The magpa- causative actor voice: Valency, Voice, and Lexical Restrictions

Magpa- increases valency by introducing a causer above another event. That underlying event may already contain an actor, patient, product, recipient, or goal. The resulting marker frame therefore depends on more than the prefix: it depends on the direct verb family, which participants are overt, and whether the construction has developed a service or reflexive meaning.

In magpa- actor voice, the causer is pivot. This does not mean the causer directly performs the root action; it means Filipino organizes the causative clause around the participant who permits, orders, arranges, or initiates it.

Valency patterns to learn

Underlying eventTypical magpa- frameExampleInterpretive issue
transitive cookingcauser pivot + ng food + sa/kay cookmagpaluto ng isda kay Nilocausee is commissioned actor
intransitive sleepingcauser pivot + ng sleepermagpatulog ng batacausee undergoes sleep
motion to a goalcauser pivot + caused mover + sa goalmagpapunta ng kawani sa bodegamover and destination are distinct
feedingcauser pivot + ng food + sa eatermagpakain ng damo sa kambinglexicalized three-participant frame
personal servicecustomer pivot (+ sa/kay provider)magpagupit kay Fecustomer is also affected beneficiary

These are strong contemporary patterns, not a single case formula. The general valency page explains why time and manner phrases do not count as additional core participants.

Nagpaluto si Vina ng ginataang kalabasa kay Olan.

Vina had Olan cook squash in coconut milk.

Nagpatulog ang ama ng bata bago magsimula ang videoke sa kapitbahay.

The father put a child to sleep before the neighbors' karaoke began.

Nagpapunta ang tagapamahala ng kawani sa bodega para kumuha ng mga kahon.

The manager sent an employee to the storage room to get the boxes.

The first underlying event is transitive and overtly retains food and cook. The second and third arise from one-participant sleeping and motion events, so the caused sleeper or mover fills the added non-pivot slot.

💡
Start from a full direct clause, identify its participants, then add the causer. This predicts the causative frame more reliably than translating English “make” or “have.”

Causee marking depends on the base frame

With an overt theme of a transitive event, an animate causee commonly appears as a sa/kay phrase:

Nagpasulat ang abogado ng salaysay kay Mario.

The lawyer had Mario write a statement.

The causer is ang abogado, the product is ng salaysay, and the caused writer is kay Mario. With an intransitive base, a common-noun causee can instead appear in an ng phrase:

Nagpapunta ang tagapagsanay ng dalawang manlalaro sa klinika pagkatapos ng ensayo.

The coach sent two players to the clinic after practice.

There is no universal marker called “causee case.” The forms reflect how the secondary actor fits beside the underlying complements. Named participants, pronouns, and two-goal constructions may also create ambiguity, so speakers often reorder, omit recoverable material, or split the content into two clauses.

For example, a magpabigay clause with two kay phrases could leave it unclear who gives and who receives. Natural Filipino avoids confusion by naming the causee in an earlier clause or using a patient- or recipient-voice alternative whose pivot makes the intended roles clearer.

Causer pivot versus caused-theme pivot

Nagpaluto si Nena ng isda kay Pio para sa hapunan.

Nena had Pio cook fish for dinner.

Ipinaluto ni Nena kay Pio ang isdang binili sa palengke.

Nena had Pio cook the fish bought at the market.

Both clauses are completed and causative. Nagpaluto selects causer si Nena; ipinaluto selects caused theme ang isda and makes Nena ni Nena. The widely used shorter (informal) variant pinaluto can replace ipinaluto in many contemporary contexts.

Another causative patient-voice family selects the causee:

Pinatulog ni Nena ang bata bago dumating ang mga bisita.

Nena put the child to sleep before the guests arrived.

Here ang bata is the caused sleeper pivot. English gives no reliable signal that Filipino should choose nagpatulog, ipinaluto, or pinatulog; event structure and desired pivot do.

💡
Causation and voice are independent dimensions. Magpa- selects the causer; related ipa- or pa-...-in constructions can select a caused theme or causee.

Service and reflexive-like constructions

In many service expressions, the causer arranges an action that affects the causer's own body, property, or interests. The provider is readily inferred and often omitted.

Nagpagupit si Lino bago magpalitrato para sa pasaporte.

Lino got a haircut before having his passport photo taken.

Nagpapagamot si Aling Sela sa ospital ng lalawigan.

Ms. Sela is receiving treatment at the provincial hospital.

