तू versus तुम versus आप

Hindi does not have one socially neutral equivalent of English you. तू addresses one person at an intimate or deliberately lowered level, तुम addresses one or more people familiarly, and आप addresses one or more people respectfully. The choice simultaneously states something about the relationship and selects a grammatical agreement pattern.

The central question is not simply age, number, or formality. Speakers consider reciprocity, family and community practice, institutional roles, emotional tone, and the immediate setting. A friend who is तुम in private may be आप onstage; an affectionate तू can become insulting when used by a stranger. The core page on choosing तू, तुम, or आप gives the basic system; this guide concentrates on difficult social choices and shifts.

A compact decision tree

  1. Is the addressee an unfamiliar adult, client, teacher, senior colleague, elder, or person in a service encounter? Begin with आप.
  2. Has the relationship clearly established mutual familiarity without extreme intimacy? तुम is often appropriate.
  3. Is reciprocal तू established within this family, friendship, romantic relationship, devotional practice, or peer group? तू may be natural.
  4. Are you addressing more than one person? Use तुम for a familiar group and आप for a respectful or mixed group; standard तू is singular.
  5. Has the setting become public, professional, tense, or ceremonial? A shift upward to आप may protect respect even with someone normally addressed as तुम.
  6. Are you angry, teasing, tender, or quoting someone? Recognize deliberate shifts, but do not imitate them until you understand the relationship.
💡
For a learner, आप is the safe opening with an adult whose norm is unknown. Moving to तुम or तू is a social negotiation, not merely a grammar exercise.

The three levels and their agreement

The following forms show the same masculine habitual and imperative at three address levels:

PronounTypical social valueHabitualCommand
तूintimate singular; also deliberately contemptuousतू आता हैआ
तुमfamiliar singular or pluralतुम आते होआओ
आपrespectful singular or pluralआप आते हैंआइए

तू आज जल्दी आ रहा है?

tū āj jaldī ā rahā hai?

Are you coming early today? (intimate singular, masculine addressee)

तुम आज जल्दी आ रहे हो?

tum āj jaldī ā rahe ho?

Are you coming early today? (familiar masculine singular or mixed/male group)

आप आज जल्दी आ रहे हैं?

āp āj jaldī ā rahe haiṃ?

Are you coming early today? (respectful masculine singular or mixed/male group)

The referential event is unchanged, but the relationship is not. English you are coming supplies no clue about the necessary Hindi pronoun, auxiliary, or participle number. With a respected female singular addressee, use honorific plural agreement: आप आ रही हैं, not आप आ रही है.

आप: respect, not merely formality

आप is normal in both formal and everyday respectful interaction. It is used with strangers, customers, instructors, many elders, and anyone to whom the speaker conventionally shows distance or regard. It can also express warmth: spouses, siblings, and close friends in some families address each other as आप.

आपको खिड़की वाली सीट चाहिए?

āpko khiṛkī vālī sīṭ cāhie?

Would you like a window seat? (respectful service interaction)

दादी, आपने दवा ले ली है?

dādī, āpne davā le lī hai?

Grandma, have you taken your medicine? (affectionate and respectful)

Singular आप grammatically behaves like a plural/honorific controller: आप हैं, आप करेंगे, आप बैठिए. Gender can still appear in participles and futures: a respected woman may hear आप कब लौटेंगी?

मैडम, आप अगली बैठक में आएँगी न?

maiḍam, āp aglī baiṭhak meṃ āẽgī na?

Ma'am, you will come to the next meeting, won't you? (respectful female singular)

Do not describe आप as stiff by default. It becomes distant only relative to a relationship where a lower form is expected.

तुम: familiar and number-flexible

तुम is common among friends, peers, siblings, partners, and adults addressing children when तू is not their family norm. It can refer to one person or several. Agreement is grammatically plural/familiar: तुम हो, तुम करोगे, तुम बैठो.

तुम घर पहुँचकर मुझे संदेश भेज देना।

tum ghar pahũckar mujhe sandeś bhej denā.

Send me a message when you get home. (familiar singular or plural)

तुम दोनों पहले खाना खा लो; हम बाद में आएँगे।

tum donoṃ pahle khānā khā lo; ham bād meṃ āẽge.

You two eat first; we'll come later. (familiar plural)

With one female addressee, the referent is singular and feminine, but the auxiliary stays हो: तुम थक गई हो. With a group of women, the same surface form can occur: तुम सब थक गई हो. Context and expressions such as तुम दोनों / तुम सब clarify number.

नेहा, तुम बहुत थक गई हो; थोड़ा आराम कर लो।

nehā, tum bahut thak gaī ho; thoṛā ārām kar lo.

Neha, you're very tired; get some rest. (familiar female singular)

An unsolicited तुम to an adult customer or senior can sound patronizing. Familiarity in English conversation does not automatically license familiar Hindi address.

तू: intimacy, devotion, or deliberate lowering

तू is singular and selects singular agreement: तू है, तू करेगा/करेगी, with a bare-stem imperative such as आ, बैठ, सुन. It is natural only where the relationship supports it. Family practice varies: one speaker uses तू with siblings and childhood friends, another never uses it outside prayer or song.

तू अकेला नहीं है; मुश्किल में मैं तेरे साथ रहूँगा।

tū akelā nahīṃ hai; muśkil meṃ maĩ tere sāth rahū̃gā.

