The magpa- causative actor voice: Incompleted-Aspect Formation

Incompleted magpa- causatives replace mag- with nag- and repeat the causative syllable pa: magpaluto → nagpapaluto, magpakain → nagpapakain, and magpaayos → nagpapaayos. They present causing, permitting, or arranging as ongoing or recurring while keeping the causer as actor pivot.

The caused event may itself unfold over time, but the form grammatically views the whole causative situation from within. English translations vary among “is having,” “was making,” “regularly gets,” and simple lexical verbs such as “feeds.”

Repeat pa, not the root

Do not reduplicate the first root syllable as though magpa- were simple mag-. The causative complex determines the position of aspectual reduplication. The reduplication guide provides the wider system.

Nagpapagawa si Lita ng mahabang bangko sa karpintero.

Lita is having a carpenter make a long bench.

Nagpapaayos ang samahan ng lumang silid-pulong ngayong linggo.

The association is having the old meeting room renovated this week.

The causers are pivots. The bench and room take ng as themes of the caused work; sa karpintero identifies the service provider.

💡
Segment nagpapagawa as nag-pa-pa-gawa, not nagpa-ga-gawa. The repeated pa is the reliable signal of incompleted magpa- causation.

Present, past-background, and habitual readings

Ongoing now

Nagpapakain si Joel ng lugaw sa matandang aso ngayon.

Joel is feeding rice porridge to the old dog now.

The lexicalized English translation “is feeding” is natural, but the Filipino structure still contains a causer/feeder pivot, food, and caused eater.

Backgrounded in the past

Nagpapalinis kami ng tangke nang biglang mawalan ng tubig.

We were having the tank cleaned when the water supply suddenly stopped.

Incompleted nagpapalinis supplies the background; completed mawalan marks the interrupting change. Nang introduces that event and must not be confused with marker ng.

Habitual service or routine

Nagpapagupit si Nilo kay Mang Pilo tuwing ikalawang Sabado.

Nilo gets his hair cut by Mr. Pilo every second Saturday.

Nagpapatingin si Corazon sa doktor tuwing bumabalik ang pananakit ng tuhod niya.

Corazon consults a doctor whenever her knee pain returns.

Neither sentence necessarily describes activity underway at speech time. Repeated scheduling produces an English simple-present translation.

💡
Incompleted aspect is not present tense. Time expressions decide whether nagpapagawa means “is having made,” “was having made,” or “regularly has made.”

Controlled aspect comparison

Nagpatahi si Mira ng kurtina noong nakaraang buwan.

Mira had curtains sewn last month.

Nagpapatahi si Mira ng kurtina para sa bagong bahay.

Mira is having curtains sewn for the new house.

Completed nagpatahi presents the commission as bounded. Incompleted nagpapatahi opens an internal view. Both select si Mira as causer/customer pivot and ng kurtina as the product of the caused sewing.

The provider may be omitted when it is unknown or unimportant. This is common in service constructions and does not mean Mira herself is sewing.

Negation, questions, and causee interpretation

Hindi ako nagpapahatid sa opisina kapag maayos ang panahon.

I do not have anyone drive me to the office when the weather is good.

The first-person causer/service recipient is pivot ako. The driver is omitted and contextually generic.

—Nagpapabasa pa ba ang guro ng nobela sa mga mag-aaral? —Oo, isang kabanata bawat linggo.

—Does the teacher still have the students read a novel? —Yes, one chapter each week.

Pa ba asks whether the habitual assignment continues. Ng nobela is the reading theme, and sa mga mag-aaral explicitly marks the caused readers.

Causee marking depends on the underlying frame. With an overt transitive theme, a causee often takes sa/kay, as in nagpapaluto ng sopas kay Ben. With an intransitive base, a common-noun caused participant may take ng, as in nagpapatulog ng bata. Do not reduce both patterns to English “by.”

Lexical restrictions

A root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides the derivational system. Gawa gives direct gumagawa, causative actor-voice nagpapagawa, and causative theme-pivot ipinapagawa/pinapagawa. The first presents the maker as pivot, the second the person commissioning, and the third the selected work or item.

Some incompleted forms are structurally regular but conventionally specialized. Nagpapagamot commonly means seeking or undergoing treatment, while nagpapakita can mean causing someone to see, showing something, or presenting oneself, depending on its construction. Learn the full clause.

Nagpapagamot si Mang Tonyo sa sentrong pangkalusugan ng barangay.

Mr. Tonyo is receiving treatment at the barangay health center.

Accepted variation also occurs in related causative patient-voice forms, where initial i- may be retained or omitted, but actor-voice nagpapa- itself remains stable in the neutral pattern taught here.

💡
Regular surface morphology does not guarantee a transparent English meaning. Store service verbs such as nagpapatingin and nagpapagamot with their established contexts.

Common Mistakes

Repeating pa twice beyond the required pattern

❌ Nagpapapaluto si Dina ng meryenda kay Olan.

Incorrect — the incompleted form contains two pa syllables in total, not three.

✅ Nagpapaluto si Dina ng meryenda kay Olan.

Dina is having Olan prepare a snack.

The correct segmentation is nag-pa-pa-luto.

Reduplicating the root instead

❌ Nagpagagawa si Dino ng aparador sa karpintero.

Wrong for the intended ongoing causative — magpa- reduplicates pa, not ga from gawa.

✅ Nagpapagawa si Dino ng aparador sa karpintero.

Dino is having a carpenter make a wardrobe.

Nagpagawa without reduplication would instead be completed.

Adding English -ing

❌ Nagpapalinis-ing sila ng bulwagan ngayon.

Incorrect — English -ing cannot attach to Filipino aspect morphology.

✅ Nagpapalinis sila ng bulwagan ngayon.

They are having the hall cleaned now.

The repeated pa already marks incompleted aspect.

Giving the theme ang marking

❌ Nagpapagawa si Rina ang mesa sa panday.

Incorrect actor-voice alignment — Rina is already the causer pivot.

✅ Nagpapagawa si Rina ng mesa sa panday.

Rina is having a metalworker make a table.

The created theme is non-pivot ng mesa.

Key Takeaways

  • Form the incompleted causative with nagpapa- + root.
  • Reduplicate pa, not initial root material.
  • The form covers ongoing, past-background, habitual, and repeated causation or service arrangements.
  • The causer remains pivot; causee marking depends on the underlying event's valency.
  • Service meanings and ambiguous roots require full-clause learning despite regular morphology.