Lino does not cut hair, and Aling Sela is not necessarily directing a named medical worker. These are conventional service construals. Calling magpa- simply “make someone do” would misdescribe them.

Some change-of-state causatives can be reflexive-like or externally caused depending on context:

Nagpapataba si Rina bago ang susunod na paligsahan.

Rina is trying to gain weight before the next competition.

Without another participant, nagpapataba readily means that Rina is causing herself to become heavier. With ng mga biik, it would mean she is fattening piglets. Animacy and real-world plausibility help resolve the omitted causee.

Ambiguity inherited from root families

A root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides its derivational system. Direct lumabas means “go out,” while maglabas can mean “bring/take something out.” Both feed into magpalabas, so the causative may mean “let/cause someone to go out” or “have someone bring something out.”

Nagpalabas ang direktor ng mga tauhan matapos ang pagsasanay.

The director let the staff go out after the drill.

Nagpalabas ang direktor ng mga upuan mula sa bodega.

The director had the chairs brought out of the storage room.

The animate staff favors caused self-motion; the chairs favor caused transport. The surface verb alone does not settle the valency.

The same issue occurs with magpauwi, which can send someone home or arrange for something to be taken home. This is systematic ambiguity, not careless usage.

Negation, questions, and omission

Hindi kami nagpakarga ng mga kahon dahil magaan naman ang mga iyon.

We did not have anyone carry the boxes because they were light anyway.

The carrier is omitted because unimportant. The valency slot remains conceptually present.

—Nagpaayos ba kayo ng sasakyan kay Mang Diego? —Oo, pero preno lang ang ipinagawa namin.

—Did you have Mr. Diego repair the vehicle? —Yes, but we only had the brakes worked on.

The question selects respectful/plural kayo as causer pivot. The answer shifts to causative patient voice ipinagawa so preno can be contrastively selected.

💡
Omitted causees and providers are common when generic or recoverable. Do not conclude that the construction has lost its causative structure merely because no worker is named.

Productivity and lexical restrictions

Magpa- is productive with many verbal bases, but not every conceivable combination has a neutral predictable meaning. Magpatingin “seek examination,” magpagamot “seek treatment,” magpasalamat “give thanks,” and magpatawad “forgive/ask forgiveness” have conventional meanings that outrun a literal causative calculation.

Some bases associated only with particular actor-voice morphology resist a freely created magpa- counterpart, and borrowed bases require established usage and standard spelling. When a coined form is uncertain, use a known causative construction or an explicit clause such as hilingin na... rather than manufacture morphology.

Common Mistakes

Treating the causer as direct actor

❌ Nagpagupit si Ivo kay Ben, kaya ginupitan ni Ivo si Ben.

Wrong interpretation — Ivo is the customer/causer, not necessarily the barber.

✅ Nagpagupit si Ivo kay Ben, kaya si Ben ang gumupit sa kaniya.

Ivo got a haircut from Ben, so Ben was the one who cut his hair.

The correction identifies the actual provider explicitly.

Using one causee marker everywhere

❌ Nagpasulat ang guro ni Mila ng sanaysay.

Incorrect for the intended actor-voice causative — ni Mila does not mark the commissioned writer in this frame.

✅ Nagpasulat ang guro ng sanaysay kay Mila.

The teacher had Mila write an essay.

The transitive base retains product ng sanaysay and marks the personal causee with kay.

Giving the caused theme ang marking

❌ Nagpagawa si Tessa ang bakod sa panday.

Incorrect — magpa- actor voice already selects Tessa as causer pivot.

✅ Nagpagawa si Tessa ng bakod sa panday.

Tessa had a metalworker make a fence.

Selecting the fence as pivot would require a causative non-actor-voice form.

Assuming magpa- always means force

❌ Nagpalabas si Dina ng mga bata, kaya pinilit niya silang umalis.

Unsupported inference — nagpalabas can mean that Dina allowed the children to go out.

✅ Nagpalabas si Dina ng mga bata para makapaglaro sila.

Dina let the children go outside so they could play.

Context supplies permissive rather than coercive causation.

Key Takeaways

  • Magpa- adds a causer and selects that causer as actor pivot.
  • Causee marking depends on the underlying verb's valency and on what other participants are overt.
  • Related causative voices can select the caused theme or causee instead of the causer.
  • Service, reflexive-like, and lexicalized meanings are central contemporary uses, not exceptions to ignore.
  • Root-family ambiguity can survive causativization, so interpret the entire clause rather than the affix alone.
