The magpa- causative family introduces a causer who brings about, permits, requests, or arranges another event. In actor voice, that causer is the pivot. The person who performs the caused action—the causee—and any theme or patient follow the marker frame licensed by the underlying verb.
English may translate magpa- with “make,” “let,” “have,” “get,” or even a simple verb such as “feed.” No one translation defines the affix. Its essential structural contribution is a causative layer plus causer-pivot alignment; context determines whether the causation is direct, permissive, requested, or arranged.
The aspect family
| Root | Basic | Completed | Incompleted | Contemplated | Common use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| luto | magpaluto | nagpaluto | nagpapaluto | magpapaluto | have or ask someone to cook |
| kain | magpakain | nagpakain | nagpapakain | magpapakain | feed; cause or allow to eat |
| tulog | magpatulog | nagpatulog | nagpapatulog | magpapatulog | put someone to sleep |
| gupit | magpagupit | nagpagupit | nagpapagupit | magpapagupit | have one's hair cut |
| ayos | magpaayos | nagpaayos | nagpapaayos | magpapaayos | have something repaired or arranged |
The aspectual repetition occurs on pa, not on the root: nag-pa-pa-luto, written nagpapaluto, and mag-pa-pa-luto, written magpapaluto. Standard magpaayos and its aspect forms are written solid; the adjacent vowels do not require an accent mark.
Have Aunt Mercy cook rice porridge for the guards.
Omar is putting a baby to sleep in the other room.
The first causer is ka, and the commissioned cook is kay Tita Mercy. The second causer is si Omar, while ng sanggol identifies the caused sleeper in this intransitive-base construction.
One form, several strengths of causation
Context determines whether the causer orders, permits, persuades, arranges, or pays for the caused event.
The teacher had the students read a short story.
Celia let the children go outside so they could play in the yard.
Ruben had a carpenter in the next village make a table.
The teacher directs a task, Celia grants permission, and Ruben commissions a service. Magpa- itself does not specify coercion. Social relationship, lexical meaning, and context supply that interpretation.
Service constructions often omit the provider because the causer is also the customer or beneficiary:
Nagpagupit ako bago ang kasal ng pinsan ko.
I had my hair cut before my cousin's wedding.
This does not mean that ako cut anyone's hair. The barber is recoverable from the conventional service situation and need not be named.
Actor voice selects the causer
In a neutral magpa- clause, the causer takes an ang/si form. A caused theme commonly takes ng, and a commissioned animate causee commonly appears in a sa/kay phrase when the underlying verb also has a theme.
Belen had the cleaner clean the curtains before the fiesta.
Si Belen is the causer pivot, ng mga kurtina the things cleaned, and sa tagalinis the service provider. These are phrase-marker relations, not direct equivalents of English subject, object, and “by.”
Compare direct action and causation with the same root:
Nagluto si Belen ng sopas para sa mga bisita.
Belen cooked soup for the guests.
Belen had Nardo cook soup for the guests.
Nagluto presents Belen as the cook. Nagpaluto presents her as the causer; Nardo performs the cooking. English speakers must not infer direct performance from actor voice: the actor pivot of a causative is the causer.
The general valency guide explains how derivation can add a participant.
Roots form construction families
A root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides the derivational system. From tulog, matulog selects the sleeper, magpatulog selects the causer, and patulugin selects the caused sleeper in a causative patient-voice construction. From luto, magluto selects the cook, magpaluto the person arranging the cooking, and ipaluto the selected food to be cooked.
The family is productive but lexically restricted. Magpatingin conventionally means to seek a medical examination or consultation, and magpagamot means to seek treatment or have someone treated. Their everyday service meanings must be learned as wholes rather than calculated as literal “cause to see” and “cause to medicate.”
Dario consulted a doctor because he had been coughing for three days.
Negation, questions, and a short exchange
We did not have the roof repaired during the dry season because funds were insufficient.
Exclusive kami is the causer pivot. Completed nagpaayos remains visible inside the negative clause.
—Will you have a new shelf made? —Yes, but we'll ask the carpenter for an estimate first.
The question uses contemplated magpapagawa. The reply uses exclusive kami, excluding the person who asked.
Common Mistakes
Assuming the causer performs the root action
Wrong inference — nagpaluto says Aris arranged the cooking, not that he necessarily cooked it himself.
Aris cooked adobo, so he himself sliced the ingredients and simmered it.
Changing nagpaluto to nagluto removes the added causee event and presents Aris as direct cook.
Giving the theme pivot marking in actor voice
❌ Nagpaluto si Mina ang isda kay Joel.
Incorrect — magpa- actor voice selects Mina as pivot, so the fish cannot also take ang.
✅ Nagpaluto si Mina ng isda kay Joel.
Mina had Joel cook fish.
The cooked theme takes ng in this frame.
Marking a named causee like a non-pivot actor
❌ Nagpasulat si Cora ng liham ni Ben.
Wrong for the intended causative meaning — ni Ben reads as a possessor or non-pivot actor in another alignment.
✅ Nagpasulat si Cora ng liham kay Ben.
Cora had Ben write a letter.
With an overt text, personal causee Ben is expressed by kay in this actor-voice causative frame.
Adding an English tense ending
❌ Nagpagawa-ed sila ng tolda para sa paligsahan.
Incorrect — completed nagpagawa never takes English -ed.
✅ Nagpagawa sila ng tolda para sa paligsahan.
They had a tent made for the competition.
Filipino aspect morphology already presents the arranging event as completed.
