Contemplated magpa- causatives retain mag- and repeat pa: magpaluto β magpapaluto, magpakain β magpapakain, and magpaayos β magpapaayos. The causer remains actor pivot, while the causative event is presented as not yet begun from the relevant viewpoint. The basic-versus-contemplated guide explains the same clause-type contrast across other families.
This form is common for future arrangements, promises, and intentions, but it is not an English future tense. An unbegun causative may be conditional, uncertain, or viewed from a past point.
Forming magpapa-
| Root | Basic | Contemplated | Structure | Typical reading |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| luto | magpaluto | magpapaluto | mag + pa + pa + luto | will have someone cook / will have something cooked |
| kain | magpakain | magpapakain | mag + pa + pa + kain | will feed |
| gawa | magpagawa | magpapagawa | mag + pa + pa + gawa | will commission |
| gupit | magpagupit | magpapagupit | mag + pa + pa + gupit | will get a haircut |
| ayos | magpaayos | magpapaayos | solid vowel sequence | will have something repaired |
The repeated syllable belongs to the causative complex, not to the root. Standard spelling joins the parts: magpapagawa, not magpa-pagawa, and magpapaayos, not magpa-aayos.
Tina will have a cabinet made next month.
The barangay will serve breakfast to the volunteers tomorrow.
Unbegun causation, not guaranteed future
If the rain does not stop, we will arrange for a ride to the station.
The arrangement depends on a condition. Exclusive kami identifies the causer/service recipients and excludes the addressee.
A past expectation can also contain a contemplated form:
Akala ko ay magpapalinis sila ng tangke kinabukasan, pero ipinagpaliban nila iyon.
I thought they were going to have the tank cleaned the next day, but they postponed it.
The cleaning never needs to occur for magpapalinis to be appropriate; it was unbegun within the earlier plan.
We will have the roof repaired when we have saved enough money.
Contemplated aspect presents the arrangement as unbegun. The kapag clause provides its enabling condition.
Basic versus contemplated causative
Basic magpa- occurs in commands and many complements. Contemplated magpapa- predicates an unbegun causative event.
Have Lira cook soup before the guests arrive.
You'll have Lira cook soup for the gathering, won't you?
The first is a directive with basic magpaluto. The second confirms a projected arrangement with contemplated magpapaluto. Both select the addressee as causer pivot.
After a desiderative predicate, the basic form is natural:
Gusto ni Raul na magpagawa ng mas matibay na mesa sa panday.
Raul wants to have a metalworker make a sturdier table.
Magpagawa is a complement of gusto, not a finite future form. The provider is sa panday, and the intended product is ng mas matibay na mesa.
Negation, prohibition, and questions
Hindi ako magpapagupit bago ang pagtatanghal.
I will not get my hair cut before the performance.
Hindi denies a contemplated service event. Pivot pronoun ako follows the negator.
A prohibition uses huwag plus the basic form:
Huwag kang magpakain ng tsokolate sa aso.
Do not feed chocolate to the dog.
The basic verb is appropriate because this is a negative command, not a prediction.
βWill you have food delivered to those affected? βYes, we will arrange delivery tomorrow morning.
In this context magpapadala can describe arranging a delivery rather than causing a named person to carry it. The causee is recoverable and omitted.
Root families, ambiguity, and voice
A root is a family of constructions, and one citation form hides the derivational system. Labas has direct-motion lalabas, caused-motion magpapalabas, and transitive maglalabas βwill bring/take out.β Because causative magpa- can sit over different direct constructions, magpapalabas may mean βwill let someone go outβ or βwill have something brought out.β Context resolves it.
The teacher will let the children go outside when the program is over.
The human caused participants and time condition favor the βlet go outβ reading.
Voice remains independent. Magpapaluto si Nena ng isda kay Pio selects Nena as causer pivot; causative patient voice ipapaluto ni Nena kay Pio ang isda selects the fish. Both are contemplated and causative.
Service vocabulary can be lexicalized. Magpapatingin normally means βwill consult/get examined,β not a literal future of English βmake see.β The full participant frame must be learned.
Common Mistakes
Using the basic form as a neutral prediction
β Magpaayos si Nena ng radyo bukas.
Wrong for the intended neutral statement β magpaayos is basic and can sound directive-like.
β Magpapaayos si Nena ng radyo bukas.
Nena will have the radio repaired tomorrow.
The repeated pa marks contemplated aspect.
Adding too many pa syllables
β Magpapapaluto kami ng pansit sa Linggo.
Incorrect β contemplated magpa- contains two pa syllables, not three.
β Magpapaluto kami ng pansit sa Linggo.
We will have noodles cooked on Sunday.
The correct segmentation is mag-pa-pa-luto.
Reduplicating the root
Wrong for the intended contemplated causative β reduplication targets pa.
They will have a boat made next year.
Magpagawa without aspectual reduplication is the basic form.
Copying English negation into a prohibition
Incorrect β hindi does not form a prohibition, and kang is misplaced after it.
Do not have a door made without measurements.
The clause type selects huwag. A predictive statement would instead be Hindi ka magpapagawa ng pinto βYou will not have a door made.β
