.
I made tea for everyone.
maĩne apne fon meṃ nambar likh diyā.
I entered the number into my phone. (the result was put on record)
maĩne apne fon meṃ nambar likh liyā.
I saved the number in my phone for my own reference.
Both are grammatical resultatives. लिख दिया can neutrally profile entering or putting the number into the phone, while लिख लिया more explicitly presents the stored number as information secured for the agent.
Incorrect—the lexical verb before a vector must remain the bare stem
usne riporṭ paṛh lī.
She finished reading the report.
Incorrect—unmarked masculine singular सच controls the transitive perfective compound, not honorific उन्होंने.
unhoṃne hameṃ sac batā diyā.
They told us the truth. (honorific singular or plural)
Key Takeaways
Choose देना when a compatible event's result is released outward, supplied, imposed, or made available in the wider situation. Choose लेना when the result is secured, absorbed, protected, or completed around the agent. Participant orientation, aspect, case, and speaker stance all contribute; no English word selects the vector automatically. Where both occur, they describe the same event boundary from different social and discourse centers.
