The causer and causee are different semantic roles. The causer orders, permits, requests, enables, or arranges an event; the causee performs or undergoes the embedded action. Filipino can select either one as pivot, and some constructions instead select the caused theme or endpoint. English frequently leaves this choice hidden inside make, let, have, or get.
The difficult part is not merely memorizing markers. You must decide whose participation the clause is grammatically organized around and then use a lexical verb family that actually licenses that role. The broader causative voice comparison shows how the same logic extends to affected endpoints.
Role and Marker Map
| Participant selected | Typical construction | Causer | Causee | Other participant |
|---|---|---|---|---|
This map is a starting point, not a universal case formula. The underlying root, whether it is transitive, and conventional usage determine which participants can be expressed and how.
Causer Pivot: Who Arranged It?
Corazon had Emil write a short speech for the program. (causer pivot)
Si Corazon initiates the event; kay Emil performs the writing; ng maikling talumpati is the product. Actor voice selects Corazon, but it does not identify her as the writer.
The veterinarian made the dog run in the yard to examine its limp.
With an intransitive running event, ng aso is the caused runner. There is no separate caused theme. This is why the marker frame cannot be predicted from magpa- alone.
Causee Pivot: Who Was Made or Allowed to Act?
Corazon had Emil write a short speech for the program. (causee pivot)
The event closely matches the preceding actor-voice sentence, but now si Emil is pivot and Corazon takes ni. This version fits a context contrasting Emil with another possible writer or continuing a discussion about what Emil was assigned.
The head nurse sent the two interns home because the weather was bad.
The interns are the caused movers and the pivot. English sent hides the compositional link to βcaused to go home,β while Filipino makes the participant structure visible.
Not every pina- form transparently selects a causee, and not every root admits the same pattern. Frequent forms must be learned with their marker frames. The causative system is productive, but lexicalized families resist mechanical generation.
Theme Pivot: What Was Assigned or Arranged?
Corazon had Emil write the opening speech. (caused-theme pivot)
Now ang talumpating pambungad is the pivot. The personal causee remains kay Emil, even though he is highly identifiable. Marker choice expresses role and alignment, not a scale of human importance.
The three clauses form a controlled set:
Nagpasulat si Corazon ng talumpati kay Emil bago magtanghali.
Corazon had Emil write a speech before noon. (causer selected)
Corazon had Emil write a speech before noon. (causee selected)
Corazon had Emil write the speech before noon. (theme selected)
These are not stylistic active/passive variants. Each uses different verbal morphology, selects a different pivot, and prepares a different reference chain.
Control, Consent, and Responsibility
Causative voice does not by itself say whether the causee obeyed willingly, was coerced, received permission, or was hired. Compare explicit predicates around the causative:
Pinakiusapan ni Ada si Ruel, at pumayag siyang ipatahi kay Mila ang mga uniporme.
Ada asked Ruel, and he agreed to have Mila sew the uniforms.
Pinakiusapan and pumayag supply the social interpretation. The causative ipatahi only organizes the arranged sewing around the uniforms. Similarly, pinilit would assert coercion, while hinayaan would assert permission.
Causee animacy is typical because intentional actions require an actor, but institutions and devices can be construed as intermediaries. Animacy is a semantic expectation, not a pivot rule. A human causee stays sa/kay-marked when a theme is selected; an inanimate caused patient can be pivot if the construction licenses it.
Omission and Recoverability
Service constructions often omit the causee because the provider is generic or irrelevant:
Ipinaayos namin ang lumang kamera bago ang paglalakbay.
We had the old camera repaired before the trip.
Exclusive namin is the causer, and the camera is pivot. The repairer is understood without being named. This does not turn ipinaayos into noncausative inayos; the sentence still says that the speakers arranged the repair rather than necessarily doing it themselves.
βWho did you have get the medicine? βLando, because he was already near the pharmacy.
The sino question seeks the causee pivot. If the medicine were being identified instead, a natural question would use the theme-selecting frame: Aling gamot ang ipinakuha mo kay Lando?
Information Structure and Genuine Limits
A causer pivot is useful when the conversation asks who authorized or arranged something. A causee pivot is useful when identifying the induced actor or following what happened to that person. A theme pivot is useful when tracking a known assignment or object. These are tendencies; questions and relative clauses impose stronger pivot requirements, while lexical gaps may force a paraphrase.
Some speakers use reduced pina- forms (informal) for theme-selecting ipina- forms. In isolation, pinagawa can therefore be ambiguous between a reduced theme-oriented form and a causee-oriented analysis. Preserve ipinagawa in careful writing when that distinction matters, or express the roles overtly.
Common Mistakes
Confusing the causer with the embedded actor
Wrong inference β nagpasulat presents Corazon as causer, not necessarily as writer.
Corazon wrote a speech, so she chose every word.
Marking a causee pivot as an oblique
Incorrect for the intended causee-pivot construction β the selected writer requires si.
Corazon had Emil write a speech for the program.
Giving a theme-pivot construction two ang-series phrases
Incorrect β ipinabasa selects the passage, while the named causee takes kay.
Corazon had Emil read the final paragraph.
Treating non-actor voice as an English passive with by
Incorrect English-passive calque β the causer is a core ni phrase, not an optional intermediary phrase.
Corazon had Emil write the speech before rehearsal.
Key Takeaways
- The causer initiates the larger event; the causee performs or undergoes the embedded event.
- Causer, causee, and theme can be selected by different established voice families.
- Identifiability and animacy do not assign markers independently of voice.
- Causative morphology does not encode coercion, permission, or payment by itself.
- Omitted service providers remain semantically understood, and reduced pina- forms may be ambiguous (informal).