You are not alone; I will stand by you in difficult times. (deeply intimate singular; masculine addressee and speaker)

तू ही मेरा सहारा है।

tū hī merā sahārā hai.

You alone are my support. (intimate or devotional singular)

The same form can be aggressive from a stranger or superior because it denies the addressee ordinary respect:

तू मुझसे इस तरह बात मत कर।

tū mujhse is tarah bāt mat kar.

Don't you speak to me like that. (hostile or sharply intimate singular)

Tone does not create one fixed meaning. Tenderness and contempt occupy opposite ends of the same socially lowered scale. This is genuinely culture- and relationship-dependent; there is no universal age formula to memorize.

Oblique and possessive forms must match

Changing the subject pronoun also changes case-marked and possessive forms:

LevelErgativeDative/accusativePossessive base
तूतूनेतुझेतेरा
तुमतुमनेतुम्हेंतुम्हारा
आपआपनेआपकोआपका

आपने अपना परिचय दिया, लेकिन मुझे आपका नाम सुनाई नहीं दिया।

āpne apnā paricay diyā, lekin mujhe āpkā nām sunāī nahīṃ diyā.

You introduced yourself, but I did not catch your name. (respectful)

तुम्हें अपनी चाबी कहाँ मिली?

tumheṃ apnī cābī kahā̃ milī?

Where did you find your key? (familiar)

Mixing आप with तुम्हारा is not a shortcut to moderate politeness. It usually sounds inconsistent unless the speaker is deliberately switching levels mid-utterance.

Deliberate shifts and genuine overlap

Pronoun choice can change within a relationship. A normally तुम-using colleague may switch to आप in a public meeting to recognize institutional roles. A parent may shift from affectionate तू to तुम when speaking seriously. Lovers may move downward to signal closeness—or upward playfully or during conflict.

घर पर मैं तुम्हें ‘तुम’ कहता हूँ, लेकिन मंच पर आपको ‘डॉक्टर साहिबा’ कहूँगा।

ghar par maĩ tumheṃ ‘tum’ kahtā hū̃, lekin mañc par āpko ‘ḍokṭar sāhibā’ kahū̃gā.

At home I address you as tum, but onstage I will call you ‘Dr. Sahiba.’ (masculine speaker)

Such shifts are meaningful precisely because the baseline relation is known. A learner should not treat them as free synonyms.

Regional and household practices also differ. In some communities तुम is the ordinary form for parents; in others only आप feels acceptable. Some close friends maintain आप for life. These differences are real sociolinguistic systems, not careless speech.

💡
Listen for what both people use reciprocally and how others in the same setting address the person. Pronoun choice is community-specific evidence; a phrasebook's age chart is not.

A short dialogue: correcting the social level

अ: नमस्ते, तुम यहाँ पहली बार आए हो? ब: जी, लेकिन आप मुझे ‘आप’ कहें तो बेहतर होगा। अ: माफ़ कीजिए—क्या आप यहाँ पहली बार आए हैं?

a: namaste, tum yahā̃ pahlī bār āe ho? ba: jī, lekin āp mujhe ‘āp’ kaheṃ to behtar hogā. a: māf kījie—kyā āp yahā̃ pahlī bār āe haiṃ?

A: Hello, is this your first time here? B: Yes, but I would prefer you to address me as aap. A: I'm sorry—is this your first time here? (adult strangers; masculine B)

The first grammar is internally consistent, but तुम assumes familiarity that B does not accept. The repair requires more than replacing the pronoun: आए हो becomes honorific आए हैं, and the apology uses respectful कीजिए.

Diagnostic checklist

  • Is the addressee singular or plural, and is the group familiar, respectful, or mixed?
  • What level do participants in this relationship already use reciprocally?
  • Does the public or professional setting call for a respectful shift?
  • Could तू sound tender here, or would it sound contemptuous?
  • Do the auxiliary, participle, future, imperative, case forms, and possessives match the chosen level?
  • Are you copying English you without making the social decision Hindi requires?

Common Mistakes

❌ सर, तुम इस फ़ाइल पर हस्ताक्षर करोगे?

Socially inappropriate in a neutral workplace request to a senior; तुम assumes familiarity.

✅ सर, क्या आप इस फ़ाइल पर हस्ताक्षर करेंगे?

sar, kyā āp is fāil par hastākṣar kareṅge?

Sir, will you sign this file? (respectful)

❌ आप कल कहाँ था?

Incorrect—respectful आप requires plural/honorific agreement, even for one person.

✅ आप कल कहाँ थे?

āp kal kahā̃ the?

Where were you yesterday? (respectful masculine or gender-unspecified singular)

❌ मीरा, तुम तैयार है?

Incorrect—familiar तुम selects हो, not है.

✅ मीरा, तुम तैयार हो?

mīrā, tum taiyār ho?

Mira, are you ready? (familiar)

❌ मैडम, तुम्हारा बैग यहाँ है।

Inconsistent in a respectful interaction; the possessive should remain at the आप level.

✅ मैडम, आपका बैग यहाँ है।

maiḍam, āpkā baig yahā̃ hai.

Ma'am, your bag is here. (respectful)

Key Takeaways

Use आप as the respectful default when an adult relationship is unknown, तुम for established familiarity or a familiar group, and तू only for established intimate singular address, devotional usage, or deliberate lowering. Relationship, reciprocity, setting, region, and stance outrank simple age rules. Once chosen, the level governs the entire grammatical chain: case forms, possessives, auxiliaries, futures, and imperatives must all align.
